I watched Monogatari in anime release order the first time, and yeah, it takes a while to get to Araragi’s backstory, you go through about 75 episodes before the movies, and then you have only around 39 after them. But honestly, the movies are a 12/10. I’ve watched thousands of animes, and I genuinely think human-made animation peaked with the Monogatari films. It kinda feels like a drop in quality when you watch most of the Monogatari seasons after the movies. Don’t get me wrong, Monogatari as a whole is still top-tier compared to other animes, but you definitely go from a 12/10 to a 10/10.

2025-11-08 02:44:06 +0000 UTCI am happy you watched this as intented / ligth novel release. As you probably can suspect, these movies took a ton of time, money, and effort. And so it was planned to be released much much sooner than it was. So the reason it is released so late in the animated show's order is simply due to budget. I also love that you see Araragi as the selfish, flawed person he is. He is a main character yes, but it still doesn't mean that everything he says or does is supposed to be ok. But the flawed characters is also why I adore this series so much. Also the outro soundtrack, Ettoile et toi, is gorgeous. I highly reccomend listening to it and reading the text. I believe it is sung from Shinobu's perspective - but that is just my perspective.

2025-05-05 12:27:09 +0000 UTCShinobu could starve herself, but, for one, it's an immensely awful way to go, but as well as that, Araragi wouldn't return to a human that way - as her kin, Araragi must kill Shinobu himself to return to humanity. In many ways, Araragi is holding Shinobu hostage, if she chooses to die, the person who she wishes to die for is cursed to be a pseudo vampire forever. Thus, she continues to live, hoping he'll eventually kill her and provide her with satisfaction. Meanwhile, Araragi continues to live, also prepared for her to kill him, with 'dying for someone else' being an equally satisfying conclusion for him. Araragi is insanely interesting, Monogatari really loves taking tropey characters like the perfect class prez or the protagonist who'd save anyone, then deconstruct them, showing the ways in which they're flawed. This story spares no effort in showing the ways in which an overwhelming hero complex can be incredibly selfish after all - there's so much more to his character to come.

2025-04-22 20:09:55 +0000 UTCDon't worry Chillih, you'll get more Araragi development. He's a tough character to analyze, because he doesn't like talking about himself. As you both probably noticed, he's narrating these stories, and the world and characters we see are heavily influenced by how he sees them, how he decides to talk about it all. Even the order in which he tells these stories is significant, that's why people are very "sensitive" about the watch order for this anime. Nesa said that she saw Araragi as a hero in Bakemonogatari. Well, that's how he portrayed himself. There are glimpses of his "true" mindset in there, but he immediately redirects your attention to all the other characters. That's also why Shinobu seemed like such an unimportant character. Araragi intentionally refused to talk about her, because, as you can now see, that story doesn't make him look too good. But after the ending of Bake, after the incident with Hanekawa, he decides it's time to tell the Kizu story. A bit of that facade falls off. Just some stuff to think about. I'm glad you're enjoying it so much :).

And now he feels guilty for being like that, for forcing Shinobu to exist in this state because of this mindset. He's still willing to let her kill him, I would even say he prefers that outcome. He would "take responsibility", and at the same time not have to make a difficult decision. That's how I see Araragi at this point in the story.

2025-04-14 23:05:05 +0000 UTCA lot of people don't like Nisemonogatari, but I honestly think it's amazing and iconic because of one scene... In short, not any inferior to other seasons.

2025-04-14 22:27:27 +0000 UTCI laughed out loud when Chillih was mimicking Araragi's laughter and was like bro I'm just like Araragi, i don't know how to cope (with imagining Hanekawa's face being eaten off) lmao. Also, I think Nesa mentioned how Shinobu is actively choosing to go along with this solution; that's a good observation that goes a long way in understanding Araragi and Shinobu's complex relationship. During the scene on the rooftop where they have that beautiful conversation, Kiss-Shot gives Araragi a look that is probably interpreted in a variety of ways in real time, but in hindsight it's clear it's a look with a mix of fondness and sadness associated with her planning to have him kill her so he can return to being human. Excited for Nisemonogatari!

2025-04-14 20:57:22 +0000 UTCShout out Hachikuji. She is indeed the boss. Also "nothing can surprise me anymore" is like the mantra of the show lmao. But concerning why Shinobu doesn't just kill Araragi or something, there's a lot to it. Some gets explored later. She's kind of self-deceptive a bit, but my read is that *initially* that's what she wanted, to die. But after meeting Araragi, what she really wants is to live with him, because life is now new and unexplored again, full of possibilities. She doesn't want to live without him though and continue that same old drudgery. It is a recurrent thing in the show though, so I'll leave it there. But as a general statement for a lot of characters in the series: Just because they say something doesn't mean they believe it. And if they do believe something, that doesn't mean they know it. And if they think they know it that doesn't mean its true. Something to keep in mind, especially as we head into the "Fake Story".
