I fully understand that there's a cultural difference, i'm looking at it through my pov tho, as to me and in my culture that would be unacceptable. I am not saying i'm measuring the situation with the "correct" ruler, i am measuring it with "my" ruler.

I hope you still appreciate the hidden calculated writing behind the "cheating" tho even if you personally find it distasteful. Like everyone had mentioned in the comment section, like why ononoki kissed him, why he kissed shinobu. Personal fav line was shinobu saying "Who do you think you are, a casanova ?" after getting kissed. Just the combination of her SSR gacha rare embarassed look combined with that line was hilarious. Tho I prefer they used "italian man" in the translation instead of "casanova" just like the way she says it verbally. I had to search up what casanova meant lmao.

2025-06-30 11:37:51 +0000 UTCNesa has to change her views imo, it's like one of those meter sticks that's 5 inches too short, not a valid nor reasonable way of measuring other people and other cultures.

2025-06-30 02:12:56 +0000 UTCFun fact: Maya Sakamoto, Shinobu's VA, is also a professional musician and has a very personal philosophy against singing music that doesnt come directly from herself. This is probably the major reason why Shinobu doesnt sing her own OPs. That said, I LOVE the Shinobu OPs because they are immensely somber and powerful. I agree with Chillih, it really does feel ancient and mystical. As for the kissing scene(s), the way I see it it's just classic Nisio Isin toying with how weird he can make a scene while still remaining well-written. Others have already covered the nuances pretty well, so I don't think I have much more to add. At the end of the day, in a way you could consider all three of these girls as being "inside of his head." Even so it's still valid to give him side-eyes for even thinking up such scenarios in the first place, can't say it doesnt catch your attention XD Also its kinda hard to keep up, but Nekomonogatari Shiro actual takes place AFTER the time-travel arc and before Nadeko freakout arc, so Araragi hasn't come to terms with Hanekawa's true self. Through the series he has definitely looked up to her and considered her a genius, but it's really only during when he saves her that he acknowledges her imperfections.

2025-06-29 22:19:22 +0000 UTCYeah, I can definitely understand why you would view that Shinobu scene as cheating. From a "real life perspective" I would definitely agree with you that him kissing another girl, even if it is just a means to an end (to get her to talk with him about the darkness) is cheating. However, Shinobu and Araragi are by no means normal humans. They are basically two halfs of one whole at this point and will inevitably outlive everyone else. The two of them are soul-mates in the sense that they have a connection that trancends any human realtionship-ideal like "friendship" or "romantic-love". I'm pretty sure that Senjougahara is aware of their special connection and is more or less "okay" with things such as this as long as it does not get "too serious" like them actually sleeping together or starting a romantic relationship behind Senjogahara's back. In my opinion it's definitely a questionable and morally wrong action by Araragi but again it makes sense if you think about their relationships and he also did it without any romantic feelings in mind.

2025-06-29 21:20:31 +0000 UTCI don't think the kissing is your standard cheeky-perv Araragi thing, fwiw. Ononoki obviously ambushes him, but Shinobu didn't seem jealous of the kiss specifically - she's annoyed that he was interacting so casually with the girl that's been disrespecting her since their fight during Nise. The text cards that pop up right before the Shinobu kiss indicate that Araragi wants info about the 'darkness' ASAP. I took it as him trying to get her past the Ononoki thing to get to the real topic as quickly as he could. There's no blushing or gags from Araragi afterward, even - he's just like 'Now listen to me'.

2025-06-29 18:46:08 +0000 UTCJust to put this in context, this arc happens right after the time travel arc, which means that Araragi and Shinobu's relationship at this point is at its peak, remember that in Kizu and Bake they were at their lowest point. Part of the reason why Ononoki kissed Araragi was first to make Shinobu angry since they have beef, (the whole time before the kiss Ononoki is constantly stepping on Araragi's shadow). And second, to wake Shinobu up. Also, remember that they are ghosts/oddities, they don’t really exist. A kiss between them doesn’t mean anything beyond what it could represents in the context of oddities. Don’t miss the whole point: if Araragi can see them, it’s because something is going on with him. If the kiss had been with Hanekawa or Kanbaru, then it would’ve been a real problem.

2025-06-29 18:26:55 +0000 UTCSpecifically the skirt in bake was just to test her reaction. Since she was so protective of her bangs, she wouldn't let him touch her head, so he tried to see how she would react to him lifting her skirt. As seen, she didn't react at all to him lifting her skirt. So that informed him, that she for some reason is much more protective of her hair than anything else, at least her clothes.

2025-06-29 18:20:55 +0000 UTCRegarding the "cheating".. This is going to be a rough conversation regarding cultural norms, but to start out, do you remember when Senjougahara was talking to Araragi in Nise and she said "I'm rather tolerant of adultery but if it gets even the slightest bit serious I'll kill you. And her." The idea that this stuff is cheating in Japan is kind of... different, than how I think most of the rest of the world views it. I want to make that clear that I don't agree with it, but there's a lot of people in Japan, especially women, who tend to look the other way when it comes to things like sexual acts... Things like prostitution (for example) aren't always considered cheating if it's "just sex." because there's no intimate nature or serious feelings involved... It's odd but it's legitimately a widely-accepted take in the culture... If you just interview random people in Tokyo for example (Check out "Takashi from Japan" on YT for an English-friendly Japanese street interviewer) there's a lot of women who will openly admit that they don't view it as cheating. I preface with that because I don't think that either of the kisses in this episode were exactly intimate or serious. On different ends they were out of no where and kind of odd. Ononoki... well she'll mention it later.. but Araragi's motivation was to get back at Shinobu for teasing him or trying to make him feel sorry. She was specifically complaining that every time that she is getting involved with something he cuts all the fun and joking that he does and made her feel left out... Which he then turns back onto her by doing what she was complaining about to her... Morally ambiguous for sure but also somewhat inline with cultural ideals. I love Senjou but I do think that Shinobu has a deeper and more devoted connection to Araragi than she does (and vice versa). Ultimately at this point, it will be just Shinobu and Araragi in the end - he'll outlive everyone as a vampire and it'll just be the two of them. Also, a fun joke that the subs localized: After Ononoki kisses him he says - phonetically - "na ni nu ne no?" - nani means "what?" and the full thing can somewhat be likened to "What's next?!" but "na ni nu ne no" is also a portion of the Japanese alphabet.. If you listen to the Japanese alphabet those are all of the "n"-vowel associated characters, and Ononoki follows up with "ra ri ru re ro" which is all of the "r"-vowel associated characters: なにぬねの? らりるれろ. rero is also the onomatopoeia (sound effect phrase) used for licking in Japan.. kind of a play on the kiss.

2025-06-29 17:42:28 +0000 UTCThe way he's with Hachikuji, he's somewhat like that as well for Nadeko. He lifted her skirt up in Bakemonogatari and barely stopped himself from going further. Shinobu punched him later in the white snake arc since he wanted to sleep in the same bed with Nadeko. Araragi's tastes are...yeah.
