Monogatari Episode 4 Reaction

Araragi's mom, Episode, Oshino's other colleague. So much is happening, so much to talk about...

I agree with Nesa. A person who cheats, basically isn't a person anymore. Human scum is more accurate. They basically don't exist as a human.

The "WOW" in unison after Araragi's mom's insightful words made me smile haha

Man araragi's mom words live rent free in my head sometimes. "A family isn't a must have by any means, but if you do have one, it should make you happy". Also I'm surprised you guys watched the ending. I joined the patreon late so Idk why you both decided to skip the opening, ending and the end credits, but if you do end up rewatching the series, do try watch the end credits, it's pretty fun !

Mizudori - "water/auspicious bird" Rousokuzawa - "candle+name ending sawa" Those in the know, know. I am denying any and all charges.

My abba taught me a few things too, like how to rip the skin off by using my own mouth

If you remember in Nise episode 11, Kagenui (miss good guy), said that she was in the occult research club with Kaiki and Meme. They used to play 4-person Shougi with an upper class man, their Senpai. She was literally Gaen is the maiden name of Kabarus mom. Shinobu on the ceiling was the one that mentioned her lineage. “Ignorance is bliss” is the common English phrase here. She’s basically saying that Hanekawa is adverting her eyes from reality. If she looked at it like normal, she would have been able to figure out how she feels and the reason for what’s going on with the Tiger would have been obvious.

It is. Unfortunately it’s only in the Blueray released in Japan, they didn’t add it in the US/International releases so they didn’t bother to sub it. That video was a fan passion project, and it was hilariously long and polite - typical of Japanese letter writing, but I loved that it was done. The letter is like 2 chapters long iirc.

"GG Go next" is such a great summary of this arc lmao.

All I took away from this episode is that their mom is a baddie

The wise scarecrow Gaen-senpai mentioned is a reference to the character from the Wizard of Oz, who notoriously didn't have a "brain" and joins the main character on her journey to meet the enigmatic and mysterious Wizard of Oz in hopes that he can grant them what they most desire. As for "heartburn" it stems from the japanese word for jealousy ("yakimochi") and the phrase she uses it in here "yakimochi wo yaku" which is often used to mean "burning with jealousy." Using the word heartburn to describe jealousy in English isnt really common where I'm from nowadays, but it might still be used in some places. Most people use it to describe the feeling of acid buildup in the stomach, but the wordplay does fit pretty well considering her circumstances. Cant really talk too much about Gaen-senpai yet, but yes she is an interesting foil to Hanekawa. Running into someone whose knowledge of the world is so much wider than yours can seem to you as if they know "everything" just as Hanekawa has appeared to Araragi and Senjougahara plenty of times. Gaen-senpai seems to be self-aware of this and plays into it.

One of my friends sent me a YouTube video of hanekawa’s full letter to black hanekawa, 40 mins long, that the voice actor reads. Guessing that it’s from LN
