Whether the customer was paying to have tea and conversation with a high ranking courtesan, or a sexual encounter with a low ranking one, it was a business transaction with all cards on the table. I think Maomao just isn't attuned to picking up subtle signals of romantic interest because there's no place for subtle signals in a brothel: you tell them what you want and you hand over the cash, right? Add to that the fact that Maomao has repeatedly said she doesn't count Jinshi as a man because he's "had his important bits cut off" and I think that Maomao just doesn't even imagine Jinshi might have romantic feelings at all. She did say in this episode that she couldn't think of a repayment Jinshi would like. That's because the company of a beautiful woman isn't something she thinks Jinshi would be interested in and that's all she had to trade with. She has imagined him in intimate situations before, although he's usually in the arms of another man, but generally dismisses the idea as just too silly. So, I don't think she's dense, I think her overexposure at the brothel to their version of "romance" has left her a bit desensitised and unable to read subtle cues of a romantic nature. That coupled with the fact she doesn't even think of Jinshi as a man, let alone a man with romantic feelings, means she's never even considered the possibility that Jinshi could have feelings for her. She notices him "sparkling" at her but she knows he's just trying to manipulate her when he does that. I think it will come as a shock when she finds out. She is also too wrapped up in her intellectual curiosities to be very interested in anything else I think, so she's not looking for any romantic interest directed her way anyway. It's probably going to have to be a very direct, impossible to misinterpret, declaration of love before Maomao even notices it. That was the way I was thinking when I first watched this episode. It's not based on anything you haven't seen for yourself, so it's just speculation. I'll never post a spoiler so don't worry about that. I'm really enjoying this series of reactions. You're both so interesting to watch and listen to.

As for the romance angle, I'm not going to mention that. Spoilers. The series is based on light novels, and in my opinion it was adapted very well. The 24 episodes cover the first two of the light novels. There are currently 15 in print, 11 of which have been officially translated to English. A second season has been confirmed. This aired at the same time as Frieren. Despite this, it was still a popular show even though Frieren was such a massive hit. So, they immediately announced a second season. Honestly that season of anime was so good, it has almost been a let down since then. I have another recommendation. You might be interested in My Happy Marriage. Obviously, it is romance heavy, but there is a mystery as well. Pretty well made. Sort of a mixture of historical (early industrial era) mixed with fantasy (a world that has magic) and lots of drama with romance.
