Animation Damnation: Batman: Caped Crusader - "Nocturne"

On this month's edition of our cartoon recap show, we're talking about an episode of one of the best animated shows of last year, Batman: Caped Crusader!

The episode in question, "Nocturne," which was unceremoniously dumped on Amazon along with the other nine episodes back on August 1 of last year, features a blue collar Killer Croc working as a carny, a gaggle of orphaned Robins, Bruce Wayne getting beat up by circus freaks, an eerie girl with soul-sucking abilities, Batman changing in the car, and much, much more! PLUS: Why in the world is this the only Batman series not on Max?

Thanks so much for being so awesome and supporting Animation Damnation on Patreon! Please be sure to spread the word! Your support is what keeps this operation going! We know you have a number of choices for pods and we appreciate you spending some time with us!

I don't understand why Bruce didn't try to save his ass by telling him he's friend with Doctor Thompkins or that he's Bruce fucking Wayne and he could buy and sell them in a heartbeat (a real asshole move, but it would make sense for his douchebag playboy persona).

Matt Eldritch

This series is amazing, Amazon not so much.

Daryl Williams

I love that they beat Bruce cuz they think he's a pedo. The bearded woman is like "why are you looking for 2 young girls" and Bruce is trying to be charming and they whoop him

Paterick Caddery

That was only for the doctoral candidates.

This is on Amazon because it got Zaslav-ed. It was "cancelled" and not going to air in Max, but they sold it and a Christmas special called "A Very Merry Batman" to Prime so it could make some money. At least if the press around the comics industry is to be believed. And this show rulee. I too have watched it twice through, and I think a third go before season 2 is in order.

So, Bullock was created in the early 80s as a corrupt cop working for Gotham's corrupt mayor, Hamilton Hill. The writer who created him, Doug Moench I believe, wound up liking the character so much that he has him make a face turns at the end of the Hill arc, and he wound up working with Gordon. Since then, Bullock has been the "bend the law, but don't break it," kind of cop, and DC's various reboots erased him starting out as a crook half a dozen retcons ago, give or take.

By the time the dust settles and the children are found... you need to be in Poughkeepsie. Words to live by! This episode--with all the asides made to other episodes--made me watch the whole show. Thanks guys!

KRA

Did you need to orphan some children in order to graduate?

Matt Eldritch

When the time comes for Pattinson to film The Batman: Part Deux, he will be as old as Keaton was in The Flash.

I must have missed it (in my defense I was in the shower listening to ya'll...that sounds creepy now :D :) ) but I wasn't just addressing you guys in general and I should have been more clear on that. I remember at the time a lot of people talking about Dickie and Jason and timmy and Carrie as the "four Robins" and ignoring our poor fifth Robin lol

We mentioned it. - Andrew

One thing that kind of gets overlooked is that Stephanie is 100% a reference to Stephanie Brown (who was Robin for 5 minutes) as part of their including all Robins

The reason the Jason kid is a red head is because Jason Todd was a red head PRE-CRISIS on Infinite Earth. In that continuity he was also an acrobat. After CRISIS, DC made him have black hair and be a street thief trying to steal the Batmobile’s wheels. Later, Grant Morrison reconciled that to make Jason a red head who Bruce made to dye his hair so no one knew Robin was changed.

I don't know what it says about me that my first thought when they said "I'm sorry I gave your girlfriend that pearl necklace" was not of jewelry.

@ 21:10, I believe that the Jim Corrigan here isn't the one who becomes the Spectre but instead is the crooked cop from Ed Brubaker and Greg Rucka's "Gotham Central" comic book series.

Matt Eldritch

I stopped watching Gotham after s2 or 3 but he was basically a good guy in that, I think? I guess the thing that’s interesting about this show is that it does get to play around with established characters by saying “how would they act in this specific time period”

Lar

Someday we’ll be free of his BS. Not soon enough, apparently.

This show was sooo good. I’m behind on the animated DC shows (Harley Quinn and creature commandos) but this was a nice quick fun watch. I agree Eggers would make a cool 20s carnival movie but tbh this episode just made me think of Nightmare Alley by GDT.

Lar

I have a 5-6 hour flight next week and I'm saving this and next week's WHM episode for that. I think hearing the boys talking in my ears is the only thing that prevents me from going stir crazy on those long flights, for which I've had quite a few these past couple of years.

Busiris

I believe the reason it's on Amazon and not max is cause David whatever his name is turned it down. What an idiot.

Frank Grimes

First time hearing of this series. But it's on Prime, so I'll add it to the exercise playlist for today.

Sarah Montgomery

I minored in Orphanology in college.

Thanks for making me aware of the series - I hadn't even heard of it, but I'm sure as hell going to check it out now.

Dominic Kovell

great series...the thing that really shocked me was Bullock's characterization. I only really had BTAS to go off of, and in BTAS he and Bats had their differences but they ultimately had respect for each other...here though...Bullock is straight ACAB

Frank Grimes

This series really snuck up on me. I didn't hear shit about it and one night I just checked it out and was blown away.
