WATCH ALONG: The Producers

Comments

Parker and Stone could pull it off I'm sure.

Kenton Kruger

Keaton was an absolute genius...some of the things he put on film are literally breathtaking...and even as an old man I thought he was funnier than most of his contemporaries

Paul Johnson

"A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" is a very good Movie, "something frentic." I saw the original Broadway production in 1964. Zero Mostel had exited the original cast by then, but Dick Shawn was a good substitute. (Shawn was the stoned actor, L.S.D., in The Producers.) The film even has a cameo by the late, great Buster Keaton. BTW, you ever watch a silent movie it has to be Keaton's "The General." You would not believe the action sequences. Also worth watching if you want to see how well Oregon substitutes for the Chattanooga area.

Joseph Stevenson

Everybody aught to have a maid.

Only Mel Brooks could do a musical comedy on Hitler.

Richard Meyer

I am sorry to disagree with you, but that is not Mel Brooks as the 2nd Hitler. Mel Brooks' voice is dubbed in for a singer in "Springtime for Hitler". Mel only sings: "Don't be stupid, be a smarty, come and join the Nazi Party" for dancer Tucker Smith.

SplinterTME

I suggest you watch "A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum". Zero Mostrel is also int hat one.

Mel Brooks is indeed in this film. During the Hitler auditions, there is a man who auditions 2nd. He is Mel Brooks. I took this from IMBD, listed under Mel Brooks, Filmography, The Producers, 1967 The Producers Singer in 'Springtime for Hitler' (voice, uncredited)

Oouga

She's been sent that one!

Hey, Ash, if you wanna watch a really fun one for Gene, see if you can find The World's Greatest Lover. It's not directed by Mel Brooks, but was actually written, produced and directed by Gene Wilder - just trust me, you'll love it ! ;)

Rue

Just finished the watchalong. Ashleigh, you made me lose with "Old lady land. Imagine how dry a place that is."

I'm typing this as I watch along, but the director of the play, Roger de Bris, was played by Christopher Hewitt, who you might remember as Mr. Belvedere. And the writer, Liebkind, was Kenneth Mars, who played the one-armed village constable in Young Frankenstein (and a ton of voice work for cartoons later in life).

Kevin Mowery

Oh, and if you're still curious about that soup can, google Andy Warhol and/or Pop Art.

Kathy Ice

Mel's face may not be in this movie, but his voice is. The line "don't be stupid, be a smartie, come and join the Nazi party" is Mel's recorded voice. The actor is lip synching there.

Kathy Ice

Just to address your frustration with not seeing Mel in this movie. This was Mel Brooks directorial debut. It was also the second actual film, he had done some made for tv movies, Gene Wilder was in and his first Staring/co-staring role. In fact the producer Joseph Levine wanted to fire Wilder and Brooks convinced him not to.

SplinterTME

I wasn't going to do the watch along, but after watching the edited reaction, I might have to carve out some time to watch the full length video. It's been a while since I've seen this movie and I think I want to see Ashleigh's reactions that didn't make the edit.

Lynnetta

One of my favorite movies. Have it on my DVR. Will do the watchalong later.
