My assumption with Nu and Marco is that Nu used to be a happy noble betrothed to Marco, but when she manifested signs of the curse she was abandoned and cast out, by Marco as well. But that's just a guess, I don't actually know.

They are not the government's dark knights, which are a part of the Crimson Order that is lead by Alexia's sister, Iris. I think you might have confused these two organizations.
