They didn't put the powder on the baby, they put it on themselves. The powder gets transferred to the baby as the mother is hugging it and playing with it. The baby was actually poisoned because the mother wanted to show it love. That adds an extra tragic layer to the story and it is also reflected in the actions of her ladies in waiting. The ladies in waiting genuinely do love Lihua, their mistress, and feeling hopeless at the sight of someone they love so clearly wasting away and heading toward death, they did they only things they knew had made her happy in the past. They put the poisonous powder on her face because Lihua had felt strong when she wore it, it gave her status and beauty... but probably most of all for the ladies in waiting, it disguised her sickly appearance. They wanted to give her the rich foods she loved probably for the same reasons: they made her happy in the past and giving them to her, even though she wouldn't eat them, was a way of denying the fact of her sickness. Not letting Maomao near her was probably a similar thing, too: they didn't want to be confronted with the truth that their beloved mistress was dying while they were unable to do anything to help her. I don't believe there was any malice from the ladies in waiting, just ignorance and psychological stresses they didn't understand. To be ignorant is a real sin, eh?

There's a recurring theme involving poisons and it's in an historical setting with some political intrigue and even a little bit of romance sprinkled in but, at its heart, it's really a detective series in my eyes. btw, I love that you said, "somnambulism". It's always good to be expanding your vocabulary. Even better if it's in a second language. Don't let people put you off. You're very intelligent and it's ok to let that show. You do you and be proud.

The technique Maomao taught Lady Lihu .....a boob job would be a less vulgar term than the traditional name for it. It really is crazy that this show and Frieren came out at the same time. They might just be the 2 best animes ever. With season 2 of Dangers in my Heart also airing then, we were truly blessed.

2024-09-15 12:40:14 +0000 UTCThis was the episode that elevated Maomao to one of my favorite characters. Lihua's ladies in waiting are appointed to her by her family. Since Lihua is one of the high rank concubines, her family is very important. So, the punishments would be lenient if there was no actual proof that this was done to harm Lihua. One of the things that is mentioned in the light novels, but not really mentioned in the anime, is that Gyokuyou's family is also important. However, after the poisoning attempts on her when she was pregnant, she reduced her staff to people she knows are loyal. That's why she has so few ladies in waiting and they are doing all of the work that typical servants would normally do.
