Very cool, Paul, very cool. Took me a bit of playing to get my head round it, but it works really well... nice work :)

I was inspired by your process to automate this with Geometry Nodes!

Videos like this really help me see object creation from a whole new perspective. What took you a few minutes to make would have taken me a full day of frustration. Incredible!

I recently discovered some problems with my shading after doing the whole size -1 to flip an object, so I think you’ll have to flip the normals after doing the size flip. I don’t really know how all that works, but it kinda just fixes everything later on

no wait I found your video on that, thanks, to narrow the focus in my composition really brougth them to live

Hi, I wondered if you could tell me about your philosophy on composition. I find it especially hard to find a good composition, when the camera moves and the perspective shifts.
btw love your work, honestly best cgi I ever saw,- greetings from my desktop

This is a superb modelling hack. I've encountered it before but not with such a dazzling demonstration of how much faster it is!

Hey Ian
Loved your video
I just wanted to share my workflow for fences. I save a bit of time with a very simple geometry nodes setup (its only 4 nodes!) where I don't have to do a bunch of manual edge splitting. I just set up the mesh and plug this in.

I would say its often less fidley to do it manually and at least for me it ends up being faster if i just do it instead of spending longer trying to do something procedurally

He often does things the manual way, and I think it might be because it supports his intuitive modeling style. He's not bound by the restrictions of mirrors and arrays; he can make it any shape at any time, adjusting individual steps, rotating random parts, and so on.
I often model like you do, as procedurally as possible. But I've really come to appreciate this approach after watching a lot of Ian.

Because he can do it faster without it.

Love the video! I am a bit curious why you dont use the array modifier for stairs? It seems like that and the mirror mod gets around a lot of the acrobatic selecting used in this video. 1000 ways to skin a cat but always curious to hear your preference and thoughts. Thanks!

I don't know if Blender Modelling Shortcut Poetry is a recognized genre yet, but this convinces me it should be. BMSP is the new ASMR.
