EARLY ACCESS: Big Trouble in Little China

Comments

Wonderful movie. And, I still listen to the soundtrack on occasion. It introduced me to the Appalachian music genre.

Thomas Yanez

They remade "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels"? WTF.

Thomas Yanez

I've got plenty of snacks. Go for it, Ashleigh!

Thomas Yanez

Also, a quick glance at Rotten Tomatoes can give some insight, just make sure you check both the critic and the audience scores. In this case, both the critics and audience score "Big Trouble" higher than "Overboard". I agree with them, as it is probably the only Kurt Russell movie that I have NEVER had any interest in watching again.

Thomas Yanez

Shhhh! No one is supposed to know who that is. According to Hubben anyways. 🤣

Gio Vidrio

Sorry, I was replying to Lauren and Manuel. Didn't mean to hijack your thread.

Ken

HEY YOU KIDS! Get off my lawn. ;) (JK)

Jill Peterson

Are you replying to me? I don't know what you're talking about. I'm sorry.

Jill Peterson

Yeah, my mistake. I just reread it and he was talking about Broadcast News not 9 to 5. Regardless, this all seems like a massive overreaction.

Ken

Also he didn't say that it wasn't female driven, some people just read his post incorrectly...

Manuel Johnen

Also, both have Victor Wong in them, playing kinda the same character... :P

Manuel Johnen

The comment about 9 to 5? That was super mild. Dude said he liked the movie but (bafflingly) said it wasn’t female driven, then later agreed with you, reiterated he loved the movie, and apologized for the confusion. A difference of opinion, or in this case maybe a misunderstanding, isn’t necessarily an “attack”

Ken

I also feel like I can’t safely comment on here. It’s making me question wether to stay, as it’s not moderated. I suggested some films I thought she’d like and some dude attacked my choice and questioned its place as the genre I recommended. I’ve been a film technician in the industry for 17 years. I didn’t ask an opinion. I was stating a fact. I hate this kind of environment.

Lauren D Martin

Well, technically they only remade Overboard for the chik-flik audience because MGM had gone bankrupt so the property was free for the taking (the same year they remade "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" and "Child's Play"), but yes, the original was better. And yes, somebody wanted to remake Escape From NY, too, because it was free.

Eric Janssen

People will never agree on "Actual Classics." Which is why the poll feature is so valuable.

Kristen North

Great reaction to a great film. Reminds me, you really should watch Overboard, but I had a thought . . . Watch Overboard but THEN watch the Overboard remake. It might make a really great, fun, interesting remake theme month where you watch the original for Monday then watch the remake for Friday.

PieHard13

I like it when she goes bob, bob, bob

Brett Delbridge

My soul swims through the darkest depths of black magic to be here. Indeed!

Gordon Davis

Yes!!!!

E.T. without the (kid-pandering) yuck and WITH Jeff Bridges. Important distinction.

Eric Janssen

I made this suggestion for her a while back! It’s definitely gonna happen. Especially after seeing Always with Holly Hunter & John Goodman.

Gio Vidrio

“Big Trouble” is always fun to watch. Another fun movie in my opinion is “O Brother Where Art Thou?” Some great music, too.

Kevin Townsend

Overboard seems to be the most requested movie on this thread. Overboard, Steel Magnolias and Mr. Mom were three if my sisters favorite movies when I was growing up so I've seen them all for many times. I'm actually not a big fan of Steel Magnolias, it's a little too much of a chick flick if you'll pardon the term. Overboard is a great movie though and can be enjoyed by just about anyone.

Matt Dellarosa

Overboard was good enough that they tried to make a new one, original is better. Let's not forget 'Escape from New York'....

David Harrison

There's enough there for everyone. I personally hate "Starman", but I bet Ashleigh would enjoy it (it's like "E.T." without the yuck)...

Manuel Johnen

Let me tell you one thing, "Big Trouble in Little China" is definitely more of a classic right now than "Overboard", which is basically already forgotten.. and it's also the far superior movie. :P

Manuel Johnen

I'm pretty sure we all know what universe you're referring to. I just hope you're not planning to watch all of them because it will take you about a decade.

Matt Dellarosa

And what are the objective defining characteristics of movies that are "ACTUALLY classics"? If you and I disagree about whether a movie qualifies, does that mean one of us is demonstrably wrong?

T.J. Gengler

lol, you should ask your parents if they ever saw "the computer wore tennis shoes" it was the first time I ever saw Kurt and it was the start of my crush on him!

SassMacfru

I actually mix the storylines of the two of them up all the time. 😛

Heather Qualy

I was surprised at your enthusiasm for this one, Ashleigh. I LUUUUURV me a Kurt Russell, but this movie is so....odd, I could never get into it. I don’t like when you say you like an actor and everybody starts recommending everything they’ve been in, because I want you to stick to movies that are ACTUALLY classics, not just movies someone likes. Many times the classic movie an actor made, isn’t their best one. That said, for Kurt Russell, I really wish you had gotten to Overboard for Valentine’s. Besides being a better movie (so so funny, and Kurt is sooooooooo freakin’ charming), I would consider Overboard more of a classic than this one. My parents hadn’t even heard of Big Trouble until tonight. It was very “cult 80s”. Known and nostalgic for a specific time. Overboard, is one that is the “should have seen by now” category. Known to a much broader audience in a much larger age range (and still shown on tv quite often).

Heather Qualy

Can't argue with that!

Paul Johnson

Starman would be pretty cool as well

Paul Johnson

I see nothing wrong with advocating against another person's movie suggestions so long as you're restricting your respectfully presented comments to intelligent, non-spoilery thoughts about the film itself. If you're complaining about the people who like the movie, you're gone too far.

T.J. Gengler

...Prince of Darkness. In the Mouth of Madness.

Manuel Johnen

Dark Star? Assault on Precinct 13? :)

Paul Johnson

Agreed...I've seen plenty of movies I hate recommended here but I don't advocate against them or insult the person who recommended them...as the saying goes: "It's only a movie!" :)

Paul Johnson

No, we DON'T...Although The Fog might be up her alley, and I confess I'd like some reactor to finally redeem the besmirched name of Halloween III: Season of the Witch, but I'm not sure if Ash is the right pick to do it.

Eric Janssen

There's no need to come for someone if they don't like a movie. Why can't we all just be nice to each other? I feel like I can't safely comment here.

Jill Peterson

We have to get her through John Carpenter's entire filmography...

Manuel Johnen

A great pick for Hallowbeans.

Tyler Foster

So jazzed you finally watched Big Trouble in Little China. I’ve been trying to get my Husband to watch it forever, but he’s one of those who falls asleep as soon as you push play unless it’s something HE WANTS to see. I don’t know why it’s one of my favorite movies, but anytime I see it’s on I HAVE TO watch it.

Christy

I also mentally link big trouble with golden child, lol

Elisa H.

Big trouble in little China is the definition of a random ass movie that is simply a fun watch, just meant to entertain the hell out of you.

Elisa H.

This makes me think you should watch The golden child with Eddie Murphy

Brett Delbridge

Maybe I'm just the sick freak but does anyone else like the idea of Ashleigh watching THE RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD (1985)?

T.J. Gengler

Glad you loved this. And thanks for the Beans love at the end - it made my Friday.

Nessa Arandur

He’s also in another great spoof movie “Balls of Fury”

Charles Edwards

Marvel movies

Edward Olson

Constantly quoted. “I’ve swallowed a lot of aggression... and a lot of pizzas!”

JT Brennan

And Chloe? Love. Love. :)

Amy Silknitter

oh my goodness, is it harry potter? Say it's harry potter.

Amy Silknitter

hi another movie I'd highly recommend. almost similar to this one is The Golden Child with Eddie Murphy. came out the same year. super funny!!!!! big laughs. also about supernatural stuff.

stephen phillips

Thank you, thank you, thank you. Big Trouble is one of my Favorites. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Facotry is a must see when you get the chance.

Crimson Possum

I thought you'd like Big Trouble! Yes, it is random and fun! I'm still holding out hope for Ruthless People, only 1 hr and 33 mins. Just sayin'.

Michael Waldrep

For the 17 years we've been together, my husband and I have answered the question of, "Who?" with, "Jack Burton, ME!"

Terri Vineyard

I am so happy you enjoyed this movie. Also, tango and cash is great and I definitely recommend you watch like everybody else has mentioned. I’m a new Patreon but WILL be watching again tomorrow as I love you videos. Give kisses to beans for me. Xx

Gemma Clement

Would love to see a "Porky's" reaction! :)

Paul Johnson

I second anyone else who has said Tango & Cash, you see his butt, or a stunt butt anyway, it's great late 80's action.

I know that stripes has been brought up in the early days for you to watch. You should check it out as it is Bill Murray and John Candy!! I also recommend good morning viet nam and mrs doubt fire for great robin williams ablibs.

SassMacfru

David Lo Pan(James Hong) was the Chinese restaurant maitre'd from "Seinfeld"...."5...10 minutes" "Cartwright?"....also glad to see you enjoying a movie again! Some other Kurt Russell films worth a look are "Breakdown"(1997) and Quentin Tarantino's "Death Proof"(2007)

Paul Johnson

Yeah! Back on track. Hope you get to "Hoosiers" for March Madness.... it is a basketball movie after all.

ROG

I thought I had seen this movie when I was little, but none of that felt familiar. Regardless, it was a fun reaction!! I hope you add Overboard to your Kurt Russell list!

Lynnetta

If you like Kurt Russell, then you should try OVERBOARD. You should also try some Robin Williams for insanity (BIRDCAGE, MRS. DOUBTFIRE, and GOOD MORNING VIET NAM)

Jon Krantz

And after that They Live, Christine, and Escape From New York.

Bill Bevins

SO, glad you've watched this movie!!! One of my favorite cult-classics. Another cult-classic I think you'd enjoy, if you haven't seen it, is another collaboration between Russell and Carpenter: Escape From New York (I apologize if you've reacted, and I've forgotten; I'm an old guy *L*). Fantastic review, as always, thanks so much! Stay safe and take good care!

Michael Sailor

that was fun dooes make up for mad mad mad world.

Ken - Kendo161

Yes.... definitely Escape From New York (John Carpenter) if you like the Russel / Carpenter combo

Hey Ashleigh just realized you may not see the IG DM let me know if I'm being stupid, you get me in this mood 😉😎. so I repost it here for ya.I came across a short video about blazing saddles you might enjoy thought I'd share it with ya I learned a few things I found interesting. now gonna go watch your big trouble reaction YAY 😜😊❤️ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vf3R1KwYTwo have a great day sugah

Ken - Kendo161

First and foremost, don’t apologize for being you Ashleigh. That takes the fun of out what you say and do in your videos. Actually it makes your videos twice as better. You keep on keeping on and you will see everyone will love to hate you and hate to love you (in the best way possible). You’re the most like able person I know, which is why we’re friends. Also, the guy exploding was a gag that John Carpenter was looking forward to filming back then, and it left audiences reacting the same way you did. Ha! Next JC movie you oughta check out is The Fog.

Gio Vidrio

She very much enjoyed it though. Ha!

Gio Vidrio

I love this movie. Junk food for my brain. Hilarious!

Mo Vetta

Love the reactions as always. The movie influenced one of my favorite games of all time, Mortal Kombat, so it is always fun to watch. Also a young Kim Cattrell - Lassie behave!

MrBamaRed

I saw Buckaroo Bonzai when it first came out. Weird movie but enjoyable. Another movie with Christopher Lloyd as John Big Booty. "That's John Bigboo-TAY."

Bill Bevins

Not sure Ashleigh would have fun with The Hateful Eight, but definitely Escape From New York (also John Carpenter), Captain Ron, Used Cars, and Death Proof (which I think would go over better between the two Tarantinos).

Tyler Foster

Highly recommend The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension if you liked this. They're by the same writer (W.D. Richter) and have a similar sci-fi/adventure/comedy energy. There was even a rumor that Big Trouble was originally written as a sequel, but that's a myth.

Tyler Foster

Other Kurt Russell movies worth checking out: Escape From New York, Hateful Eight, Overboard, Tango & Cash, Death Proof, Backdraft, 3000 Miles to Graceland, Captain Ron, Used Cars and Disney movie The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes.

Bill Bevins

I think I have watched this every year since it came out... seriously. Its so much fun... and I love how Jack is one of the most useless heroes in cinema history.

Saw this movie when it first came out. Thought it was fun, entertaining but silly. Best not to over analyze this and put away your logical thinking to enjoy this movie. Monsters were comically amateurish IMO. But a fun ride.

Bill Bevins

I watched this movie at 6 years old. WIldly inappropriate. But I loved it.

Adolfo Acosta

Hilarious as always. Love ya!

Jerrod Acree

One of my favorite movies from my childhood. love that movie.
