Personally the most brutal part of this whole thing was a bit clearer in the novel: the fact that Klein trying to help by revealing the acting method is what pushes Old Neil over the edge. Old Neil was already past the age limit to try to advance to sequence 8, so even though he has probably digested the Mistery Pryer potion, he was stuck there. He thought that, if he'd been able to advance sooner, he could have saved his wife. That's why this episode is the breaking point for him. The fact that Klein was able to advance in just two months, with such a simple concept (which he said was based off Neil's lessons). Meanwhile he has been stuck in sequence 9 for decades. That's the point where he breaks and starts quickly deteriorating, to the point of even forgetting about the planned party and just trying the ritual the same day. Beyonders losing control can be a gradual process taking months, but it can also happen in an instant for many different reasons. Neil had probably been hearing murmurings from the Hidden Sage for years, but he'd always ignored it, only starting to listen to them recently. In episode 5, you actually even see him buying one of the ingredients for alchemical life. He hadn't gone insane at that point but he had already started to mentally deteriorate. PS: the amulet Klein saw in the end was the fake amulet that appeared in ep 5 that had "Emperor Roselle's mysterious language" (Chinese), so it definitely had some sort of strange power (it actually just said "idiot"). Klein looked at it but obviously didn't buy it. Old Neil saw that and bought it as a present for him, but he never got to give it to him. PS2: the coughing is probably because he'd been taking out his own blood so he was feeling weak.
