Another Millennial Movie Member Pick - so a big THANK YOU to TJ for supporting the me, beans, and the channel. As a MMMember, you get to pick one movie a month that I react too - it can be any year, any genre, anything!

It's a baffling choice but I respect it much more than, say, Iron Man. If you're going to spend a lot of money to choose movies, have 'em be hidden gems, forgotten classics, deep cuts, things that could never win a poll.

Hopefully TJ still feels confident in his decision. I imagine he might be getting some blowback, but I know that if I had the top-level patron power for a year, I'd choose a mix of great classics...and some stuff I love but would never win a poll!

I admit I have not rewatched 12 Angry Men in a long time, so maybe he says he investigated, but is it an investigation if the juror happens to own the same knife?

There were a whole string of classic play-movie remakes for TV during the 90's, when Jack Lemmon and George C. Scott were retiring from more active movie work, and this one was coming fresh off of a big Lemmon & Scott made-for-TV remake of "Inherit the Wind". (Also with no point for remaking the Spencer Tracy/Frederic March 50's version.)
As for why THIS guy remembered it, think it was a case of Telephone Game, after another reactor-fan obsessed with the 50's movie told him he "had" to watch it, he dug up the first copy he could find on YouTube (the color one, of course), and told everyone else, "Dude, you HAVE to watch the 90's 12 Angry Men!”…Who’s the bigger fool, the fanboy, or the fanboy who follows him?

Shame... for her.

Ehm, you mustn't fail to mention that the remakes of "The Thing" and "The Fly" are very, very, VERY different from their respective original movies... you can still watch those first and afterwards go back to the 50s-originals without having spoiled those for yourself... :)

I watch the original in high school and loved. Now I have not watched or even knew of the 1997 version but I doubt it could compare to the original which was a moving Suspenseful film. Even if you don’t watch on the channel as a reaction video you should watch the 1957 version to compare. My bf and love watching s your videos and can’t wait till you start adding more content. Keep em coming.
2021-04-02 16:39:17 +0000 UTC
Having now watched this reaction, even if this television adaptation can't live up to the 1957 original, I certainly can't fault it for assembled talent. There's maybe one person in this ensemble that I don't recognize, and all of the ones that I do are great actors, plus you had William Friedkin behind the camera. I understand the desire for Ashleigh to have seen the original, but I think people are making this out to be far more of a downgrade than it actually is.

I think sometimes these really awesome stories get remade because a new generation of actors loves the project so much that they want a chance to be part of it. If it is left as only being made once they miss out on it. That is the way I look at it anyway.

One of the most pointless remakes, ever... it literally adds NOTHING to the original except color...

I was lucky enough to see the 1996 Broadway revival with George C. Scott as Drummond and Charles Durning as Brady. Scott was clearly quite ill, leaning on the defense table when he stood. Nonetheless, his performance was extraordinary.

I know a lot are disappointed that it was the remake and not the original, can't really blame you because now a days too many remakes and reboots have practically all failed, but that's because of the social environment we are currently living in, remember that The Fly, The Thing are also remakes, I think this movie lived up to the original now had it been made now it would be a disaster, each character would end up representing a race, culture, life style, etc and have each one gives bleeding heart speech about their troubles totally forgetting about the case.

Ok, I watched the reaction and it turns out I've seen this version. It just wasn't as memorable as the original apparently.
I was on a jury back in 1999 with the defendant accused of several felonies and misdemeanors, the most serious betting aggravated assault using a brick. Both the defense and prosecution made good cases and most of the jury were leaning towards guilty for the assault charge. But there were a couple jurors who made good arguments for reasonable doubt in several of the witnesses testimony. We ended up finding the defendant guilty of most of the misdemeanors and one felony, but the assault was not guilty. It goes to show how a strong-willed juror can sway the rest their way. Looking back, I believe we made the right decision with our verdict.
The remake gets 3.75/5 stars.

You are now required, by law, to watch one of the best extended comedy skits ever made, "12 Angry Men" on the show "Inside Amy Schumer" in which a jury is convened to decide whether or not Amy Schumer is hot enough to be on television. It is an AMAZING skit:

1) The reason this is in one room is that it was originally a play staged for TV.
2) I LOVE plays and the way they translate to film. (See, for example, Glengarry Glen Ross, an AMAZING film based on a play.) Plays focus much more on character and plot than action which is why they make such memorable stories. While you won't watch this film again, you may well remember it for the rest of your life and, should you have any children, you may show it to them to teach them about our justice system.
3) The original was better.
4) Love your stuff!
5) Watch Buckaroo Banzai!

I had already pulled my DVD of the original off the shelf to revisit it when I came back and noticed all the comments about how this is the 1997 remake. I can't speak to this version because I haven't seen it, but I did like the Russian remake from 2007, which is just called 12.

I wonder what she would think of the Original? Its a classic of course but would she rate it high? You can't watch it now of course because she would compare it to this one. Shame really as seeing her react to the original would have been interesting.

Hi Ashleigh. I know its not your fault and I know you say opinions are like assholes..but you just watched the wrong version of this film. The original is 10 times better than this even though the outcomes are identical. The original has more suspense and is a far more compelling story overall. It is widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made. Once again I understand this wasn't your fault and you weren't to know but please get a hold of the original and watch it with Hubben in your own time. Knowing the ending doesn't spoil the movie.

I never knew this version existed, but the thing that took me by surprise is who directed it. William Friedkin directed The Exorcist. The only thing I know from him is he pushed a lot of buttons on sets to get the actors prepared (or unprepared) for what’s gonna happen to them in certain scenes. Actress Ellen Burstyn had back problems for many years ever since he personally yanked her from behind to make it look like she flew across the room when Regan slapped her in the face in the head twisting scene. Interesting movie choice TJ! Yet another movie Ashleigh forgot to rate out of 5 stars. I’d say it land 3.5 or 4 depending on how you look at it.

Great cast, but it lacks the intensity of the original. While I've been promoting newer comedies like Birdcage and Analyze This, we do have some great movies from the 60s like In The Heat of the Night for serious and The Odd Couple for comedies (the original)) As for really funny movies try Some Like it Hot.

While I'd have been more excited if this had been the original, I'm actually glad that TJ picked a newer version for Ashleigh. I haven't seen this version, but based on the clips from the reaction, it seems very much in line with the original. I was worried that they would try to 'modernize' it by taking it out of the one room and adding unnecessary action. The thing that made me love the original so much was that everything happened in one room through dialogue and great acting only. This version had that same energy. I want Ashleigh to fall in love with old movies, and since she didn't love this one, I wouldn't want her to think that the reason she didn't love it was because it was old.
Lynnetta
2021-04-01 15:50:50 +0000 UTC
Yeah, another reason it doesn’t adapt that well to the 90s. But I don’t mind that they made the effort. It’s decent.

Have to check this out though. Replacing the white racist with a black racist seems gimmicky. Love Jack Lemmon and George C. But nothing can beat Henry Fonda and Lee J. Cobb. To see George C. Scott at his best see “Dr Strangelove”. And Lemmon has a ton of great performances from “Some Like it Hot” to “Glengarry Glenn Ross”
Ian Jones
2021-04-01 15:43:52 +0000 UTC
While I appreciate the diverse casting of this version, I find that the racial impact of the piece is diminished by not having an all white jury. The piece is partly about prejudice and racial stereotypes which gets a little lost.
Alexander Fish

As someone who has been on a jury before let me point out a major flaw in 12 Angry Men. It occurs in both versions. When the jurors were discussing the knife and it's uniqueness, one juror pulls out a duplicate knife and says he found that at a pawn shop. Jurors are not allowed to do their own investigation. They are only supposed to consider evidence brought up in trial. These jurors were discussing evidence that wasn't scrutinized or submitted to the court. All that needed to happen was one juror telling the bailiff to tell the judge a juror did his own investigation and that juror would have been dismissed and an alternative juror put in his place. Or more likely you would have a mistrial.

Big fan of the original, never saw this one. Just like the original this one had many stars of the day in it. After watching Ashleigh's edited version, I can see it's exactly the same, so I question why it was remade. Nothing seemed to be added to the story to enhance it. Would have been better off watching the original. It was done better.

We're doing Made for TV movies now? Really, I can't imagine this being ANYTHING like the 1957 version, which is the acknowledged masterpiece. EDIT : I've already conceded in other posts that I should give it another chance since it's been 24 years, but I'm not deleting this post because I want to point a big flashing arrow at "Made for TV movies" as that is a slippery slope towards some really crappy stuff. Then again, "Shogun". I don't know! Stop looking at me!
