In my opinion you don't need to get too caught up in the text screens, they add flavor but nothing critical to the scene or story. Worth reading afterward if you're interested, but you shouldn't feel obligated to pause your reaction to dig each one out. I went in the same way - I'd heard of it, but knew nothing other than it had kind of a weird style to it. I think a lot of the 'difficult to understand' rep comes from the fact that the author loves wordplay/puns that make sense in Japanese, but don't always translate that well in subs. Any confusion I had about the actual plot itself always clicked later once I got further into the story.
