EARLY ACCESS: The Jerk

Comments

Because, as she always says, she was "sheltered" from movie as a kid.

Joseph Stevenson

Smokey & The Bandit, please! Thank you!

Excellent! I forgot about that one!

And how could Beans’ “mom” have never heard the 70’s Steve standup routine of: “I’ve got to get a pair of cat handcuffs: I discovered my cat was cashing my checks at the bank disguised as me. I didn’t find out, until I looked in his bed and found $3,000 worth of CAT TOYS!…And I can’t return them because they’ve got spit all over them!”?

Eric Janssen

That might have been her reaction to the scene in the middle where a bunch of white people use the n-word. I've seen the movie before and that's pretty close to my reaction when it came up.

Kevin Mowery

Why is Ashleigh doing a Horror-Movie pose for a Steve Martin comedy?

Eric Janssen

I rewatch it in my heart everynight.

AM

I'm dying for her to watch The Three Amigos XD

AM

He had a weird sense of humor when it comes to black & white people. What was that other one with Queen Latifa??? “Bringing Down the House.” My dad rented “Leap of Faith” once thinking it would be funny. He never rented movies, BTW. It was so bad it made him angry 😡

Fatty Boombatty

And don't feel you have to go on a "completion" kick after Batman '89: Batman Returns is a movie you either love or LOATHE, depending on one's Danny DeVito fandom vs. one's tolerance for Tim Burton, and after that...we're into the Joel Schumacher years. And thereby hang a long, long story. ;)

Eric Janssen

Glad to see that she shared my general copinion on The Jerk. Not bad, and it has it's moments, but just not a style of comedy that is rewatchable for a modern audience.

Andy H.

I agree with this.

Jill Peterson

Steve Martin's 70's comedy moved on from The Jerk, and...so did his fans. The modern 80's Steve was more represented by The Man With Two Brains, and Bowfinger and Roxanne represented screenwriter Steve at his best.

Eric Janssen

I only watched The Jerk once too. Bowfinger has a lot better replay value.

Fatty Boombatty

Stripes next! After Predator... don’t forget Bowfinger. I’m tellin ya! 😎 maybe get back on the MCU party train

Fatty Boombatty

Yes, you ARE.

Eric Janssen

The carnival owner was played by Dick O'Neill who plays a subway train dispatcher in "The Taking of Pelham One Two Three"

Paul Johnson

It’s really nice✨✨✨💛💚🤍

JoStal Dance

I think Ash would like The Three Amigos, The Naked Gun, Top Secret, and Death Becomes Her.

Matt G

Which, let me guess, you liked because it was the first musical you ever saw by yourself, just for the Bill Murray/Steve Martin bits, and didn't grow up wondering "why they're singing in public, that's weird" until Moulin Rouge came along? That would explain why it seems to be the ONLY musical fans demand that reactors watch.

Eric Janssen

Roxanne is the Best! then Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and LA Story.

Wesley Eskildsen

the man with two brains, dead men dont wear plaid..

Eric Greenwood

I think the best Steve Martin movie is Roxanne.

Thane Greyhaven

Watched it. Now I can't see it. Looks like she marked it private for now?

Graham Martin

"L.A. Story" is a great Steve Martin movie that is more grounded in reality, but still surreal.... you'd love it!

Sinjoro Griego

.....also when you finish watching Batman with Michael keaton... You might want to watch his other film he did years ago with Terry Garr called "Mister Mom" .....very funny flick!!!!!

WEEZER MANN

Steve Martin did a movie called the "The Man with two brains" that was funny!!!

WEEZER MANN

Ashleigh... Here's a triple threat request because its got Old Bill Murray, and Steve Martin and And our old bud Rick Moranis in it!!! "IT'S LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS" (1986)... ITS SOOOOO FUNNY....IT'LL BE YOUR FIRST MUSICAL, AND THATS SPECIAL!!!! GUARANTEED YOU'LL FALL IN LOVE WITH THIS FLICK...."LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS"(1986)!!! ❤👍!!!!!!

WEEZER MANN

Looking forward to your Batman review!

Second third and fourth this!

Brent Fugett

Iron Man 2 would be next in the MCU lineup. FYI...

Bobby Bates

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels for sure!

Keri Parmeter

I was born the year this movie came out but I still use the quotes "he hates these cans" and "I need that!" to this day.

Thomas Ivie

Should be an interesting reaction...another great Jack Nicholson role

Paul Johnson

I think you'll love Steve Martin in Father of the Bride, and Three Amigos. The Jerk was probably his first movie aside from being on SNL.

Patrick Anderson

You should check out Dirty Rotten Soundrels with Steve Martin and Michael Cane.

David Rincon

I was in high school when this came out and there was a dog at the school, always inside no matter what the principle tried; kids named him Shithead.

Jack Jones

Batman is not part of the MCU or Marvel Cinematic Universe , he is from DC.

Jack Jones

Yes, along with "10".

Bill Bevins

In case you didn't re-watch, you might want to drop in an annotation or something that Predator is next, since this was obviously recorded before the Moonstruck switch-up and promises Batman at the end. I think this is a great movie but I understand your reservations. For me it gets the edge because of the chemistry between Steve and Bernadette Peters. I love the "Tonight You Belong to Me" scene, as it is both funny and romantic, and musical to boot. They teamed up again in another movie, Pennies From Heaven, but it's very strange -- a musical where neither sing, just lip-sync to classic songs by famous artists, and a very depressing story.

Tyler Foster

Earlier I n his career Steve had a sort of crazy character he played. He slowly phased into more traditional comedy Parenthood, Toxanne and Father of the Bride. I’m partial to Simple Twist of fate which is very sweet.

Robert Gruhn

Arthur with Dudley Moore NEEDS to be reviewed! I promise, you would love it

Candace Anderson

Did y’all hear that phone ring?! Cause I called it. Someone in the top tier patrons would request her to watch something DC related and low and behold, we’re getting Batman (1989). Yeah, it’s not current DC stuff, but it’s only the beginning my friends. Lol! Anyways, glad you enjoyed The Jerk, Ash. I’m also glad the hype for this is over cause clearly she liked it solely for Steve Martin and not for it being a “Good” movie. It does have its moments though. Onward to the livestream on the channel today! 🎊

Gio Vidrio

Yeah, comedy tends to be generational like music. You kind of had to be there. When I was a kid Monty Python was quoted like the Bible of comedy. But who knows? Bill Murray and Mel Brooks seem to hold up for her.

Ian Jones

Great reaction...I can remember seeing this in the theater back in the day and LMAO...this was Steve's 1st movie after he released two massively successful comedy albums "Let's Get Small" and "Wild and Crazy Guy" and took TV by storm in the late 70's...Looking forward to "Predator" and "Batman"...have a blessed rest of Sunday Ashleigh! :)

Paul Johnson

If you like the less zany, character driven, later period of Steve Martin I would recommend “Roxanne”, “Parenthood” and “Dirty, Rotten Scoundrels”. But I prefer Martin at his wild and craziest in “The Man With Two Brains”

Ian Jones

Other Steve Martin movies funnier than this one include All of Me, Roxanne, Cheaper by the Dozen, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, The Lonely Guy, My Blue Heaven, The Man With Two Brains and Housesitter. There are others but these are the best IMO.

Bill Bevins

This was Steve Martin's first movie and his character kind of matched the standup comedy he was doing at that time. I first heard of him from being on The Smothers Brothers Show in the 60s. He then went on to host SNL a few times. Ashleigh, Google "two wild and crazy guys" and check out the characters he, along with Dan Ackroyd, created on SNL. Also check out the video for the song "King Tut". If you were familiar with Martin's standup and TV work then you probably would have appreciated the Nathan character better.

Bill Bevins

I thought you'd like it more than you did, but my wife, who's younger than I am, didn't really get it, so maybe it's a generational thing or something. My favorite movie of his is Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, I can't wait until you watch that one!

Michael Waldrep

Personal favorite part? "I know what this is! This is cat juggling!!" My feline companion, Ms Teacup Katt, highly approves. 😁😁

Carl Sage

Carl Reiner is Rob’s dad! Unfortunately he passed away last year after playing The Grandfather in a home video remake of “Princess Bride”

Ian Jones

This is my favorite performance of Steve Martin's, but I understand how, if you weren't around when this came out, that it could be dated for you. I'm glad you watched it! It's in my top 10 comedies of all time, honestly. Thank you so much. And the fact that you know "Tonight You Belong To Me" is so great!

Jill Peterson

Happy to see you wearing the shirt I sent you last month. Carl Reiner is Rob Reiner's dad. He directed and wrote for a lot of TV shows in the 50 and 60s. He was Alan Brady on the Dick van Dyke show. He also collaborated with Mel Brooks a few times. The funniest bit was The 2000 Year Old Man. You should check that comedy bit out, Ashleigh.

Bill Bevins

There was no 911 in 1979.
