Nisemonogatari Episode 2 Reaction

Finally meeting Karen! Kanbaru is doing some crazy things ....

Comments

I would most definitely not feel safe around Kanbaru just because she's into girls. What's stopping her from realizing that she's actually bi instead? Someone like her can flip at any time.

My friend is romantically attracted to only girls, but she reads a ton of BL (and GL as well), so honestly Kanbaru dosen't suprise me with that.

Kiss-Shot Acerola-Orion Heart-Under-Blade Exactly right, Nesa. I don't know if anyone pointed this out yet but: 刃 - yaiba - blade 心 - kokoro - heart 忍 - Shinobu - Kanji is literally heart radical under the blade radical. It's why Meme named her that.

月火 - Tsukihi - Kanji meanings are "moon" (月 - tsuki) and "fire"(火 - hi) 火憐 - Karen - Kanji meanings are "fire"(火 - ka) and "compassion/passion"(憐 - ren) Japanese Kanji have multiple different ways that they can be read depending on where they're located within a word, if it's a proper name, or a few other exceptions.. The fire Kanji specifically has like 4 different sounds it can make. PS This is common wordplay in Japanese and has some loose relevance later but tsuki from Tsukihi sounds VERY close to suki because tsu is typically said with a very light t sound... suki = 好き = like-love.

Oshi

Kanbaru is into BL. Despite claiming to be a lesbian, she does enjoy BL for her erotica. Apparently, this is a thing. I also tend to think of Kanbaru as more bisexual than a strict lesbian despite how she identifies in Bake. Sexuality is a spectrum so maybe Kanbaru is a 4 on the Kinsey Scale and identifies more as a lesbian but also isn’t strictly a lesbian.

Basically Araragi was teasing her by trying to make Kanbaru appear more "normal", by saying that being naked at home is perfectly normal, and that her BL books are actually just about conventionally attractive guys falling for each other, nothing that would actually be "weird". Kanbaru can't stand it because she builds part of her identity in being a bit weird and a pervert. Also, about the names, I don't know Japanese, but I know that both of the sisters' names have fire in them. Both "Ka" from Karen and "Hi" from Tsukihi mean fire in some way. Tsuki is indeed the moon as well, as you said. Symbolically, Tsukihi is often associated with the moon, while Karen is more related to the sun. Though explaining the thematic meaning of that would be a spoiler for now.
