2024-10-11 07:15:34 +0000 UTCThis is possibly my favorite episode of the season. Let me see if I can help you along without spoiling things. Let's start off with the two becoming one. Fengming was guilty of two things, although one was born of ignorance. She accidentally killed the baby (the former emperor's son) with honey. That death was blamed on the powder and Maomao's father, Loumen. However, to cover that up, she tried to kill Lady Lishu with poison. Trying to kill Lishu, who is a high ranking concubine from a powerful family, would result in Fengming's death. Fengming was more concerned with the hurt that she gave to Lady Ah-Duo when Fengming killed the baby. She desperately did not want Ah-Duo to find out. So Maomao convinced Fengming to admit to trying to kill Lishu. The story they went with was that by killing Lishu, Ah-Duo wouldn't have to leave the palace. That way Fengming could hide the death of Ah-Duo's child so that Ah-Duo wouldn't think less of Fengming. In the novel, Fengming actually hung herself after confessing at attempting to kill Lishu so that the baby's death would remain a secret. Now, for the swapping of the babies. Ah-Duo was the daughter of a nurse and was only given the concubine position because the prince at the time was really close to her (they were essentially raised together). When both Ah-Duo and the "empress dowager" were giving birth around the same time, the doctor was told to prioritize the empress dowager over Ah-Duo. She knew that should anything happen to her baby, the dowager's baby would get priority. So Ah-Duo swapped babies so that her son would have a better chance at living. There is more to it, but they might cover it in a second season, so I'm not going to say any more. Now that you have seen this episode, I'm going to say that I really love Ah-Duo's character even though she is barely shown. You might see more of her in upcoming seasons, but she will likely still be a minor role. My favorite character remains as Gyoukuyou, but I love so many in this show! So many great characters!
