Monogatari Episode 5 Reaction

Finally Hanekawa embraces herself, truly..

Comments

I agree, it's so fascinating that despite Araragi's coping mechanism (Pre-Kizu) - essentially rejecting everyone and everything - and Hanekawa's coping mechanism - accepting everyone and everything - being on opposite ends of the spectrum, they achieve the same result; they easily allow them to avoid forming and dealing with powerful, negative emotions associated with meaningful attachments/relationships.

Don't skip op or ed anymore😭The lyrics and the story are closely connected. It may helps you understand characters more. Watch openings and endings for better viewing experience.

Just the little bit of details in the writing awes me. Her inner monologue when araragi appeared "Oh tsukihi had the right idea after all", referencing to their talk in the previous episode in regards to how the sisters view "fire" and "flame", where tsukihi mentioned that she views fire as feelings of love. And now hanekawa is hurting from the burns all over her body, but the burning sensation in her heart as she saw araragi was stronger than that. Ahhhhhhhhh bro the only thing burning here is nisio isin's pen when he wrote this masterpiece. And there goes hanekawa's arc. My only complaint with her is that I feel like they rushed her development. Bakemonogatari last few eps, kizumonogatari, nekomonogatari:kuro, and now nekomonogatari:shiro. I hope this doesn't come out as a spoiler but... honestly these back to back arcs focusing on her made her overshadowed in the long run.

Hanekawa confessing and getting rejected are both just part of the ritual for her to come to terms with her feelings. Obviously she knew Araragi has Senjo and she knew he was going to reject her, the important point is giving her proper closure. That's why Araragi was graceful in his response as well. It's a performance both had to take part in.

Btw, this is kind of confirmed in the audio commentary, the reason Araragi looks so cool when he shows up is because we're seeing him from Hanekawa's perspective.

An interesting thing to think back on now, is Araragi's statement about friends as a weakness when he first meets Hanekawa. He says relationships make him weak. And that if they felt joy, he'd feel only envy. It was played off lightly before, but we can see now how much Hanekawa and Araragi mirror each other. Even with the licking the desk vs scent marking his bed. And just like a toxic relationship, two people with similarly harmful behaviors can be the worst combo. Whereas Araragi's and Senjo's flaws complement each other more (in my opinion).

Thanks for a double episode to wrap up this amazing arc! You guys are awesome. I had a feeling Nesa would cry on this episode since she seemed to empathize with Hanekawa so strongly earlier in the series XD

Oshino did imply that she was dangerous and that he had to make special considerations when it came to her back in Bake after all. He knew all along how complicated her emotional trauma was. Hanekawa's story is a brilliant lesson on the potential consequences of repressing your feelings and wearing a mask for too long. Bottling up your emotions and pretending you don't have them only leads to them growing until they explode. As Oshino might say, there is always a balance. Sometimes it is good to hold your tongue and set aside your feelings, but Hanekawa's flaw was that she relied on that concept TOO much and tried to present herself as the perfect righteous girl who had no flaws, who made no mistakes. As a result her darkness caught up with and consumed her, and her growth that happens after one makes mistakes was stunted, until she finally learned to accept herself. That feeling sad, jealous, spiteful, ignorant...they're all perfectly part of being human and don't make us any less of a person. The good emotions are just as important as the bad ones. Making mistakes and accepting them is important too, because by running away you aren't learning anything. Trauma is terrible and can overwhelm you, but it also makes you stronger.
