Tsukimonogatari Episode 3 Reaction

Can't wait to meet the new character!!!

Comments

Tsukimonogatari is one of those arcs that I keep rewatching over the years, and even with the added context of what happens later in the story, I still feel like I haven't pieced it all together. It's probably the most difficult arc to analyze, right after Koyomimonogatari. The whole plot in this arc feels off. Some of Araragi's internal monologue tells us that he feels it's all artificial, contrived. The environments are also very abstract and weird, even more so than usual. We're back to Araragi narrating the story, so the reliability of what we see and what he tells us is very low, and clouded with the meta-layer of narration, which would be distracting to get into on your first watch. Pretty ironic that the con-man's narration was more reliable and trustworthy. The way Araragi just tells Kagenui what she wants to hear reminds me of Nadeko and how she handles most of the conflict in her life. It's also interesting that Kagenui calls Araragi out on trying to make this situation about himself instead of just accepting that technically he's just a victim here. Araragi's reaction, as you both noticed, feels off. He's unusually calm about his sisters being kidnapped. I think this shows us how apathetic Araragi has begun to feel at this point. His immediate acceptance to being unable to reverse the vampire transformation surprises even Kagenui. And the way he tries to convince himself that this whole kidnapping situation is actually "divine retribution". We immediately get reminded of Araragi's mindset. The constant need to repay debts, to atone, to make amends, to compensate for his mistakes. I think he almost feels relieved that this is happening. Like he finally got what was coming to him. On another note, I love the score in this arc, and the atmosphere it creates. Right from the opening monologue, there's this feeling of finality. Also, the direction and animation is captivating.

Spoilers Why mention the ending of episode 12? That's a spoiler in of itself, normally people don't expect something huge to happen there after a whole mini-season of short less-plot-relevant episodes. I really think it'd be best to edit put that part of your comment, just mention some people think ot leads better into owari season 2.

Another wonderful detail of visual story telling in this episode: Araragi stands on a scissors crossing, quite literally a fork in the (rail)road. One track leads towards Kagenui (conflict), the other towards Ononoki (abnegation of his vampiric powers). And regardless of his choice, Shinobu stands right by his side. Again, quite literally.

Russell's teapot

What to watch after Tsukimonogatari is the final point of contention between fans of the series right now regarding watch order. Koyomimonogatati is what would be watched next if you follow the light novel order, while Owarimonogatari season 1 would be next if you followed the anime order. I’m not going to advocate for any particular order, but to give some spoiler free context, those who advocate for the anime order do so because episode 12 of Koyomimonogatari ends with a cliffhanger/ plot twist/ plot turn that directly leads to Owarimonogatari season 2. If you follow the anime order, then that is what you watch next but if not, you would need to wait and watch Owarimonogatari season 1 first before seeing any resolution. On the other hand watching in the light novel order, kind of like with watching Hanamonogatari in its proper place, give a little bit better thematic progression to the story. Again, I’m not going to advocate for what order you do, but whether you choose yourselves or via poll the next entry, I thought I’d give some context

After Tsukimonogatari, the next one based on the novel order should be Koyomimonogatari and there is one small detail about it. The episodes in this one are about half of normal length. I personally think it would be the best to just do two episodes in one upload, but still, do it the way you personally feel is better, more comfortable for you guys.
