Episode #807: The Return of the Living Dead

“It’s the only zombie movie that’s appropriate to watch at a July 4th barbecue! - Andrew

On this week’s show, the Summer Blockbuster Extravaganza gets a little spooktacular as we chat about the super-fun, summer-set zombie flick, The Return of the Living Dead! Why does this Skeleton Warehouse have to be open until 10PM on a holiday weekend? How great is that half-dog puppet? Isn’t it great how Russo and Romero split up their zombie sequels so we could get both sides of their shared zombie vision? Why does Frank use that entire roll of paper towels like it’s a sponge? And word to the wise, never hang out in an eerie cemetery after dark! PLUS: James Karen welcomes all zombie punks to Pathmark!

The Return of the Living Dead stars Clu Gulager, James Karen, Don Calfa, Beverly Randolph, John Philbin, Jewel Shepard, Miguel A. Nuñez Jr., Brian Peck, Linnea Quigley, Mark Venturini, Jonathan Terry, and Thom Mathews as Freddy; directed by Dan O’Bannon.

The dude that played Scuz is a really bad guy.

Christopher Oxentine

I have NO idea why I remembered this, but the TV commercial with the little girl and the nuke is an LBJ campaign ad: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riDypP1KfOU

Rose Esposito

When there’s no more room in Hell, the dead will roam Pathmark.

Stewart Moncure

Why did I choose to finish listening to this while eating lunch at work?

The Wheel

For a REALLY brief moment I thought Steve was going to tell a story about being a giant Tony Hawk fanbody who wrote him a bunch of fan mail, and I would've been ALL the way here for that story.

johnny stocker

Welcome to Pathmark, where there's a clean up in every aisle.

Joey T

As i learned from the MST3K Amazing Collossal Episode Guide, its Clu GOO-lager, not Gallagher, Marc! Great episode, great movie

Brian Schlosser

gob-lin

Brandon

agree. banger.

This was my first zombie film and try to watch it once a year. Still love this movie. Not too many jump scares in this film, but had a jump scare when I saw the credit for Scuz. POS Brian Peck.

“John Puppetguy”

Brendan Klein

Always liked how the Spooktacular intro has not just sound bites from better known horror films but also comparatively lesser known 70s gems like The Wicker Man and Lucio Fulci's Zombie.

Ed Harris

An absolutely brutal episode for Pathmark, my lord

Tim O'

On the O'Bannon note, curious if the guys have seen his other Ronald Shusett collab Dead & Buried. Good little slow burn horror mystery with a great creeper turn by Jack 'Internet's nemesis Grandpa Joe' Albertson.

Todd B

This may be the most sacred horror movie VHS cover I’d see at my local video rental store (Knapp Video RIP). Right up there with Night of the Demons which always fascinated me. At 1:08:53 there is a very Brendan Gleeson-like “freeze or I’ll blow your fucking brains out!” Followed by “Arghhhggg” one second later. I enjoyed that quite a bit

RJ Cunningham

God that Spooktacular theme hits like a truck

Matt

Buckeye Bones! All our skeletons are American made, Skeleton Leauge approved and delivered free of charge. (Note - All skeletons are sourced from Hawkeyes or Hoosiers)

Nicholas Knecht

You want juicy zombie cock, watch 28 Years Later

Or a Croque Madame?

Just got to the part about training to handle the dead. I taught English at a college that had a funeral services school and you always wanted the funeral services kids in your class. They had to keep the GPA up so high they did the work and studied. Lotta metal/punk kids but real sweet and real professional.

James Richie

“Ohio Skeleton Farms.” As a resident of this horribly gerrymandered state, don’t give our representatives any ideas! They are already trying to rescind our legal weed we voted for. Also, this is my favorite zombie movie.

Derek Baxter

Contrary to what Steve says, Pathmark was a good super market

El Cocodrillo

Jizzed on feet getting burnt to look like toasted white cheddar on mac and cheese

Paterick Caddery

I'm not sure how to submit to the mailbag, but I discovered my father's porn collection as a child. It included a Blue Boy magazine, a gay porn magazine, and the issue he posed for. I also found photos of him from his time dancing for Chippendales.

Arthur martinez

We could call them Zuppets!

Adam Ray

I saw this first so it ended up being the reverse for me.

profondo robbo

Hearing the Spooktacular theme in the summer during everything going on in the world... such a balm for the soul. "This Spooktacular special brought to you by Pathmark: Celebrating 10 years post-Chapter 11 Bankruptcy!"

Busiris

Spooktacular episode... Hell Yeah!!!

Nicholas Knecht

Note to self: If I ever attend a Coen Brothers Q&A I have to ask if saying Fargo was a true story was a nod to Return of the Living Dead?

Adam Ray

Anyone else see this way after the fact and exclaimed "It's Paulie from Weekend At Bernie's!" when they saw Don Calfa?

Adam Ray

Return 3 came on HBO a lot and saw that one first a few times. 2005 SyFy channel made two totally dog shit sequels, parts 4 and 5

Darryl Bowen

Sennnd morrre podcasterrrrs.
