Episode #808: Lucy (2014)

“The four of us are on a one-way bullet train to Stupid City” - Andrew on covering this movie for the show

On this week’s episode, the Summer Blockbuster Extravaganza does indeed head to Stupid City as we’re talking about the really silly, really short, sci-fi thriller, Lucy! How totally great is Choi Min-sik in this movie? Precisely how many seconds is Morgan Freeman standing on-screen? When Lucy gets so smart, why is she still unable to understand and speak multiple languages? With the action and fight choreography being as fun as they are, couldn’t we have gotten more of that and less of Morgan Freeman giving that lecture? And do people at the front desk of a Westin care if you’re going to eat at the hotel restaurant? PLUS: Lucy visits all the best Times Square chain restaurants and attractions!

Lucy stars Scarlett Johansson, Morgan Freeman, Amr Waked, Julian Rhind-Tutt, Pilou Asbaek, Lio Tipton, and Choi Min-sik as Mr. Jang; directed by Luc Besson.

Lucy 2: this bitch is everywhere

MKEJay11

I wonder if this film using the 10% brain thing was the studio dumbing the script down like they did with the matrix (batteries instead of processor/cpu memory) because without that brain bit you've got a movie that is about someone being rapidly evolved into a new plain of existence (possibly just dying, we don't know) and leaving all the knowledge they unlock for the rest of us to decipher, which seems like it could of been a lot more philosophical than what we ended up with.

Kureigu

1:41:01 such a long pause while Andrew waited for any recognition, I thought my playback had stopped

Josh

It’s always nice to be listening to an episode about a movie. I know I’ve seen and just have to take your guys word for it on what happens because I don’t remember a damn thing about the movie other than it’s starring Scarlett Johansson and Morgan Freeman is there to probably finance a new boat or something. There are some movies I will see at the used bookstore or used video store in Pasadena that make me wonder why I don’t own them. This is not one of those movies. Great job as always.

Ed Harris

Scarjo fan? Give me little sis, Pugh ftw

Brandon

Scarjo impression aided by four packs a day.

Brandon

Ouch, this flick was bad. But then I turned on Beethoven. Oof! This month is a dumpster fire. Well done, boys.

Brandon

I liked that much more than expected given the man's recent output - at the very least, I question whether or not there's enough material there to make it a Stay Tuned (outside of the obviously miscast leads, of course).

profondo robbo

Hundred percent agree. People busted a nut over the one that opened in DC's Union Station and I cannot understand it.

Thomas Friedlander

Happened to me with Kill Bill Vol.1 but it was on the DVD! (The scene where Uma goes into the bar and speaks Japanese)

Craig

In the words of David Sims, "Fuck Ehrlich"

Tim O'

Another entry into the ever-growing list of films in Morgan Freeman's "don't give a shit" era: the 2023 Zach Braff-directed A Good Person, co-starring Florence Pugh. It's so funny that Freeman has starred in not one, but *two* Braff films.

Z

David Ehrlich put this on his best of 2014

Jamie

Are we sure he didn't write the script? 😂

TDB

I'm getting REAL TIRED of watching something on streaming, and someone starts speaking in a different language and now I'm playing a game of "is this a narrative device or is this streaming service just staffed by idiots?"

Matt

You know the boys have seen some sh*t when someone mentions a George C. Scott movie where a dolphin tries to assassinate a president and they hardly bat an eye.

Shawn

I can't really appreciate a premise when it is built on bullshit. And the bullshit was proven to be bullshit a long time ago too. The movie takes itself too seriously for me to enjoy the stupidity like cabin or to look past the bullshit as scifi like jupin. Great episode, though

Jonathan Lyons

First time, my God that ending...I almost set off the fire alarm with how hard I was laughing

JK

I love I got all the way to the end and thought the episode crashed, but no it was just a very long pause after Andrew made a reference to the ending song 🤣🤣 been there dude!

Rylee Jeffers

Never in a million years would I have guessed that Eric would compare this movie to The Tree of Life

Tim O'

I think this might be one of Terrence Howard’s favourite movies.

Deano Rezzz

Raising Cane's is fucking garbage. I'm convinced that place is just a mob front with an air fryer in the back.

Erin Hardy

Lucy Limitless, played by Lucy Lawless

MarkNM

Just got to the climbing the wall chained up scene, already stupid as fuck 😁

David Thompson

I am sorry to report that dolphins have gone as far as inventing blowhole stuff, so humans definitely can't take credit for anal. Maybe Morgan Freeman was onto something??

Emily B

Morgan Freeman has an egregious lack of curiosity in this movie. He’s a professor of “what capabilities a brain has at certain percentages,” and when asked “what happens at 100%” he’s sincerely shocked and says “well I’ve never thought of that before.” One good thing about the movie is I gave it the undeserved dignity of pausing while taking a squeege, and seeing there was less than an hour left after the movie just started was what fueled me to continue

RJ Cunningham

All of the Scarjo impressions are top tier.

Tala Hobballah

Glad I'm not the only one that noticed the weird subtitle issue, but unfortunately it never occurred to me to turn off the subtitles so I could understand what the French and Korean characters are saying, sigh. Oh it occurred to me that Besson did Valerian right after this which feels like WOW a total stay tuned in my eyes. Unfortunately, Besson couldn't keep that one under 90 minutes. It's well over two hours. @_@

Busiris

Lucy is that rare movie that could have benefited from swapping in Milla Jovovich for Scarlett. Then there would be no pretense of having an audience attempt to take this seriously.

MarkNM

Lucy 2: Lucy Liu

Gone

Dane DeHaan? That’s a name I haven’t heard in a LOOOOOONG time…

Wesley Hall

This would be a better movie if it were about Lucy Van Pelt struggling to get her PHD in psychiatry

James C Harris

I'm always impressed with how quick Andrew and Stephen are to shit on problematic directors. <3

Tala Hobballah

Instant classic episode, wow! Also realizing how much I confused this movie with Limitless for years

Aaron Dowler

Besson used 10 percent of his brain when casting Valerian. Dane DeHaan? Why??

Eren Keskin

I loved the scene with Scarjo sitting in an office chair reaching out to touch “Lucy” like God touching Adam’s finger in the Sistine Chapel. Only through science will we evolve into god like beings. This subliminal evolution suggestion shows up in the first M3gan movie. Towards the end of that movie they have the little 60 lbs girl put on broken robot arms to reach down to lift an adult off the floor, implying that only when humanity and AI comes together our acceptance of AI as the future will help humans evolve into higher beings….. or AI will become our overlords and murder us all.

Catboyslim

I personally love this movie lol

Arthur martinez

That subtitles issue pissed me off so much. I was about an hour in before I finally tried turning them off. No way was I going to go back to see what the Koreans and French had been saying. It was probably dumb like the rest of the movie anyway.

Tony King

The pinnacle of hunan evolution, a USB stick.

Matthew Lloyd

Really fun episode. I think the guys took some CPH4 because everyone was firing on all cylinders.

James

I like to put this on to watch while I’m rowing, this and the beginning of Ghost in the Shell….I think what I’m really trying to say is Scarjo is hot and I love bad robots….

Catboyslim

I was really hoping she turned into a dolphin

Hard To Gwil

Not familiar with the movie, but I already bought my ticket for the bullet train!

Joey T

We as a society don't talk enough about how Lucy turns into a fucking flashdive. For a film that grossed about half a billion $, it is cultual vapor.

CharlesGrodin'sToupee

There should be a limitless x luci crossover on max that is improbably already 7 seasons in

Will See

I hated this movie a decade ago and have never revisited it because its awful
