Episode #779: The Beekeeper

“He’s constantly the hype man for the Beekeeper!” - Eric on Jeremy Irons in this movie

On this episode, we’re having an absolute blast chatting about the outrageously fun revenge flick, The Beekeeper! First off, is this the best Jason Statham Movie™️? Did we really need these very bad and uninteresting F.B.I. characters? Can every Statham revenge movie feature at least one scene where he’s beating the crap out of tech bros? And how about that spectacular dummy work? PLUS: Rest in Peace, Marvin the Bee!

The Beekeeper stars Jason Statham, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Josh Hutcherson, Bobby Naderi, Minnie Driver, David Witts, Taylor James, Jemma Redgrave, Phylicia Rashād, and Jeremy Irons as Wallace Westwyld (lol); directed by David Ayer.

It would have been more realistic if she opened a fake email and clicked a link and had to call someone. Maybe she did beforehand and that caused the pop up. This shit is rampant irl.

Ray

But how many mines were in this movie? They weren’t mentioned, so I assume the entire film took place inside mines.

AlsoNamedB0rt

Great episode. Loved the return of the phrase "regular degular". I would love to hear the WHM guys cover Snatch.

DMAC

This movie takes the "This goes all the way to the top, all the way to the White House!" trope so literally that it is hilarious. Like the climax of Black Dynamite but done with a straight face.

CharlesGrodin'sToupee

Amazing movie and pod, been on a Statham bender since and would love to hear a WHM on The Italian Job. Perfect dadfernoon early aughts bank robbery with Wahlberg, Charlize, Sutherland, Statham, Mos Def and Ed Norton as the villain? It really has it all and I think y'all would have a great time kicking it around

Max Buster

I just watched The Beekeeper, basically because you guys did an episode and boy was it the most enjoyably stupid thing I've seen in years. A real 80s throwback. Dumb as balls and all the better for it.

Ross Tyrie

I saw this movie. I loved it. My first thought after I came down from my bee-high was "the We Hate Movies MUST do this one." (But I am a bit sad you dudes didn't mention the scene with Statham standing in the call centre clapping with empty-eyed glee with the rest of the scam wankers. I'll be ok though. I'm a survivor, like the Beekeeper.)

Anna Bee

The dummy being dragged off the bridge into the water and the other beekeeper tumbling out of the truck while on fire were very funny things to see. That was when i realized i was watching a comedy.

Clever Gurrrl

We need a Statham Month. I need y’all’s take on his wig in Home Front.

J Ecochard

yep! link is below! It's a lot, so Ctrl+F is your friend - Steve https://www.whmpodcast.com/whmprime

We Hate Movies

Fun fact: Phylicia Rashad was able to perfectly capture the sense of hopelessness and despair by accessing her memory of the day she realized nobody would ever watch The Cosby Show again

Jamie

I would have preferred A episode about boy kills world , because I think the worst the movie the better the episode it makes.

Mark D Myers

For listener request month is there a list of every movie that has been done already?

Scott

Yeah i will need to contact them. The page says q and a free for Welsh patreon level but doesn't seem to give the opinion to add it to order without it costing the normal price.

Kureigu

I get it man, it's like your 10-year rule. At some point you had to be like "who really decided we needed this rule?" Curation is king.

Mark Ibarra

Sorry to hear that Kureigu. If you're having issues, you should speak with the Moment folks directly; we're unable to assist with technical issues as we have nothing to do with the platform. - Andrew

We Hate Movies

We're old, Mark. We just like to talk about stuff we wanna talk about and boy howdy, The Beekeeper was one we wanted to chat about! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

I tried that signing up to moments with patreon to get the q and a free and it didn't do it was still adding the cost on?

Kureigu

I just want to thank Steve for sharing his story of getting scammed by an email. I, too, do dumb stuff all the time, but never feel like I can share those stories because so few people admit these things. Thanks for making the world a more honest place, Steve!

Derek Baxter

I’m listening to this at the same time my wife is on the phone next to me with my father-in-law. Arguing with him that his brother’s daughter in Pakistan does not need $500 for a wheel chair, no matter what the guy who contacted him in Facebook told him.

Dan sulin

Had never heard of the movie. Assumed it came out before the community episode. Just a wild coincidence that both involve gardeners with secret nazi tattoos. My bad

Allen M

Respectfully, it is, I do, and it probably wasn't. I got a Community notification for this?

Zeb Hammond

It's crazy that they're hiding the fact Flight Risk is a Mel Gibson directed movie. They show other movies he directed but never show his name.

Darryl Bowen

The energy in this episode is proof positive that the 2024 review didn't need to be "Worst of."

Mark Ibarra

I went to Scotland about 10 years ago and had a cab driver only want to talk to me (in Scottish) about how amazing of an actor is Statham is. I hope you guys bring him up in Oxford to see if the British have the same feelings.

I.C. Weiner

Ah, I was saying MDMA, thanks for the correct! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

Charles Bronson walked so Jason Statham could run

Sass

So at first I thought this movie was about an actual beekeeper. Then I found out it was actually some kind of spy nonsense. Now I find out it's both?! "Inflammable means Flammable?! What a country!"

Matt

I like Phish but not Phish scams

Joey T

Hey guys, "machine elves" is a reference to what a lot of people see when they try DMT. -Your friendly neighborhood hippy

Joey T

I rewatched last night, and it's honestly so funny that Phylicia Rashad GETS THE FRAUD ALERTS FROM HER BANK(s), and yet still decides to Ray Winstone-in-The-Departed herself immediately instead of just clicking "I didn't authorize this transaction." Girl, really. also: why not The Phisherman

Rose Esposito

The Inner Light! Will put forward a request for this, too. An all-time great.

Adam Gaudry

I remember it being surprisingly good, but I somewhat doubt it holds up on rewatches.

Rose Esposito

I am so excited to hear that the WHM crew is coming the UK! I'm in London and have already booked my tickets and hotel to come see you deliver your takes on Darth Vader and Hellraiser. Wish I could come to more of the shows, but kids makes it impossible sadly. But thanks so much guys, really excited for this. I've always hoped you'd come on tour here. In the meantime, time to put forward some WHM and WLM requests for March (Excalibur hint hint).

Adam Gaudry

We need a Marvin solo movie. Need him in a scuba suit!

stephen sammartino

I haven’t seen Fury, but I have seen Suicide Squad…so I’m gonna assume that the tank has a lot of cringe tattoos, at some point offers Common a go with his tank girlfriend, and asks Brad Pitt if “we got beef”

Jonnie Sea

Also I think Beekeepers work like Green Lanterns like they patrol the US

Paterick Caddery

Sure, we have some odd takes I guess, but for the record here, we literally don’t give an opinion on the film Fury in this episode. We mention it’s a film David Ayer directed and then make a furry joke and move on, just fyi, folks! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

If im paying i wanna see some sweat and tears boys

Paterick Caddery

Thanks?

We Hate Movies

It has one of my least favourite tropes: When a woman in sexual peril is saved by a man or the situation is defused by a man, and is then immediately aroused/at ease enough to want to have sex with said man. Brad Pitt's character barges into an apartment in a war-torn town occupied by a mother and daughter. There is a clear perceived threat of sexual violence towards the daughter, to the point where the scene is thoroughly uncomfortable. Enter Brad Pitt's young, fresh-faced subordinate on the tank crew. Apparently his youth (and, if I remember correctly, proficiency on the ol' piano) is enough to make the daughter want to have sex with him in the next room from her mother and the older man she was just expecting to be molested by an hour ago. Stopped watching that movie right quick.

Emil Svensson

I'm so excited for Listening Request Month. I have the perfect movie for them and I really wanna watch them hurt

Paterick Caddery

THIS IS OUR "MOBY DICK."

Mark Ibarra

I was really surprised while watching this how many UK actors I noticed, until I looked it up and it was filmed here. I watched it for the first time last night and really enjoyed it. It was dumb but fun. I'm annoyed I waited this long!

Tony King

LFG! This is how you start a Tuesday! This movie rocks. Do we see a new boomer avengers eu taking off?? Bzzz bzzz those busy whm bees. Thanks for the drop!

Kyle N.

Those vendor email phish scams can be tricky. A few times I almost got tricked...I usually try to call them before executing.

Frank Grimes

"I'm more of a weather dot gov man" he's just like me frfr

Em Smith

The shot where you show a gun, pan away, then show blood against the wall is call a "Shawshank"

Les Whinen

Beekeeper 2: The Hoarder is the sequel we need right now.

James

You've kicked the hornet's nest, now you have to reap the whirlwind. Best mixed metaphor in the movie

Smaug

We got pure Crabin on this one folks lmao

G Goldhar

This might be a reach, but does anyone remember the Community episode with the trampoline? Was that a reference to Master Gardener?

Allen M

In these case I don't normally bother to make sure I've seen the film. Eric's enthusiasm made me switch off till I've seen the movie.

David Thompson

I liked it!

Tim O'Connor

First time watching this movie was one of the most “no way” viewings I’ve ever had. I still can’t tell if they’re in on the joke but goddamn is this hilarious

RJ Cunningham

As a bee, I can confirm Jason is a keeper

Eren Keskin

Beautiful bee movie

Jan

Jan 2026 I hope we get a working man episode

Frank Grimes

I side with Eric on this one, especially about the part about how you could easily throw one of any 80s action star into the movie as the lead for an 80s/90s action movie. When I saw it in theaters last year I literally had the thought that this had Cannon Films written all over it. Maybe not in the modern tone or story but in the audacious and silly moments that make it so fun.

Busiris

Maybe its just me, but i feel like just punching someone repeatedly in the face would be more painful and a better torture method the just using an office stapler on it. The scene is still phenomenal either way.

Taco6N 13

The guys have some odds takes, but i wouldn't take it to seriously Also I've never seen Fury but it's the first time I've seen someone say something negative about it.

Taco6N 13

No, it's mad decent

Kevin Pires

So I'm literally watching it as we speak. For about 45 minutes Statham was kicking the shit out of Tech bros and I'm like HOW IS THIS NOT WLM?? Then they started talking about bees for 25 minutes. EDIT Another half hour in, and boy, this just keeps getting dumber, doesn't it?

johnny stocker

For Listener Request Month, I’m submitting my annual plea for WHM to cover these gems: Backdraft, Vertigo, and TNG’s classic episode, The Inner Light—where Picard lives a lifetime in the span of a couple of hours. Fingers crossed this is the year they make it happen!

Paul

...is Fury a bad movie? Have I been wrong all these years?
