Mayuri is emotional intelligent character that knows how to read Okabe. She knows that Okabe is suffering for Mayuri, but she doesn’t know why. That’s why she says “let me know if I’m a burden” as a way to ease Okabe’s suffering. You can’t really choose one over the other to be honest and that’s what makes it so tragic. Mayuri is Okabe’s precious childhood friend and the whole mad scientist gimmick was for Mayuri to cheer up when she was depressed. Their bond is the most significant to who Okabe is as a character. But then you also have Makise who has had chemistry with Okabe and helped him all the way up till now. When Okabe was desperate and in despair with all the of Mayuri’s deaths, Makise was the only one to actually pull him out of his helplessness.
