Episode #778: Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

“I think I could get into LIGHT cannibalism…” - Steve

On the first We ❤️ Movies episode of 2025, we’re chatting about the under-seen and under-appreciated action adventure, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga! How fantastic is Chris Hemsworth’s performance here? Can we get more wild-ass action sequences like the siege on the War Rig? Can more sequel and prequel makers take a note from this film and not be afraid to change things up? And is this the best prequel? PLUS: Look out for those nipples, Dementus!

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Burke, Alyla Browne, Lachy Hulme, John Howard, Angus Sampson, Charlee Fraser, Elsa Pataky, Nathan Jones, Josh Helman, David Field, David Collins, and George Shevtsov as The History Man; directed by George Miller.

We hope you are enjoying We ❤️ Movies! Thanks so much for being the kick-ass Patreon subscriber that you are. Your support keeps the lights on around the old clubhouse and keeps us on the air. We know you have a lot of options for podcast enjoyment and we're stoked you chose to spend some time with us!

I could listen to an episode of Eric listing off Australian Taco Bell locations

Josh

That is where I looked! Have you seen it recently?

Jesse Bacon

I found in on the iPhone podcast app.

Brendan Flanagan

“I love under the truck stuff” - Best line of the episode.

Brendan Flanagan

I finally watched fury road and now I can’t find that ep in the archive?

Jesse Bacon

Nah

Hard To Gwil

Noted 🤣 I'll give it a miss and admire the name from afar

Kate Lampe

It's fun watching these as an Aussie because there's a lot of fun with Aussie references and slang, bommy knocker is from a book I read as a child and is what a giant calls his flail/mace. The little guy was someone who unfortunately went viral for being so upset after being bullied and so he got a spot in the film which was cool. Doof warrior/guitar guy is another one, a doof is kind of a rave in the bush. Sometimes they say Fang it which means something like floor it. Lots of little nuggets like these.

Tom Day

Taco bill is definitely not awesome

Tom Day

Steve needs to watch his best friends movie the mule. Angus did it first before Clint. Also has some great Hugo weaving bad guy work.

Cooper87

Useless trivia: The dude who played Immortan Joe in this movie, Lachie Hume, was on Nolan's shortlist to play the Joker in The Dark Knight.

David

And the CGI is genuinely terrible in moments, which I could forgive anyone for, except George Miller.

Jamie

I think Furiosa was a far better character when there was some mystery about her.

Jamie

I saw this once in theaters, and my only gripes were the CGI usage, and the inclusion of Crazy Carl as opposed to Mad Max. However, the CGI shouldn’t take away from the filmmakers intent, so I’m gonna give this one another shot. Preferably Shiny and Chrome if available

Jonnie Sea

omg thank you for reminding me of "I cannot BELIEEeEeEeEve you slept with the queen!"

Rose Esposito

Here's the clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x35qNXHVzvU&ab_channel=WarnerBros.Entertainment

Patrick Hayden

On Hemsworth's voice in this movie, I saw an interview where he said it was inspired in part by hearing seagulls screech at each other at the beach.

Patrick Hayden

I had an X-Men comic from the 90s where Wolverine referred to Gateway as “the old xxx”. Clearly Americans are not aware!

Craig

Tom Burke is also great in the just-the-right-amount-of-cheesy Three Musketeers show from the BBC a few years ago (on Peacock now). Peter Capaldi plays Cardinal Richelieu, if that tickles your fancy! It's good swashbuckling fun!

Molly

Also my butthole clenched hard when Eric asked what we call our Aboriginals.. rough days

Chris Donnan

As someone who lives near Cessnock, Australia, i genuinely never expected to hear its name uttered on a WHM podcast...

Chris Donnan

Taco Bill sounds awesome 🤣 I will have to look out for one next time I'm down there haha

Kate Lampe

In Melbourne we’ve had “Taco BILL” for decades. There’s still about a dozen of them across the city. I saw my first Taco Bell here about a year ago.

Craig

Great episode, guys. Now I'm wondering how this fits into your rankings for the series (if you have them, of course).

profondo robbo

Oh now I just want to see all those X-Men movies from Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Certainly would be better than Dark Phoenix.

Stewart Moncure

Jupin’s James Carvel impression made me spit up my coffee 😂

John Zurkuhlen

My favourite Dementus line: he muses "Hmmm. Questioning my bossority?" and then immediately orchestrates the violent death of everyone who questioned his bossority

REMAIN INDOORS

Played Stryker in Xmen and Slit in Fury road.

Matthew Lloyd

Re Taco Bell: I recently found out that we do have them, but I don't know how common they are.

Kate Lampe

Steve goes from “I’d commit suicide as soon as the wifi goes out” to “I could get into light cannibalism” in less than half an hour!

Craig

Never order a bommy knocker at Outback. No it's not maggots worse Vegemite.

Bible Black

It might not be Powerade sausage, but I have been introduced to Dr. Pepper Jacks Links and it is a game changer.

CharlesGrodin'sToupee

Excited for this ep. The best description I heard about this movie was someone at work told me that this and Fury Road are both great and different the way Kill Bill is. Kinda still feel gypped out of the war scene tho.

Oh! That Guy.

1964 - The Fab Four invaded the US. 2025 - The Fab Four will invade the UK.

Paul

I loved this movie! Saw it in Dolby and the sound was fucking incredible.

Brandon Shrader

I'm so excited for this episode! My son was one of the war boys in this and also did post-production work as Anya Taylor Joy's head double for some of the shaved head shots (that's the top of his head in the poster where she is looking down at the camera). It was a really great experience for him, ATJ especially was an angel and one of the most lovely people he has met so needless to say I have a fondness for this movie anyway but when I saw it I absolutely loved it 🖤

Kate Lampe

it’s Stummies the miracle drug from brain candy. read a book

Robert Clouse

The cgi is terrible and ever present. Fury road did such a better job of melding what cgi was there and the mostly practical effects.

J HEASLEY

This film was originally on my Honorable Mentions for the Best Films of 2024. However, after listening to this episode, I’ve decided to move it into the tenth spot on my Top Ten list. 👍🏻👍🏻

Paul

Thanks to the gang, I'll never not subconsciously refer to her as Almond Taylor-Joy, lmao. Regarding the stuff about going to England. I definitely wish I could go! I did make that discovery a day or two ago. Without giving it away, I'll just say that the WHM crew often leave breadcrumbs that reveal these kind of surprises if you know where to look.

Busiris

Woooo! I’m stoked for overseas fans and for you guys!!

Wesley Hall

Shoutout to Cigarette City

Trista Barker

The moment where you realize Furiosa has a type.

Mark Ibarra

Sound like anarchy.

Let's just say, Stay Tuned to Monday's programming notice on here. - Andrew

We Hate Movies

Whoa whoa whoa, Eric says “guys guys come on, we’re going to England soon… let’s just say… it was good.” Incoming uk shows???

Wesley Hall

In upcoming years, the White House's gardens will be filled with disgusting trees that grew from Trump's discarded wigs. It's life imitating art. *War Boy vomit*

Eren Keskin

Furiosa is Madame Web done CORRECTLY. The question of "Was this movie necessary?" might come up to some, and my answer to that is: Anything that George Miller can create before he dies is necessary enough. It's female-led and driven by emotion rather than spectacle, which of course will immediately shut down some people's brains, and that can't be helped. It's ultimately an A- movie, minused only because what was surprising and Holy Shit about Fury Road is reduced to "They did the thing with the thing!" here. 4th best Wasteland movie, which isn't an insult.

Mark Ibarra

Loved this movie...but I can't be the only person who saw Praetorian Jack and immediately thought: "Get me Mad Max!" "He's unavailable, sir." "Then get me his non-union, Mexican equivalent!"

Michael Daniels

Fassbinder's THE THIRD GENERATION X

Felipe Sobreiro

This movie is not good.

J HEASLEY

Josh Helman who plays Scrotus, was also in Fury Road as Slit

Andrew Berry

I saw more turn signals in this film than my average drive to work.
