Oh, I finally got it myself, Momo was saying that when the water exploded back at the hot springs it was a warning that the volcano was going to erupt, which had been passed down from people before, but got twisted into the snake legend. So, if I'm understanding right, the volcano would have erupted anyway and the event at the hot spring was an indicator of that.
