Rebooting Development

Development has hit a bit of a snag, with updates trickling to a crawl. There are multiple reasons behind this, but the fundamental reason has been the lack of direction. This project started as an ENF/exhibitionism sandbox, but those are very open-ended themes that rely heavily on context.

I have also focused solely on the game mechanics over the course of development, believing that to be the only elements that make up a game; I was wrong. I held off on writing a story because I wanted players to create their own stories in-game. It's nice to strive towards, but the reality is more complex, and it can be accomplished while also having a story.

Roshutsu has a lot of systems and mechanics, but they're not used for anything. A story gives you reason to use said mechanics. Utilizing all the assets and features the game has at the moment, I created the outline of a short story:

This represents a shift of development into a different direction. Rather than make one humongous game that does everything, I want to instead release shorter, complete games, and build upon each other. I have seen a few other indie developers do this and it seems the best approach, especially considering how small indie budgets like mine are.

Unfortunately this lesson came to me far too late. I neglected Roshutsu for far too long, leading it into decline. Coupled with several costly medical expenses the past few months have put my finances in critical condition. I've run out of time and need to refocus my time and effort into searching for stable income.

Having my attention focused elsewhere might also give me time to step and think more carefully what to do. It's already given me the idea for the script. It would also give me additional money to spend on extra things, something that I've been unable to do so for a while.

Regardless of that, I see this as a reboot of development. Games are much more than their programming, and that's been a painful lesson for me this whole while. But writing the story has reignited my passion for this project and breathed new life to Roshutsu. I'm sorry it's taken me this long to realize, but thank you very much for supporting me during this tough time!

Hi, Bare! I love your work so much! I'm a fan of exhibitionism :3 Excuse me, about Roshutsu, what's the difference between the free version and the Patreon version?

Eternal HMV

It was a poorly timed post for an attempt at rebooting a dying project. I have the outline for a more narrative Roshutsu, but I will be putting Roshutsu on hold. I have something else in the works, but I will have more to say in an upcoming post.

was this post an April fools prank?

So... could we possibly get a post just detailing where your mind currently is with the game?

I already love this game. I also love the approach of getting the mechanics ready before working on a story. Many professional games do it the other way round and remain in a state where the bugs kill the joy. Your plans sound really promising. Looking forward to the stories you will come up with.

Are we getting a May Update soon?

This all sounds amazing. I look forward to seeing more soon!

i love your game looks great are you going to add toys at some point

i cancelled my pledge because i myself am running out of money, but i promise the next time the game gets an update, i'll try to throw some more dollars your way

Real life issues should always come first. I'm glad your passion for the project has been reignited but anyone reasonable can wait until your personal life is at a more stable point before development continues. Wishing you the best.

I'm glad you're taking a step back and recognizing all the troubles and issues you've been tackling with, both in developing and in the real-world. Please don't ever feel discouraged making these kinds of decisions, some people won't be able to see the good things these choices are making and you should not let those who have no idea what you're dealing with or have no expertise sabotage your work. I hope things onward is an enjoyable and worthwhile experience for you.

Get your health and finances under control first, everything else can follow after that.

This is a lesson most of us learn the hard way. It’s a milestone to be proud of because some of us never learn it. Looking forward to what comes next!
