Episode #796: The Accountant

“I want real kids fighting each other!” - Chris, on the flashbacks

On this week’s episode, we’re chatting about the nowhere-near-as-good-as-its-sequel assassin film, The Accountant. Couldn’t we have done this whole thing without all the flashbacks to them as kids? Did we need the Treasury Department cold on the Accountant’s trail the whole movie? Didn’t everyone want to yell, ‘No Touching,’ whenever we see Jeffrey Tambor’s character in prison? And how creepy is it that Ben draws faces on all those melon’s he’s going to shoot? PLUS: Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber? Really?

The Accountant stars Ben Affleck, Anna Kendrick, J.K. Simmons, Jeffrey Tambor, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, John Lithgow, Jean Smart, and Jon Bernthal as Brax; directed by Gavin O’Connor.

Episode #796: The Accountant

Comments

Didn't we just praise Penguin for their flashback episodes not too long ago?

Dylan

As someone who was born and raised in Joliet and worked at a knockoff Dairy Queen in Plainfield during high school I found those references hyper specific for a movie that was clearly shot nowhere near lllinois.

HockeenightsCT

Going to see accountant 2 tonight, without ever seeing the first one so hoping the two listens to this episode I've had gives me all the back story I need lol

Kureigu

I used to live in Kankakee Illinois. Always crazy when your podunk little down is mentioned in a Hollywood movie. Also Plainfield IL looks alot like California in this movie.

Les Whinen

You're the exact opposite of Steven from Charlotte, who dumped his then-gf because of Ultraviolet. 😂

Rose Esposito

All this talk about boy fights, and no one brought up the best kid fight in film history: Baby Snake Eyes vs. Little Storm Shadow in GI Joe: Rise of Cobra.

CharlesGrodin'sToupee

Boy Fights! Plus: Baby Buster: A Fifth Grader Wets His Bed

HockeenightsCT

Wasn't there a running joke on Arrested Development that Jeffrey Tambor used to sell VHS tapes of his kids fighting? They should have incorporated that into the script for this movie to get some more kid fights in there.

Tim O'

It's like how ScarJo's best performances are when she plays something pretending to be human (her, under the skin)

Jamie

Affleck is great when he plays an asshole without range (the Town/Gone Girl)

Robert

holy SHIT I had completely locked away my memories of Voyage of the Mimi

TJ Guiney

With all the Jon Bernthal love and recs - Check him out in the HBO mini-series We Own This City. David Simon does the true story of a bunch of crooked cops led by Bernthal, and he is insanely good in it.

Kemper

All due to Bernthal, and there's plenty due, but no, Eric, we won't be "cycling out" Statham anytime soon. We have one bald lead in the entire universe. You haired types are ruthless in ur attempts to eradicate our representation. George is getting upset.

Brandon

mmmmm eggs benny at 7pm.

Brandon

Sure is! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

I beg your finest pardon. We will not slander breakfast for dinner!

Josh

It's OK to like a movie.

Brandon

We sorta had little kid fights in Daredevil (2003). Remember, with the little Soprano DSB?

Rose Esposito

Goddamn it! Eric_Cummingstein was my log in for everything! Thanks Chris.

Jason

Congrats, Cody! We hope you did the episode (and also dig on Part 2 because it's a fun movie! lol) - Andrew

We Hate Movies

We absolutely watched the Peacemaker series, but that was like two years and several other movies/shows ago. He fights kids at some point? Been a minute. - Andrew

We Hate Movies

Belated happy birthday wishes! We hope you enjoyed the ep! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

Saw this IN THEATERS with a girl I was seeing for a bit. She visibly hated it the whole time and said afterwards it gave her a headache. Hit me the next day with the "I think we should see other people". I'm not entirely convinced it wasn't because it was my turn to pick the movie and I chose....this. Met my wife like a week and a half later though, so it all worked out!

Matt

Honestly this movie's take on autism is way more optimistic and respectful than anything that warbly fuck has said imo. These folks can do anything with the right support and accommodations! Including mass murder! 💜

Rose Esposito

I have to be one of those awful Birthday People for a moment - So having a late April birthday generally meant fuck all to see at the movies most my life. And if I want to extend that to “half-birthdays” well that means October which is also usually a crap time for decent releases. But lo, in the year 2016 a ridiculous Frankenmovie dropped where Ben Affleck plays an avenging autistic accountant moonlighting as a dark superhero assassin (which ☑️seen, ☑️seen, and GOALS) and I got to celebrate a half birthday drinking beer in a BarcaLounger dine-in theatre and for once had a good bday memory at the movies And now in an even darker timeline, y’all dropped an episode about it the day after another regular shitty birthday when I can’t even safely go to the movies any more Thanks guys, really appreciate this one, really mashing the dopamine buttons

The Mad Jay Woman

A Cure and Clash reference in the same bit? Is it my secret birthday?

Infinite Terror

I have an affinity for Ben Affleck that kind of flies in the face of logic considering how few of his movies I actually truly like. He's been a star for 30 years, and it still feels weird to me when he plays an action hero.

MarkNM

Better submit this to the IMDB trivia

Glug Glug

He does the puzzle upside down, same as Bobby Budnick does in that episode of Salute Your Shorts where Budnick and Michael take sick to skip instructional swim in hopes to eat ice cream. Yes I have a very fulfilling life.

DMAC

As a father of young children I can tell you that you need at least 3 passes with the windex to get those glass markers off the windows. Huge pain in the ass for the office cleaning crew.

Kyle Godown

I am guessing after all the kid fight talk and no mention of it, that you all haven't watched the Peacemaker series. It is absolutely fantastic.

Jake Kroker

Back in the day it was against the law to have a cop, FBI, or CIA procedural tv show and not have a twee dressed autism-coded character help solve crimes like they were the team's mentat from Dune.

Jason

I had to go back and check out the trailer for this movie because I wanted to confirm that the Radiohead's song "Everything in Its Right Place" is used in the trailer and it totally is. After watching Vanilla Sky for the WHM episode, the Daredevil finale, and then now this, I can't seem to escape that song!

Busiris

I can't believe that this movie is so tone deaf about autism. Did RFK Jr write this?

Matthew Mariner

Autism power!

Paul

I found it an advertisement for beating the autism out of children, which is bad obviously

WHM: had no inclination to see the second film after I was disuaded after all the bad word-of-mouth from this first film from 2014. So much, I skipped it in theaters. However: after Eric, Andrew & Sean Weiner's positive reception from the WHM SXSW ON SCREEN LIVE to this new film coming out Friday back on St. Pats -- I will withhold my listening of this until I watch it before seeing the new film with my (now!) fiancée, Alexis this weekend. We both met you all after your Portland Nov. 2024 live show and she is now a fan -- given she's also from the Tri-State area, too. Thanks for being in my life as a podcast since 2017 & all good things going forward for the show!🙏You all have always been super kind to me after every meet-and-greet I've attended since 2019.
