The Nexus #103 "The Visitor" / "Fascination"

On this month's trip into our Star Trek space ribbon, it's a patron-curated episode where we're talking about two wildly different episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine!

First up, we're talking about the terribly sad, but very excellent episode, "The Visitor." First airing back on October 9, 1995, this episode features Tony Todd, in one of the great performances of his storied career, as a grown Jake Sisko trying to figure out how to free his father from the heartbreaking subspace trap he gets stuck inside. Todd is fantastic here, in a role that was far from his more well-known Trek role, Kurn, Brother of Worf!

On the other episode, the pendulum swings the other way as we discuss the incredibly silly, and wildly horny episode, "Fascination." Premiering back on November 28, 1994, this episode sees beloved horny character, Lwaxana Troi show up for the Bajoran Gratitude Festival, bringing with her a virus that makes people super horny! We also have O'Brien and Keiko having a bit of a spat over Keiko's work schedule, Kira's guy friend hitting on Dax, and Odo doing all that he can to avoid sleeping with Lwaxana!

The Nexus is a WHM podcast where the guys futilely go through two Star Trek series at the same time. Thank you so much for continuing to support our family of shows—we couldn't do it without you! We know you have lots of options for pods and we're super-stoked you chose to spend some time with us—thanks again!

I’d say watch all of DS9. The first couple of seasons have some very average episodes, but the series arc starts pretty early, plus anything with Gul Dukat and Louise Fletcher is simply incredible.

Tom

Morn is one of my favorite running jokes in all of DS9 - “Who Mourns for Morn” would also be a good episode for you guys to cover eventually.

Stephanie Taylor

Nrom?

Blake Jordan

I like how the Sisko impression is forming in real time.

Admin note: when you all have a chance just update the header of this post to reflect the correct numbering "# 103." The filename is fine so clearly this is not a priority. And on a different note I am so glad you all got to review "The Visitor" before the year 2035. What a great episode of television. Really transcends Trek or even "sci fi" and is just a wonderful screenplay. Tony Todd is a consummate professional and Avery Brooks really sells the idea of one's kid growing old before a parent's eyes.

Chris Vincenti

Morn is indeed a wink to the Cheers character! What’s Morn spelled backwards?

Amanda P

Interesting to hear the Gang take an Avery Brooks/Sisko impression out for a walk.

Justine Prudhomme

In Star Trek toy news, they made a Disco Bones action figure! They made a Disco Bones figure! https://trekmovie.com/2025/03/28/review-exo-6s-new-star-trek-the-motion-picture-figure-is-the-real-mccoy/

They’ve done Odo and Quark quite a bit but the surprise for me in these eps was Steve and Andrew nailing Sisko’s unique cadence. Tricky one to do!

Craig

If you want another Tony Todd star trek, check out the Voyager episode The Prey. It's not that great, but Tony Todd is going full bore with with his gravelly voice in that one, it's worth it just for that. Also Brooks and Stewart do share scenes in the DS9 pilot, they talk face to face.

Wesley

I don’t think I’ve heard Steve’s “Odo” voice before; that was really good lol

Matt Nelson

Voyage is very worth it, IMO. - Andrew

As someone firmly in the pro-DS9 camp I’m glad you finally got to see a great episode (and one that wasn’t reliant on the overarching story). Even so, there are some terrible early episodes of the show which would make for great Nexus episodes just as the early TNG stuff did.

Craig

Word!

Craig

Two things. One, don't start DS9 when Word gets there. There was already a lot of build up and fantastic episodes before he got there, and the show really found it's footing by season 3. You would miss some great Dukat moments and even some good Quark moments. And second, while I love the visitor, I wouldn't even say it's the best Tony Todd episode of DS9. The one where he comes to live with Word is an all time great.

Mark Scott

Is it me or is the guy who played Bariel a dead ringer for Andrew Cuomo? It really adds to the creep factor of "Fascination".

Hadn't seen DS9 until three or four years ago. Found a list that showed all the eps that forward the over arching plot of the series and just watched those and read synopsis of other eps not listed and decided weather or not to watch those too. Overall watched probably 80% of the series. Tried to do the same thing with Voyager after that but only got three eps in and gave up...will probably give it another try later down the road.

Darryl Bowen

It's wild to me that they didn't choose the Tuvix episode.

Emil Svensson

I feel like Voyager would make for some wild episodes

Winson Paine

My final semester of college I took a class called “Star Trek, law, and ethics” which is basically just watching Star Trek episodes. We mostly watched TOS and TNG but we did watch one episode of VOY (the one where Q makes Janeway a judge to see if they should allow this other Q to die) and one episode of DS9 but hell if I remember which one it was??? No offense to the show but clearly it didn’t have an impact on me. I know everyone loves it but idk, I never could get into it, so I’m with some of y’all.

Worth a sad one to hear Eric finally say he liked a DS9 episode. The goofy episodes may be better for laughs, but glad you drew mine out just to showcase how great the show can be.

"When are you having kids?" "Next time I raw dog your daughter I'll shoot you a text when I'm done."

Michael Daniels

There's what, 22 episodes total to get through? We're already close to halfway done with them. I like getting a little bit more time with the TOS impressions, plus it's not like DS9 or Voyager gets off to a flying start. If we're gonna complain about Nexus programming, it should be because they still haven't done Undiscovered Country!

Tim O'

It gets so good!

Jason

Oh Mr. Data, I am going to give the crew a performance of Gilbert and Sullivan's Pirate of Penzance they're never going to forget!

Jason

Steve is correct. I am the first-born of a big Catholic family and my siblings have blessed my parents with 11 grandchildren so I have mercifully coasted through life without hearing a peep about having kids

Chris Rose

I'm about halfway through S1 and have already mostly warmed up to it. I think Kira and Dax are underwritten (big shock) but Odo is great and I love his dynamic with Quark

Chris Rose

These poor podcasters should double up on TNG, get thru it all, switch to Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks, and then be done with it. DS9 takes almost 3 seasons to get going, and the other shows are mostly mediocre. Bring on the hate, I can take it. Edit: don't mind me, I let a real world irritant creep in for a minute there.

The Visitor is a Star Trek all-timer. Eric, get it together! DS9 is fantastic 😂

TDB

I hope you guys end up covering DS9, I'm sure it'll grow on Steve and Eric

Felipe Sobreiro

I've probably mentioned it before but, while I love DS9 from the beginning and would always recommend starting from the start, I do think it gets good from the start of season 3 (or more accurately the finale of season 2), and then great from 4. But I guess anything to get Eric to watch the show is worth it! 🙂

Tony King

RIP Tony Todd. He was also Kurn, Worfs brother, in many episodes in TNG. He was a real one

ediblegenius

There's multiple times Sisko just chews the hell out of Word and it's a sight to behold. Dude took no shit from man or Klingon.
