i don't think thors was naive or dumb, he just didn't have much of a choice so he tried the duel thing as a hail mary as he had nothing to lose anyway. he could've cut off askeladd's head of course, but then the archers would have immediately fired and killed all of them. if anything, he changed the outcome from them all being dead to a single casualty, which is realistically the best he could have hoped for.
