The Nexus #105 "Once Upon a Planet" / "The Nth Degree"

On this edition of our Star Trek recap show, The Nexus, we're chatting about two pretty cheesy episodes of Trek!

First up on TOSTAS, it's the pseudo-sequel episode, "Once Upon a Planet." Originally airing, November 3, 1973, this episode has the Enterprise crew returning to the pre-Risa "pleasure planet" that the live action crew visited in the dreadful episode, "Shore Leave." We meet the "Alice in Wonderland" crew again briefly, and then our intrepid heroes go on to battle yet another Super Computer that's trying to leave the planet. Weird stuff!

Then, several lightyears away on TNG, we're chatting about the Reg Barclay-centric episode, "The Nth Degree." Premiering March 30, 1991, this episode is a riff on "Flowers for Algernon" where the engineering ne'er do well, Reg, gets super intelligence after being zapped by a probe. Lots of Geordi getting peeved at Reg in this one, which is great!

The Nexus is a WHM podcast where the guys futilely go through two Star Trek series at the same time. Thank you so much for continuing to support our family of shows—we couldn't do it without you! We know you have lots of options for pods and we're super-stoked you chose to spend some time with us—thanks again!

Reductive take coming I think if you took the dialogue stems from TOSTAS and sweetened the SFX and MX, you can have an excellent radio drama. Sleepwalking performances notwithstanding.

Gino Volpe

I understand why you feel the end of Nth Degree is a bit deflating, but I don't mind a good "it was all a misunderstanding" ending

Jethro Gulner

“Chuffed” means pleased. For the love of god man.

Duncan

Think... He's watching the women poop in the holodeck? "Computer... Load bathroom Bettys." "Load all crewmembers?" "Yes. Engage"

James Bergquist

Aww, I’ve always had a soft spot for Shore Leave. I think it was one of the first episodes I ever saw, when repeats were on every day at lunchtime while I was home from school for summer. (I also remember my mother laughing hysterically at the Gorn fight)

Craig

Not Kirk but … stay tuned!

Craig

Stephon Urkel ah villain

Sass

Kirk definitely had sex with that cat lady at some point, right?

johnny stocker

Glad to see some love for the OG Jurassic Park novel lol you're better off re/re-reading it than going to see Rebirth this summer. And yeah Nedry's death is brutal in the book but not even the most horrific one

Trev Herron

Cabin cackling about Roxanne almost made me crash my fuckin car.

Infinite Terror

"I dipped my balls in Mad hatter's peach tea, Jim."

Eren Keskin

Reg and Geordi's holoporn is comedy gold. Great ep.

Coincidentally I just had a wild urge to purchase and read Jurassic Park and I got to Nedry's death last night. Hoo yeah. Blinded by spit, torso slashed open with intestines spilling out, and picked up by his head for the death snap. Crichton nailed that one. Side note: Book Henry Wu has a much more significant role, and John Hammond is downright Trumpian.

MarkNM

They should’ve kept Brainiac Barclay a recurring villain in TNG.
