EARLY ACCESS: Shawshank Redemption

Comments

Yes, I’ve been posting about Field of Dreams too! A must watch!

Brandie Woodward

Ashleigh, remember how Andy kept writing letters about the library? Well, that's my strategy. I'm going to keep mentioning Field of Dreams until you react to it. I'm banking on it happening eventually. You won't be disappointed.

Matt Dellarosa

"Sophie's Choice" (1982) One of Meryl Streep's greatest performances, it won her the Oscar for Best Actress. Bring a couple boxes of tissues.

Elliot Nesterman

No. No one ever has. Next question.

Eric Janssen

not to be random here but has anyone ever recommended Up In Smoke. movie

stephen phillips

I say go back to the 95 one and have a good ol time with some 90s cheese but fun at the same time. It is a great movie to turn your brain off too and a great soundtrack to work out to on. :P

GamerGal8684

Whatever you do, please ignore all this Mortal Kombat hype. There are people reacting to THE OPENING SEVEN MINUTES video!!! Uhhhh, they want people to actually see the whole movie when it comes out, right? They’re trying way too hard to say LOOK EVERYBODY! This one’s not dumb- like MK2 Annihilation (the worst movie based on a video game ever made). Everything is just a rehashing reboot of a remake anyway! That’s why the MCU is so good. Most of it is new enough based on old comic books, the older movie versions don’t really count anymore. With Mortal Kombat tho??? Nope, sorry- that wound is still fresh.

Fatty Boombatty

ain’t nobody got time fo’ dat! Haha 😛 one Hulk origin movie is already too many. All you need to know is he’s a big overpowered green guy who smashes things

Fatty Boombatty

Ashleigh just keep in mind that there are two Hulk movies with different actors playing Bruce Banner. So if you should happen to not like the one you're watching Friday consider giving the other one a try. It's totally different. Not saying you won't like it, so go into it with an open mind. Also, as far as dueling banjos, that would be the movie Deliverance with John Voight, Ned Beatty and Burt Reynolds. There are banjos in O Brother where art thou so maybe that's what you're thinking of. Deliverance is a great movie, just has some intense parts. It's worth watching but does have some slow parts.

Matt Dellarosa

And some movies aren't long enough.

Alexander Fish

One of my favorite movies.just plain great movie.

Dawn

I keep wanting to recommend the supremely badass Seven Samurai (three hours, but feels like twenty minutes), or the just plain fun Around the World in 80 Days, to get her back on the horse. I feel her Mad, Mad World pain, but we can't hide forever.

Eric Janssen

Fun that you watched Amadeus first - that way you have heard a bit of the Marriage of Figaro - the opera that he plays over the speakers. :) - Mozart connection!

Rebecca Monk

Okay, I’ll confess it: I’ve never watched this movie, and mostly because of its fandom: I’m not a fan of Tim Robbins, it was Oscar-bait when it came out, and used to justify Green Mile (which was not well received at the time) for Looking Like It, but ever since, it’s been fan-culted as one of the three video-generation “Something from the 90’s that won Oscars, whenever grownups tell you to watch good films”, along with the obsession over Forrest Gump, and Saving Private Ryan...And then became canonized as one of the same three “Omg, I saw a real drama that wasn’t a YA novel, and it made me FEELZ!”, as if that was the movie’s own magical fault, and not simply an audience having their tastes broadened. So okay, maybe with the abbreviated Ash Highlights, I’ll finally be able to see WHY every reactor fan on YouTube has to put it on reactors’ tongues like giving them the holy Host at mass.

Eric Janssen

All 3 would be great

TheNeonRabbit

If your YouTube subscribers were all in the same place, it would have well over ten times the population of the largest prison in the US. I looked it up.

TheNeonRabbit

So glad you saw this! Absolutely wonderful storytelling.

Luis Torrefranca

LOL at "still doing laundry".

Luis Torrefranca

1994 was such a god tier year for films

eric brown

Movie's still meh... :)

Manuel Johnen

Interesting fact: there actually are revolvers that can fire eight bullets, but they are less common than those which fire six.

Alyssa Anderson

I'm so glad you liked this movie. It's truly a classic. It's a little unrelated but I was also thinking you would like Phenomenon with John Travolta. It's not quite as heavy as this one and has some funny moments to it but it will make you cry also.

Matt Dellarosa

Absolutely LOVE this movie. I also second the recommendations for O Brother, Where Art Thou. Regarding delousing: the singular of lice (like head lice) is louse. So delousing basically means to remove lice from someone. E.g. they're throwing some kind of powdered poison on them. I suppose a parallel would be when an animal goes to the pound, they get dipped for fleas and ticks.

Arki Kali

The 1999 movie, life, is kinda of a comedy version of shawshank redemption.

One of my all time favorite movies! I’d still like to see Fargo and Sling Blade added to your list, as well as O Brother Where Art Thou?.

Kevin Townsend

If you loved this, you HAVE to watch The Green Mile as well. It's another movie based on a Stephen King story (so was Misery). It's also AMAZING and very hard to watch (I guess which is why it's amazing - high highs and low lows).

Nessa Arandur

"Is this movie gonna make me cry?" Oh honey. It will make you cry every time you watch it. Forever.

Nessa Arandur

Ashleigh Ashleigh Ashleigh, this movie easily in my top five of all time, and this reaction, EASILY #1 for me of all time. THANK YOU for allowing us to share your vulnerability. You nailed it at every turn, and after seeing this movie (no kidding) probably 30 times, seeing it through you makes it all new. And I have to say this movie has caught me more than a couple times as I was about to turn in and then I HAD to watch it, so I'd be up at 2am on a work night. Well even though I was about to fall over I saw this on Patreon before turning in and I had to watch THIS!! Lol. Thank you so much. Cathy and I love these, I can't wait to show her! (Though she gets mad when I watch without her. Maybe I'll just not say till after we watch tomorrow. Lol). A+++++++++ Now for another roller coaster I think you'll love the Green Mile, though it's in the same lane as this one so keep that in mind, it's right up there with SR for me.

Brent Fugett

I did warn ya!!!

Vicky phillips

Why always Ernest Scared Stupid? I liked Ernest Goes to Camp on VHS as a kid. Also, we saw Ernest Saves Christmas and Ernest Goes to Jail in the theater. Those movies were much better.

Fatty Boombatty

The way I've heard it, the film's director had always wanted Morgan Freeman to play the narrator, "Red"... And in Stephen King's short story, was a red head, Irishman... So they thought it would be fun to have Tim Robbins ask Morgan Freeman how he got the nickname "Red" and have Morgan Freeman smile with "Maybe it's 'cause I'm Irish"...

James Falato

About to watch the movie. This is my preemptive "watch Ernest Scared Stupid" before the reaction. HA!

William Wall

Great reaction...I loved this movie but haven't seen it in a while...the Brooks and Jake bit got to me as well I love crows and ravens...Andy was played by Tim Robbins some other great movies with/from him are Jacob's Ladder a scary psychological horror film from 1988 and his 1995 directorial effort Dead Man Walking which starred his then companion Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn...also "I took the scenic route" "I bet that's the only 8 inches he's got"...LMAO!! and speaking of food I'm cooking some Jack Daniels Tennessee Honey baby back ribs today! Yum! Blessed rest of Sunday Ashleigh! :)

Paul Johnson

I was wondering if there is an ETA on these titles that you've mentioned you will be reviewing - Tremors, Casablanca, The Godfather, Jurassic Park. Thanks!

Birdie Num Num

Thomas, I heard that they are finally getting ready to make "The Long Walk" which was also in that anthology.

Terri Vineyard

The movie is based off a Stephen King novella in the Different Seasons anthology published in 1982. Also in the book is the novella "The Body" of which the movie Stand By Me was based. That one was directed by Rob Reiner and you'll get to it eventually. Trust me!

Thomas Ivie

Lynnetta that’s truly amazing. I absolutely love stories everyone has of either movie filming locations or history on their exact locations. 🙌🏼🙏🏼

Gio Vidrio

I went to college in Ashland, Ohio a few miles from the Mansfield Reformatory (also known as the Ohio State Reformatory) in Mansfield, Ohio where Shawshank was filmed. While in college, I worked in Mansfield and drove past the reformatory on my way to work. It was always exciting to see it. The tree at the end of the movie stood outside of Mansfield until a few years ago. It was split by a lightning strike in 2011 and then knocked down by wind in 2016.

Lynnetta

I love the original Robocop! They never should have tried to remake it into a cookie cutter “dark Knight” wannabe (only PG13). They put some black armor on him, slapped him on a MOTORCYCLE (that’s really cliche), and even put Gary Oldman in it! Just like commissioner Gordon

Fatty Boombatty

She’s got the cutest ugly cry face I’ve ever seen— in fact I wouldn’t call it ugly at all.

Fatty Boombatty

I think the length is just fine for this. Some movies are too long

Robert Gruhn

Don't shy away from longer movies. For the most part the extra time is about character development and story detail. While some 3+ hour movies aren't helped (i.e. It's A Mad, Mad, Mad World), others (Godfather I & II, Braveheart, Lawrence of Arabia, etc.) find a good balance.

Alexander Fish

Omg! I’ve just looked at the thumbnail for this and I’m so excited to watch you get your ugly cry face on.

Sassy monster

Probably the best Steven King adaptation......other than Stand By Me or The Mist. Please do Robocop (1987)

Timothy Estrada

When i see comments like this i think to myself, "i am so happy i started Ashleigh on the MCU" And you know something else,i think Ashleighs happy too and thats all that matters.

Bleedingreen

It was blind luck that Andy’s cell was on the end by a main wall that he could tunnel through. Nobody disturbed his cell while he was in solitary. 🤔🤔🤔. The outside world after prison was somewhat institutional too. You end up in the same room as Brooks, work bagging groceries at the same store...

Fatty Boombatty

Shes doing The Incredible Hulk with Edward Norton

Bleedingreen

I'm so glad you watched Shawshank, it's one of my all time favorites! I feel like everyone should see this movie, it's so deep. Great review, as always!

Michael Waldrep

When I joined the navy, there was a guy in a bunk bed near me who played Shawshank Redemption every night on his laptop (to fall asleep to it). I guess it had to do with Morgan Freeman’s soothing narrator voice. I always woke up at the same part in the movie... When the old man hangs himself. I told you I’d come back and reveal when!

Fatty Boombatty

Most satisfying ending in the history of movies.

Kate Cassidy

De-lousing = lice = bedbugs

Fatty Boombatty

Ashleigh, I’m so glad you finally watched Shawshank and enjoyed it! I had a feeling you would regardless of the length time on it. Here’s my humble and honest opinion (Uh oh here he goes!) on the MCU. I love Marvel, but let me tell you that I’m not in tune with you watching every single one. I know a lot of you are gonna disagree with me. I’m not denying that you will gain more subscribers and support from many for it, but just wait til someone else in the $100 tier shows up and makes you watch DC, and that’s when things will get messy. Much love and respect for you Ash, you know I got your back. I just wish people can switch out of the $100 tier to give guys like me a chance to prove to you there are PLENTY more brilliantly made classic movies out there for you to watch than what the current trend is in the reaction/commentary world which is becoming redundant at this point. Okay, I’m done put up your dukes! 🥊🥊😂

Gio Vidrio

Oh dear God. OK let me get a drink and we can do this

Elisa H.

Glad you watched this one Ash. Its one of my favorite movies. I dont usually cry during movies, but i was right there with you in regards to Brooks. So sad, but a great film. Interesting fact... the title of this movie didnt interest me so i didnt even see it for the first time until a couple years ago. I think the title kindof hurt it at the box office. Funny how a great movie can be hidden by something as simple as the title.

ROG

LOVE this movie! I'm so glad you liked it. If you loved this one then you will love The Green Mile. Its also a classic and beautifully written.

I'm on the Beans level. She does have watchalong videos for the movies she's reacting to. I did the watchalong for Iron Man and it was fun to hear her laugh, freak out and be confused about the future of the movies. So far, very happy with the level I'm at.

David Rincon

Which Hulk will you be doing? The one with Eric Bana or the one with Edward Norton. Hope she only does one MCU movie a month. It may take her a couple of years to get through them all, but if you start with Iron Man, it's taken 13 years to get this far.

Bill Bevins

Ashleigh will have the waterworks going on full when she watches that one. Better have lots of tissues.

Bill Bevins

The green mile is another great one if you haven’t seen it already. Sad but still a touching and beautiful story

Sarah Doty

Thinking of bumping up to the Beans level. Any one else on that level? Is it worth it? I just turned 65 this week which made a couple of pensions kick in so I have a little extra income. Does Ashleigh post a link to her watching the whole movie not just the watchalong?

Bill Bevins

First Steven King movie i saw that wasn't a horror movie. Delousing is done to incoming prisoners to get rid of lice, which was a problem back in the time period this takes place in. Brooks was played by James Whitmore. He has been in a lot of movies since the 40s. Good ones include Them!, Planet of the Apes, Battlecry and Give Em Hell, Harry. The woman in the first poster was Rita Hayworth. She was considered one of the most beautiful woman in Hollywood. Good movies with her are Gilda, Affair in Trinidad, and The Lady From Shanghai. The last poster with Raquel Welch was showing a scene from One Million Years, B.C. When I was a preteen, she was the heartthrob most young boys had the hots for. Good movies she was in include Fantastic Voyage, Bandalero, Kansas City Bomber, Mother Juggs and Speed, and the Three Musketeers (73) and the Four Musketeers(74). In the Musketeer movies Raquel and actress Faye Dunaway kept competing to see who can show the most cleavage, which makes those movies highly recommended.

Bill Bevins

Loved the reaction to this one. Such a great movie! I did figure Tim was going to get it, but maybe not. 😀

MrBamaRed

The girl in the movie was Rita Hayworth in the movie Gilda that’s a good movie

Dylan

...knew you were going to cry... we were waiting for the moments... ;)

Sentence Enhancers.

Ashleigh Burton

Maybe that's what I was thinking of!

Ashleigh Burton

Appropriate that you used the dolphin sound effect from spongebob for Clancy Brown’s sentence enhancers🤣

When I hear dueling banjos I think deliverance
