Episode #809: Jaws (W❤️M)

So many amazing unsung editors of the 70s

Natalie

Random trivia - they avoided using the shark not so much because it looked bad but because it malfunctioned *constantly*. The FX guy who built it was super experienced at underwater electronics, but for freshwater, not saltwater. It’s a good thing they figured it out because otherwise we probably would have had Jaws shot on a soundstage/water tank, booooooo

Natalie

My roller derby name is Jaws of Death #75 and although I technically named myself that after a medical malady (osteoradionecrosis of the mandible!) it is one of my top 3 favorite films! I love all the anniversary celebrations and commemorative gear out this year! This was a great listen! 😊❤️🛼🦈

Molly Pitzer

So thrilled that you guys did this one! JAWS is a family favorite and has dubbed every 4th of July as Jaws Day 🦈 I do have a bit of anecdotal trivia from a dvd extra I saw 100 years ago. They changed Hooper surviving in the movie because their underwater photography team got footage of a real great white actually getting tangled up in the shark cage like you see in the movie, but the cage was empty. The footage was so good that they adjusted the story so that Hooper gets away before things go topside

Rylee Jeffers

Great Dreyfus impressions throughout 💯

Arthur Cunningham

Can we please, please get a ‘Close Encounters’ episode? I need more Dreyfuss impressions. Now.

Andrew Miller

Watched Jaws for the first time in decades after listening to this episode. Still such a great movie. I'm going to work through the sequels on prime video too. Second I kinda remember, 3 I don't think I've ever watched (your episode on it is my whole understanding of the movie) and revenge i remember the shark being killed by a boat but not much else lol

Kureigu

Man, that ET bit had me crying Also, A+ Dreyfuss impressions

Robert

One of my new favorite episodes based on one of my favorite movies! The music references were killing me! Hope you guys had a great 4th!

Robert Calvillo

I feel like I didn’t hear a shoutout for editor Verna Fields but feel like the guys would dig her! https://thedailyjaws.com/blog/2021/11/30/remembering-verna-fields-the-genius-editor-behind-jaws

Jesse Bacon

Maybe I just got my shipper goggles on, but I got the vibe Ellen Brody and Matt Hooper were trying to convince Chief Brody for a threesome. It was the 70s, everyone was horny and inebriated, it checks out to me haha. Anyway great episode guys, your Richard Dreyfuss impression cracks me up.

Lar

This movie has a personal connection with me since i saw it several times with my late brother David. Im going to out myself as a a WHM grampie. I saw this as a boy in a theater in Chicago heights, IL. The movie was so huge people had to line up around the block for tickets to advanced screenings. When we did get in the theater had been oversold and they brought in benches from the lobby and people were standing.

Peter Reynoso

Oh no, now i have to watch jaws again

Will H.

I just ordered Jaws on BluRay after this episode. What a fantastic film

I'd Rather Have No Name

From everything I’ve heard about Dreyfuss, shouldn’t he be THANKING us for Trump? (I didn’t vote for him either obviously and I second that ‘fuck you’).

Kate

Yes! I thought I was the only who remembered this show. I even had the action figures.

Kate

Fantastic episode and a real treat for Jaws 50. I know Eric was just kidding but sharks DO occasionally cause internet outages by biting submarine cables lol

Trev Herron

Ok the talk about the puppet made me think some one should make a movie about people trying to make a Jaws like movie using a robot puppet shark but they use AI train the robot. It then thinks it's a real shark and kills everyone. Somebody please make this happen.

Jon Wika

Also. These impressions are SENDING ME

Laura Coleman

No one mentions Roy scheider in SeaQuest DSV.

Matthew Lloyd

To answer the question of if the kids like this: I have a 13 year old and we’ve probably watched it about 7 times since she was 6. Saw it in theaters and she loved it

Zach Hughes

Necropsy.

Sh'boom Sh'boom

Alao, Blue Thunder is pretty good with a plot that is very relevant today. It'd make a fun episode.

Kemper

About 6 or 7 years ago, Richard Dreyfuss was doing a Q&A before a showing of Jaws at a local college. My wife and I thought it would be fun. Dreyfuss rambled for over an hour, and he was an unhinged maniac. At a couple of points he was screaming at the audience that Trump was all our fault. (Fuck you, Richard. I didn't vote for him.) It was awful, and we left while he was still just going on and on so didn't even watch the movie. We weren't the only ones getting up. And he must have been desperate for cash because there was a shit ton of signed memorabilia for sale in the lobby.

Kemper

This is the only movie that has actually scared me. I still have fast forward through the opening scene. I still like Halloween more than this one. But this is still in my top 10.

Christopher Oxentine

When I opened up my Patreon and saw this episode, my entire summer was made. Jaws is my favorite movie in the entire universe. I’ve seen it SO many times in and out of the theater. I actually saw it at the drive in with my parents when I was 5, and instead of being afraid, I was in love. I just celebrated my 52nd bday (yikes) on July 1st, and my husband and kids threw me a Jaws themed bday lunch, complete with a cake covered in body parts and a giant shark. 😂 Anyway, you guys rock and thank you for the amazing episode! ❤️

Melissa Benjamin

I think Fernando Rey is #2 on The French Connection!

Felipe Sobreiro

Quint was soooo hot as the blonde blue eyed beast in The Battle of the Bulge , 1965. Look what 10 yrs of heavy drinking and smoking can do to you

Catboyslim

Former Boy Scout - can confirm, there are tons of aquatic merit badges, including: swimming, life saving, rowing, canoeing, motor boating, and if you can believe it, underwater basket weaving. All of them fun, all earned in the freezing oceanic waters of north Puget Sound

TDB

Loved the shout out at the bird's eye view of the Shark taking down Pond Pervert. The framing of the shark yanking him into the drink he's been burned into my brain since I was a kid.

Gino Volpe

This is stretching my memory, but I believe there was an episode where Eric created a hypothetical where someone would crank it (jerk it) along to the rhythm of the Jaws theme. I still smile thinking of that

RJ Cunningham

And as someone from New England, as a kid I always thought “why is everyone at the beach so fucking ugly.” Admittedly pretty familiar looking though but my oh my, ugly branches littered all over that beach The image of the old man with the those nice low hanging chariots that talks to Brody at one point is seared into my head

RJ Cunningham

Also the first second Dreyfuss is on screen I’m reminded “man I really hate this fucking guy,” and I hate his character….but he’s fantastic in the movie . He’s really fucking good, I find him better here than any other performance he’s had. Might be because Quint is there to highlight “ya this guy is a stuck up piece of shit” and the movie knows it, which is the only way I can consume Dreyfuss, if I’m not the only one completely turned off by the guy. I kinda hate Close Encounters because too much fucking Dreyfuss

RJ Cunningham

People would compare a performance like Ledger’s the Joker to the shark in Jaws, this figure in the movie that defines every scene and everyone’s waiting to pop back up again. That’s Quint. Robert Shaw is all-time in this movie, top 10 character/performance ever and that’s a safe number. This viewing (maybe my literal 40th time), Quint is pure gravity. Every line of his dialogue is fucking insane and perfect.

RJ Cunningham

Recently saw an old interview with Jeff Daniel's and he was talking about that face he made in Speed you know the "Mother" face. He said he couldn't get it so they broke for lunch and he remembered a conversation he had with Roy Scheider about his reaction in Jaws. He told him all he did was made sure his cheeks were up a little at the beginning of the take and then dropped them. Cool little WHMism crossover.

Bible Black

One of my favorite videos on the internet is this home movie of Steven Spielberg with his friends reacting to the Academy Award nominations for Jaws. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2mgrxvTdl-Q&pp=ygUgc3RldmVuIHNwaWVsYmVyZyBqYXdzIG5vbWluYXRpb27SBwkJwQkBhyohjO8%3D

James

And the OG singing voice of Simba

Sara Syd

Fun fact! “John Williams Jnr” AKA Joseph Williams may well have written the score as he’s also a musician and was the lead singer of Toto (yes Toto of “Africa” fame)

Craig

Regarding the score: I can't think of any other music in cinema that is a movie quote in itself. Of all the quotes from this movie, I'd say more people have said "DUUUU-DUH" than have quoted "you're gonna need a bigger boat". I guess that's how I would quantify just how iconic Williams' score is.

Oh! That Guy.

Loving the Dreyfuss impressions. Got just a hint of GALLAGHER in it, which is maybe my favourite impression you boys do

Steven Avalos

There is a prequel book - "The Book of Quint", accepted as canon by the Benchley estate. The author, Ryan Dacko suggested on his podcast that the arm injury Quint sustained arm wrestling is the reason he lost his grip and slid to his death.

Doug Dee

My mom saw it when it was originally released, and she squeezed her soda all over everyone when that head came out of the boat!

Jaime Lee Ezell

I showed this to my 11 year old, I love this movie so much I named him after Chief Brody (his middle name), and he was enraptured!!!

Jaime Lee Ezell

Omg, “Holiday roooaAAaAst” gave me my first belly laugh in a long time. You guys can always get a chuckle out of me, so I save your episodes for when I need them most. Thanks for what you do!

Amber Schumacher

Re: Andrew's comments about the movie Cruel Jaws - A total seeing is believing situation. It's AWFUL but hilarious, especially when you hear the movie's theme which is about 80% stolen from the Star Wars theme. It's WILD.

Busiris

Not Salacious B Crumb!

Laura Coleman

Ice cream

Laura Coleman

The Gorillaz too?! 🤣 How are you all this way after all these years? Such beautiful nonsense.

Clever Girl

Me and my mom still quote Dennis Weaver in "Duel" 😂 Love that movie

Clever Girl

Lol

Clever Girl

"Fell in love with a girl" cover was incredible. 10/10

Clever Girl

Big debate my partner and I have every July when we watch this: at the hospital, is Michael saying he wants coffee or coffee flavored ice cream?!

Derek Baxter

"Whoever is humming the Jaws theme is about to sleep with fishes"—Washington crossing the Delaware.

Eren Keskin

Blue Thunder rules!

chris pike

Were gonna need a bigger podcast

Mike Kling

Jaws 2 deaths were pretty stellar too.

Tala Hobballah

I believe Ryan Coogler even has a Jaws homage in Sinners. If i'm not mistaken, Robert Shaw's contract was the same as when Michael B. Jordan hired Delroy Lindo for the juke joint.

Rob DiLauro

I think the book also clumsily indicates that Ellen and Hooper briefly went to college together and hooked up there. It's kind of a lazy "of all the gin joints in the world" bit that probably should have been squeaked out of the book's first draft. Great WLM.

MarkNM

Speaking of the run time, as a youngerman used to sometimes skip my DVD to the boys setting out.

David Thompson

I didn’t know how badly I needed Indie Sleaze Quint in my life

Liam Carroll

Haven't heard the podcast yet, but I hope he's not conflicting that with Popeye Doyle, Gene Hackman's character's name.

Troy Conner

Something tells me Senor Spielbergo more closely identifies with the rich and powerful than with the working class people who suffer the consequences. He also seems to hate lawyers, funny that.

Comrade Trash Panda

I don't know who Steve was actually thinking about, but Peter Boyle isn't in The French Connection is he?

Adam Shreve

Forever bitter Spielberg didn't kill the mayor. And then letting the villain of Jurassic Park live. Sir.

Tala Hobballah

Ladies and gentlemen, WLM has delivered a perfect episode! Thanks to the entirety of Jaws and it's score, I now hear the dreaded tones of dun dun dun dun whenever I am in a body of water ... River, lake, pool lol it gets me Everytime. "That's power you can't buy!" Thank you boys and happy 4th of July 😎

Watch_N_Rewatch

Chris has his list of "Tit Movies" tattooed on his body along with a single polaroid of Eric with "Don't believe his lies" written on it.

Jason

You just articulated every fear I have showing any of my kids any movie I like.

MarkNM

Big Beautiful Podcast right here! 😅

Paul

I like 2, shoulda leaned more into it being Friday the 13th with a shark with all the teens

David Thompson

That E.T. is bordering on Peter Lorre

Sara Syd

Is it a hot take to say that Spielberg never topped Jaws? Either way, it's the truth.

David

I have a story that could provide a bit of an answer to whether Jaws would be seen as "slow" or "boring". I host outdoor movie nights in my city where I set up a projector and a huge screen and set up signs in my neighborhood for all to come. Some nights I get almost 30 people. One summer I screened Jaws and a large group of early 20s showed up and told me none of them had seen it. So now I'm super excited I'm like "oh man, you're going to love this!". After the movie I asked them what they thought and the highlights are: - Boring - Why don't we see the shark more? - Robert Shaw monolgue was dumb I cried that night

Comrade Trash Panda

That’s a bad hat Andrew

Pete

you're gonna need a bigger podcast
