Smith's very existence implies God has a sense of humor.

Was thinking the same so I'll back you up on that! It's really one of the classics from the 80s I think.

Agree with DOGMA. It's a very funny movie if you assume God has a sense of humor. Ignore those who think you need to see CLERKS or other of Kevin Smith's work first. DOGMA stands alone just fine.

But knew a lot of the cast from other movies

When you get back to Richard Dreyfuss check out The Goodbye Girl, Mr Holland's Opus, and American Graffiti. Harrison Ford was also in American Graffiti. Both were very young.

I never saw the Outsiders, interesting that you didn't dig it.

Great suggestion. Any movie with Cagney and Bogart is great.

Gosh darn it, I was hoping after this, more of y’all (besides me saying it in every comment) would be recommending The Karate Kid. C’mon. Help me out, fellow Ash-lites! Karate Kid. PUH-LEEEEEEEZE. It’s my favourite movie of all time.

Fun fact: And WHY did Francis Ford Coppola of Godfather fame direct this? Apparently, a sixth-grade school class liked 1979’s The Black Stallion so much, they did a class project picking which of their summer reading-list books they’d write to him asking to direct next. (Sound familiar, people? 😝 ). Coppola liked the creative challenge, and did such a good job adapting SE Hinton into two back-to-back films (with 1983’s not-so-classic Rumble Fish), he didn’t have the heart to tell the kids he hadn’t directed Black Stallion, Carroll Ballard had.

Very nice review, i had totally forgotten about this movie. I need to read the book again. Please check out Dogma, a very Good satire/comedy.

The buck-toothed brat asking for money is Sofia Coppola, director Francis Ford Coppola's daughter. In addition to a prominent role in Godfather 3, she has gone on to be an Oscar nominated director of The Virgin Suicides, Lost in Translation (with Bill Murrey) and Marie Antoinette. She won a best screenplay Oscar for Virgin Suicides.

He's aged really well if that's the case. Him and Johnny's actor both look good in Kobra Kai.

It was written by a sixteen-year-old girl, so not surprising. I loved it as a kid and even as an adult. To each his / her own. :-) That said, I much preferred the book. The movie was meh.

Very talented cast, but I found it to be a just O.K. movie, not one of Coppola's best. BTW, the movie was made in the 80's but the story takes place in the early 60's. Also, I think you need to react to "Angels With Dirty Faces", a classic movie starring James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, Pat O'brien and the Dead end Kids. Warning: you will probably cry at the end.

This movie is just an okay for me as well. We read the book and saw the movie in high school but I really have never had any desire to revisit it.
As for "Gone with the Wind", I don't see you really liking it. It's long, like four hours, and really could have been half the length for the same story. I do think you should check out the Carol Burnett skit "Went with the Wind" - it is absolutely hilarious and Burnett is perfect as Scarlett with Harvey Korman doing an excellent Clark Gable and Vicki Lawrence hilariously cast as the servant.

You saw Matt Dillon (Dallas) in "Something About Mary". Emilio Estevez (Mickey Mouse shirt guy) was in "The Breakfast Club" and the coach in "The Mighty Ducks" movies, and Rob Lowe (Sodapop) you might know from "Parks & Rec".

I hadn't seen this one in a while and I had forgotten it was directed by Francis Ford Coppola("The Godfather") I thought it was OK nothing spectacular I get it confused with 1979's "The Wanderers" sometimes...also for future reference this was your 1st exposure to Rob Lowe(Sodapop), C. Thomas Howell(Ponyboy), Ralph Macchio(Johnny) and Diane Lane(Cherry) who all went on to long film careers...an enjoyable reaction have a wonderful rest of Sunday!

West Side Story would be hard to edit because all of the music in the movie. I do agree it is a great film.

I've never seen this movie but enjoyed your reaction. I do think you'd enjoy West Side Story, if you'd be interested in reviewing a musical. It's a Romeo and Juliet story that's set in the 50s, similar type of subject matter but I think it has much better characters and storyline.

I still like Taps, but that might just be one of those movies that I'm unable to view objectively now. I was 10 when it came out, so old enough to get the seriousness and themes of the movie, but not old enough to really critique the movie as a movie.

This was based on the book by S E Hinton and set in the 60s. S E Hinton was actually Susan Hinton and she was 16 when she wrote it. I grew up and lived not far from the house that was used for filming. Me and my friends would go down and watch them film the movie. My mother was a nurse at the hospital and worked on the floor that they filmed scenes on. There was 3 books by S E Hinton made into movies, The Outsiders, Tex, and Rumble Fish. All filmed in and around Tulsa. The Outsiders and Rumble Fish were directed by Francis Ford Coppola.

Apart from Patrick Swayze, most of the greaser actors were late teens, early twenties.
That guy in the Mickey Mouse cutoff shirt is 21-year-old Emilio Estevez, the older brother of Charlie Sheen.

I enjoyed this movie when it first came out. Everyone in it went on to be a big star. Tom Cruise was an unknown when this movie was made. He hit it big after this with All The Right Moves, Risky Business and Top Gun. Two Patrick Swayze movies you should consider is Point Break and To Wong Foo. He really plays quite different roles in each movie which really shows his range as an actor.

This was set back in 50s-60s, but in the 80s we were pretty fighty...not like today when a teenager getting fights gets a record. As far as tobacco in Oklahoma where this was set, a lot of dudes started with snuff or smoking around 10-13. No age restrictions then, there was even a line of snuff called Happy Days to help get kids hooked, flavors and super low nicotine, if people's first experience was Copenhagen nobody would ever try again.
