MISERY WATCH ALONG

Comments

did you know stephen king wrote this book after he had his own car crash, and it inspired this story - he wasnt kidnapped though lol

Gail Davie

This is actually the first time I've seen this film. It was great watching it with you, and I loved the reaction. It's one of the better adaptations of a Stephen King novel. In my opinion, the book is better, but only for reasons that can't be helped. In the book, you get more of Annie's backstory, and you get to know Paul Sheldon a little more. But it's because books can give more characterization than a movie, the kind that if you tried to do it in a film, it would make it too long or boring, or kill the pacing. The one thing I think the movie did that was actually better than the book is to give more personality to the police aspect. I don't even think the Sheriff and his wife are in the book at all. If they are, then just barely. Having those scenes in the movie with the Sheriff and his wife were sort of like getting bonus scenes added to the version of the story in the book. If you're looking for other adaptations of King's books, I recommend checking out Delores Claiborne. The movie came out in 1995, and also stars Kathy Bates. I've never watched the whole thing, but I've heard it was good, and it may be worth it for you to see Bates in another role from a King novel. I also recommend reacting to Shawshank Redemption, though I think you already did that one. Finally, I highly recommend you react to The Green Mile, which I have seen and absolutely love. It was published as a six part mini series of books by King in the nineties. It's long, but it's well worth the time.

I had only read the book, and I was really very pleasantly surprised and pleased with this adaptation. It's always so wonderful to be able to watch these films with you Miss Ashleigh.

Kristofer Foster

My wife and I watched this with you last night on the YouTubes, absolutely one of your best reactions EVER! It's almost having to deal with James Caan getting his leg hobbled just to see your cheeks blow up and threaten to hurl in the closet. So you didn't say, last movie you had that much passion for was Close Encounters and that's way back in the beginning of your channel. Now with more movies under your cultural belt, which did you love more? Misery? Or Close Encounters?

Jason L

I use Ashleigh's reactions. If her reaction comes a little too slow, I pause her for a sec. If her reaction is too early, I pause the movie for a sec. Besides, it doesn't have to be exact, especially if you know the movie.

Edward, I know we could do math with the time codes but there are times with some Patreons where the 2 video speeds can slightly differ because of a technical fault. Checking visual beats where the shades of light change in the blurred video shot cuts helps keep track if there is a speed mismatch. I find it pretty easy just counting a beat or two in my head and timing the tracks exactly on the first try. πŸ™‚ Time code math calculating would be pretty annoying if there is a mismatch. And I usually drag my copy of the movie to stretch over and cover the blurred video, only seeing the Patreon's image. In any case... I greatly appreciate you trying to help me. Thank you. 😁

Those are totally unnecesary to re-sync. How to re-sync at any point in the movie with one expenditure of 20 seconds, re-usable throughout the entire film: 1) Note the time the studio logo appears in the source film. 2) Note the same time in the reaction video. 3) Subtract the smaller number from the larger number. This is the time difference. 4. Look at the time in the movie you are re-syncing at. 5) Add the time difference to that time. 6) Go to that exact time in the reaction video. Even if Ashleigh put the blurred image and a counter on her image (which I personally would hate; why do I want a big blurry rectangle on my screen?) you would have to spend an even longer amount of time trying to nudge it to the exact time, if you can figure out what the blur at that moment is. You already have a counter on every single video player in existence, including YouTube. I saw a reactor with a counter on the screen and they started the counter at a point that preceded the first second of my source video because their copy had different studio logos than mine, which is common with older movies. Hope that helps!

Another Princess Bride connection that I was unaware of until re-watching Misery tonight - William Goldman who wrote the book and screenplay for The Princess Bride was the screenwriter for Misery!

Lynnetta

omg. What a fantastic way to spend a Friday! Wine, Misery, and talking to video Ashleigh as if we were in the same room together! This was so much fun!!!

Lynnetta

Ashleigh, May I politely suggest a reduced in size, extremely blurred image (for copyright purposes) of the movie playing on the side as reference, in case for any reason we go out of sync? Like for instance, someone has to stop playback to take a break or... anything along those lines. At least a time counter on screen would assist in the watch-along. Thank you. I enjoy your reactions. 😁 P.S. I'm new here so, maybe someone already suggested this. Pardon me if so.

Mr. Writhms

The other Rob Reiner movie I know you watched is β€œThe Princess Bride” πŸ˜€

SMOKEY & THE BANDIT, and NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN! :p Ain't I a pest??? :p

Yup me too...wish a couple more spots would open up

Paul Johnson

Loved this movie and loved your reaction! If you want to see James Caan at his best check out "The Godfather"(1972) a straight up film masterpiece(and Godfather 2 is just a tiny notch below it...you can do without part 3 though it's crap)

Paul Johnson

This is the first watch along for me loved it! Really wish I knew how to get in on that MMM tier 😩

cainnum

Just watched. Fun!!! I am SO glad you liked it!

Terrel Geer

So, Ashleigh..... I gotta know.... How would you compare movies from the 70s and 80s with modern movies? I'd love to see you make a video that reflects on this question, and related stuff. You see, those of us who have lived with these movies for decades take them for granted. They're a part of the full fabric of movie history.... But someone like you --- who sees them only now... and so many in a concentrated period of time... That has to be a bizarre experience. So what do you think?

Thomas Monk

I'm so glad you reacted to this movie. I saw this in the movie theater way back when.

Thomas Monk

I can still feel the sledge hammer

Ricky P Kraus

Well that was intense...

Moni Castaneda

SO tempted to watch the edited youtube cut but I REALLY want to watch along. Forcing myself to wait until I get home from work tonight! Been wanting you to watch this since Hallobeans!!!

Terrel Geer

I like the movie but to me not a horror. A horror is like dead silence or insidious. But misery is a good movie. The thought of a nut living like a normal person in your community is kind of scary.

Dawn

I saw this movie when it first came out. I shattered one of my ankles/legs a couple years ago and still need a cane to walk. Rewatching that scene all these years later with that now having happened did add to the sympathy in that moment.

Kenton Kruger

Thanks!

Thomas Monk

For re-sync purposes, Ashleigh's video is 2 minutes and 15 seconds ahead. Whatever time it is in the movie, add 2:15 and go to that spot in Ashleigh's video.

Edward Olson

I'll challenge you for that title.😁

Bill Bevins

Kathy Bates deservingly won an Oscar for that role

Bleedingreen

You rock.

Brandon Portell

I usually watch the Watch Along version with you first, and then the next day I'll watch your YouTube reaction. But today I just had to see how you would react to this gem and you DID NOT DISAPPOINT! I can't wait to see your unedited ankle-hobbling reaction in the watch along this evening. I'm your #1 fan! πŸ˜‰

Thomas Ivie

This film i cannot watch, I have two broken ankles from long time ago Chronic weakness, not a sledgehammer .. but that scene HURTS me i feel the pain

Eric Greenwood

I have Dish Network and a year ago Flix had a free weekend and played Misery so I recorded to my DVR. Glad I haven't watched it yet. Will watch later when i can watch uninterrupted. I watch the movie on my TV and have Ashleigh on my Android tablet. Works out well. I also have It's a Mad, Mad World recorded so that will be two movies in a row that I can watch along.
