EARLY ACCESS: Airplane! 1980

My FIRST TIME EVER watching "AIRPLANE!" from 1980 - and I've been told it's like Blazing Saddles... so I'm a little nervous.

EARLY ACCESS: Airplane! 1980

Comments

hi happy late birthday. wait till you see the naked gun. LOL!!!! take care, blessings

stephen phillips

Have you ever seen a grown man naked? That joke wouldn’t FLY today... haha, get it?

Fatty Boombatty

Be careful dah-ling! You can still get a copyright strike for singing Stayin Alive! I must say, you were very much on-key for that 😉 good job

Fatty Boombatty

Nothing a little (or lot of) duct tape won't fix!

Thomas Yanez

Hey Ashleigh, if you have problems with those shelves in the future, try using cavity anchors. 🙂

Leslie Nielsen was the doctor on the airplane

So, this is one of mine and my husband’s favorite movies we’ve seen it too many times to count. You will need to watch it again because we always find something new we didn’t notice. One being the sound of the airplane engines. We always find ourselves quoting the movie so much fun. Loved your reactions.

Beth O'Brien

Need an extra day for movies Wednesday hump day ..

Dawn

Peter Graves, the white haired pilot, was the commander of the IMF force on Mission:Impossible.

Alexander Fish

Barbara Billingsley, the "I speak jive" lady was everybody's favorite TV mom in the 50s sitcom Leave It To Beaver.

Alexander Fish

"Ernest Scared Stupid" would have been better. 😛

William Wall

Okay, maybe I am not going to watch it. Yours is either missing scenes (which explains the "Mayo Clinic" joke missing from yours), or you edited much of the movie out.

William Wall

First time watching this. I picked it up at the flea market this morning expecting it to win. That and I already own "Stripes".

William Wall

Other movies of this style are Top Secret, Hot Shots (part I or II)

Fred Zeppelin

I'm so glad you liked Airplane, it's one my favorite movies! Yes, "Don't call me Shirley" comes from this movie. Leslie Nielsen, who plays the doctor, is the main character in the Naked Gun, which is a similar style movie done by the same people. Highly recommend.

Michael Waldrep

Another thing about this movie is that it is an early example of a movie that plays with the credits. In this case, inserting comments and jokes into the credit text. But, also, an MCU-style post-credit sequence for one last callback to one of the movie's recurring jokes.

Thomas Yanez

Awesome reaction! This movie is a riot! This was the 2nd film from the creative team of the Zucker bros. and Jim Abrahams...Their 1st film "Kentucky Fried Movie" is multi blackout sketches spoofing movies/TV/commercials etc. and has the same type rapid fire gags it's definitely worth a look! BTW....loved your Bee Gees impression! :)

Paul Johnson

I was watching this sometime last year and my kids, then 15 and 13, slowly trickled into the room and basically had the same reaction as you. Over the next few weeks, anytime I would come home from work they'd be watching Airplane! again. This movie is the definition of classic.

Terri Vineyard

Like "Blazing Saddles", as satire of a genre, his film was also I'm sure, conceived of during and made just after the era of "Disaster" movies, "Earthquake", "The Towering Inferno", and the "Airport" series: "Airport" (1970), "Airport '75" (1974), "Airport '77" (1977), "The Concorde ... Airport '97" to name a few. As many who follow this film know, it's framework is the 1957 film "Zero Hour". The producers bought the rights to the script and story for almost nothing, and created this masterpiece. Once you have seen "Airplane" try goin back in-time and watching "Zero Hour" and not start cracking up.

100%, I love the part in the very beginning when the announcers on the airport intercom start arguing about the white zone and the red zone. Kills me every time.

Laura Neary Smith

Please don't call her Shirley.

Bill Bevins

Surely this is one of your best reactions!

Mark Sylvester

She does have a great singing voice!

Mark Sylvester

So you see kids, Ashleigh will give us the content you want whether she likes it or not. Airplane was a great reaction. Can we all acknowledge her gorgeous singing voice during her impromptu breakdown performance from The Little Mermaid??🧜‍♀️ Insane.

Gio Vidrio

Fun!

Jill Peterson

In Australia, this movie was called "Flying High". A much more suitable title.

Marcus

Glad you enjoyed it! Looking forward to the Live later.

Tyler Foster

13 "Stops" during the review, its great

David Harrison

Another very fun reaction/review! I didn't know whether to laugh or cry at your mini-breakdown; you were laughing, so I thought it was alright to do the same, but then I felt bad for laughing, anyway. :) Absolutely loving the Patreon, Ashley, never stop, okay? Take care, be safe!

Michael Sailor

Airplane requires more than one viewing just because of all the visual gags and quips that speed by so fast. For example when the guy is getting ready while the other one is being attacked by the dog it looks the whole time like he's looking at the mirror since he's staring straight ahead but then he steps through and u realize it's actually a doorway. Or the reason the guy had mayonnaise all around is because he's from the Mayo clinic (which is a health care thing) The sequel is also quite good.

Elisa H.

This film was unique at the time for taking serious actors and putting them in a farce. Two of the actors had their careers rejuvenated because of this movie. Leslie Neilsen was a serious actor before this but his career was on the decline. After Airplane he became known for doing parodies. The Naked Gun movies are well worth watching. Lloyd Bridges, the "I picked a bad day to quit..." guy was also a serious actor who played mostly heavies in film noir movies early in his career. He had a TV show called Seahunt in the 60s. He is also the dad of actors Beau Bridges and Jeff Bridges. Jeff was in Iron Man and you will see him when you watch The Big Lebowski. Lloyd Bridges is great as the President in the movies Hot Shots and Hot Shots Part Deux.

Bill Bevins

One of the best comedies followed by one of the best dramas.

Ian Jones

This movie was a parody of not only the Airport disaster films of the 70s but also the 1957 movie Zero Hour. They even use a lot of the exact same dialogue as Zero Hour. To avoid any potential lawsuit, Zucker-Abraham-Zucker bought the rights to Zero Hour. I saw it a couple of years ago. Though it was meant to be a serious movie, you can't help but laugh at the references from Airplane.

Bill Bevins

I knew you'd like it and you didn't disappoint! These older movies are doing something else for you. History lessons on the technology that no longer exists! And let me add, you have a great singing voice! And an ability to write custom lyrics to match the music! I could see a hardware store wanting that for a DIY advertisement. Or even Tim Allen's new show, "Assembly Required".

Mark Lee

This is gonna be hilarious. 👍😁 Happy Easter everybody. 💗💗

Mandy Sherratt

Yay!

Can't wait to watch this after church! Happy Easter!
