WATCH ALONG: Robin Hood Men in Tights

So - I had a corrupted file around the 43 minute mark.  I've edit to show you where there might be a little jump, hopefully just a few seconds and nothing major. :)

Reminder: you must have your own copy to sync up.  You can stream this on Youtube, Google Play, Apple TV, Vudu, and amazon Prime! :)

WATCH ALONG: Robin Hood Men in Tights

Comments

Next Mel Brooks movie should be High Anxiety, a spoof of Alfred Hitchcock movies. Or Silent Movie where the only spoken word is by a mime.

Please watch hot shots

The English Accent joke: most people who play Robin Hood in Hollywood are either American or Irish or Scottish. :-) Cary Elwes was, I believe, the first to be actually English and play Robin hood in Hollywood.

Oouga

So, does this mean you'll cover Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves? This movie had a lot of references to that.

Oouga

I think this was the first Mel Brooks film where he really kind of started to get railroaded by the movie rating system. All in all, though, it's a solid flick.

Kristofer Foster

Kevin Costner is a great actor, not having a British accent is whatever, but he did great in the role. On the other hand, it was one of Alan Rickman's best performances, he won a lot of awards for it. Also, it had the most iconic screams ever delivered by Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio. Such a food movie. Also, why did Richard Gere not get the same flack for not having an English accent in First Knight? I am ranting Prince of Thieves was a great flick.

Vega

It was from the Atlanta Braves.

Vega

Now you have to watch prince of thieves.

Vega

Note the actress who played Marion has a lot movies and Television credits to her name.

Beth O'Brien

Oh My Gosh your reactions too funny. So, glad you made an executive decision to watch it. The actress that played Marion is originally from my hometown in Ohio. She was married to John Ritter.

Beth O'Brien

Watched you on my iPad & the movie on my phone, had a lot of laughs as I haven’t seen the movie in a good long while.

Christy

It's absolutely worth watching and a pretty enjoyable action romp. If for no other reason, watching Alan Rickman chew the scenery makes it worthwhile.

T.J. Gengler

Streamed the movie on my T.V. and had your reaction on my cell phone. Great reaction!

I hope you get around to watching Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, which is a fantastic film.

Men in Tights is one of my favorite Mel Brooks movies, the other favorite being Blazing Saddles - so we're totally on par with that. Bill Bevins (above) pretty much clears up anything you were asking about. I've seen this movie about a million times and even I didn't get the Baygall and Loxley (bagel and lox) connection! LOL Mel Brooks is just so gifted when it comes to puns - and not just the dumb ones but really clever and funny ones. If you've never seen Abbott & Costello, I recommend a couple of short clips they've done on youtube. They are a really old comedy duo (Vaudeville old...) and they have done a few movies as well. Some of my favorite skits you can find include 7x13=21 and Who's on First (which itself is legendary!)

Emily Smith

I don't see the issue either Thomas. Why would you watch them any other way.

Mark Sylvester

I'm so glad you liked this! Fantastic watch-along.

Jill Peterson

The "Tomahawk Chop" was something people did at Redskins games, and was hugely controversial for insensitivity to Native Americans... so of course, Mel made a joke of it.

Jill Peterson

"Hot Shots" covers a lot of movies beyond "Top Gun", but the absurdist take on the references should be enough to get Ashleigh through, even not knowing the core "joke".

Thomas Yanez

I’m surprised you didn’t pick up on the bright green exit sign when Robin is at the top of the stairs first time in the castle. Overall fantastic executive decision to choose this for your movie watching adventure. Strongly recommend Hot Shots, but maybe after watching Top Gun first

Ullatec

I don't get why there is any question about the MCU movies? Just watch them as they were released, like they are intended - nay, designed, to be watched.

Thomas Yanez

The edit didn't throw the timing off at all. I think I was a second behind you on the watch along and was a second ahead after the edit. There were a lot of gags you have missed. People who lived in the desert were derogatorily called "camel jockeys" which is why there were jockeys on the camels. The guy with the magnificent mustache is Avery Schreiber, who was part of a comedy duo in the 60s called Burns and Schreiber. He appeared in many TV shows and did Doritos commercials. The guy with the bending bow was Chuck McCann, a comedian who also appeared in many TV shows and commercials in the 60s. Lady Latrine was Tracy Ullman. She had one of the first TV shows on FOX network. It was on her show that the Simpsons first appeared. The gag of "Loxley and Baygells go together" is a play on lox and bagels. Brooks always puts Jewish humor in his movies. When Marlon Brando tried out for the Godfather he put cotton balls in his cheeks to give himself bigger jowls, hence the pulling the cotton ball joke. The tomahawk chop and song is done by fans of the K.C. Chiefs and Atlants Braves. They sent a message by FOX instead of FAX. "Hey Abbott!" Is from Abbott & Costello. Lou Costello used to yell it when he was scared or in trouble. This movie needs to be watched more than once to pick up everything.

Bill Bevins

1:27:33 Abbott and Costello humor. "Hey Abbott!"

William Wall

1:22:44 Atlanta Braves tomahawk chop. The Atlanta Braves are a baseball team.

William Wall

Kevin Costner played as Robin Hood in "Prince of Thieves" and did not speak with a English dialect. That is the "English accent" joke. "Prince of Thieves" is what this movie is mostly spoofed from.

William Wall

The shoes A-Choo pumped up in the fight were a thing in the 90's were a thing where you press the button and air went into you hightops (which were also a bigger thing in the 90's than today.)

William Wall

Picked this up yesterday to watch today. Have not seen this in 10+ years. Good time to revisit it.

William Wall

Kevin Costner tried to make a Robin Hood movie. He was awful, as per his usual acting. It's never the character; it's always just Kevin. No accent for Robin when everyone else in the film had an accent. Terrible. That's why the joke about Cary doing an English accent.

Jill Peterson

I ripped this DVD years ago and have it on my local Plex server. Haven't watched it in a few years now...so perfect excuse.

Keith Jones

Have it on DVD. Will watch later.

Bill Bevins
