EARLY ACCESS: The Secrets of NIMH
Added 2022-04-07 15:45:15 +0000 UTC
okay.. this first preview frame has me actually cackling.
Apologies for the late upload, decided to go on a couple of birthday hikes to see some waterfalls since it rained here yesterday. :)
I'll finish the details for this in a few.
This is like a synopsis of my entire childhood right here. :-D I also remember loving the short animated film Rikki Tikki Tavi, though I think it's pretty difficult to get ahold of nowadays. I also remember watching a lot of Fairy Tale Theater, many starring Shelley Duval, was kind of obsessed with them.

"Snoopy Come Home" would absolutely destroy her. Might as well have her watch "Old Yeller."

I don't know if you caught it, but Mrs. Farmer was complaining about her "lazy kitty" and how she never saw a cat that slept so much. It's because the rats kept drugging him whenever they needed to do things. Poor Dragon.

I’m so glad you enjoyed this movie. Like other tough Gen Xers, I grew up with this movie and absolutely loved it. I was really into those dark fantasy movies as a kid. They never scared me. I thought they were eerie and creepy, but that’s what I loved about them. I love animated films too, even now in my 40s. :)
Some other 70s and 80s animated films that I loved as a kid: Charlotte's Web, The Hobbit, The Water Babies, Dot and the Kangaroo, Jack and the Beanstalk, The Fantastic Adventures of Unico, Heidi’s Song, Katy Caterpillar, Land Before Time, All Dogs Go to Heaven, Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer, a few Care Bears movies, DuckTales the Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp, The Chipmunk Adventure, Here Come the Littles, The Last Unicorn, and The Adventures of Mark Twain (claymation). American Tail and Fievel Goes West were okay, but I wasn’t a huge fan of those movies. Also, it’s not a movie, but I also grew up watching Puff the Magic Dragon, which is a fun animated series.
I agree with others that you should check out The Dark Crystal. I’d also recommend The Return to Oz. Both were super dark and creepy as a kid, but I loved them. And Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Cool World if you like half live-action/half animated movies. A couple of other weird, creepy kids’ movies from the 80s that I enjoyed were The Peanut Butter Solution and Child of Glass. Wow, this is like taking a walk down memory lane. :)

Most fairy tales of "old" were quite horrific, even Hans Christian Andersen stories...The Little Mermaid-she killed herself at the end because the prince did not love her, The Little Matchgirl-she starved and froze to death, The Red Shoes-a young girl is cursed to dance forever in red shoes and has a man cut off her feet to be rid of them and the feet and shoes danced away afterward. I understand that most fairy tales were stories of morals, like don't be vain etc. but my goodness! The stories of the 80s pale in comparison. :)

Gawd I wish Ghibli wasn't so prickly with their copywrites.

Watership Down. When I worked at a video store a mom brought that movie back and demanded to know why it was in the children’s section and not in the horror section lol. We 80’s kids are a tough group.

Yes, cartoons were somewhat violent back in the last Century... Bu if You ever read "Grrimm's Fairy Tales" You'd find Children's Stories have have Traditionally had a Dark Side to them...

Love that movie, though I do think the appeal of it is a very limited audience.

Also the 1973 French film "La Planete Sauvage"(known as "Fantastic Planet" here) is an oddly interesting(and a little bit weird)watch

I have a confession. I've never seen the Thomas Crown Affair 🤭 But your passion for it makes me want to, so I'll wait for Ashleigh and watch it along with her. 😃

Also showing my age here but some of my animated favorites are "Yellow Submarine"(featuring lots of Beatles music and trippy visuals) and the 2 original "Peanuts" feature films "A Boy Named Charlie Brown" and "Snoopy Come Home" :)
