Episode #776: New Year's Evil (with Stuart Wellington)

“He’s a master of disguise, okay?” - Steve on our New Year’s killer

On our final episode of 2024, we welcome Stuart Wellington of The Flophouse podcast on the show to chat about the fairly fun holiday slasher, New Year’s Evil! How great are these long-forgotten bands playing on stage? Would you watch this sleazy, locally broadcast New Year’s Eve special? How funny is this killer trying to juggle all his audio equipment in that phone booth? Could our Mr. Evil have looked around for a more believable fake mustache? Was there ever a more handsome 80s slasher than this fella? And when did this guy become an elevator expert? PLUS: Hey, Happy New Year!

New Year’s Evil stars Roz Kelly, Kip Niven, Chris Wallace, Grant Cramer, Louisas Moritz, Jed Mills, Anita Crane, and Taaffe O’Connell as Jane; directed by Emmett Alston.

I still enjoy the killer Santa Home Alone film Dial Code Santa Claus more than Christmas Evil, but this movie is also a blast!

Billie Jackson

Just listened to this episode and it was really good. For some reason though I had a flashback to the "Taken" episode and now I can stop saying "get em, Taken!".

DMAC

I misremembered this as Christmas Evil, so I watched that a few weeks ago. I thought “I wonder why they picked this slow ‘horror’ movie?” Young Peter Friedman was worth the watch, though.

Amanda P

I love that he gives that chick a hundred bucks, tells her to buy the biggest bottle of champagne they have, and than we see the clerk counting out $95 in change. She is clearly the smart one and had no intention of giving him all of that change.

John Locke

Thanks so much for sharing Cody. We're all hoping for a better 2025. Thanks for sticking with us all these years. -Steve

We Hate Movies

There's a scene where Dexter is having a nice dinner with Lithgow and his family, and then out of nowhere Lithgow gets absolutely furious and calls his wife the c-word. It's really something.

Tim O'Connor

Btw, If you only watch Dexter Season 4 with Lithgow, you are 101% fine skipping the rest.

Mark Ibarra

It was great to hear a reference to Jack Terricloth. RIP, Pete.

Seth Busino

So great, to see the Beef with Wellington finally come to a rest.

Brandon

The crossover event of the year! (so far...) Very funny show I was first introduced to WHM through the OG "Which Way You Can" Cinematic Universe pod-crossover. Both podcasts have been my favorites for many years now.

PMac10000

Loved hearing Jack Terricloth get name dropped. Always enjoy a reminder that y’all are really REALLY from NY.

J Ecochard

Whoa, Stuart of the Flophouse on WHM?? Move over, Deadpool and Wolverine, THIS is the crossover of the century!

John King

Same to all of this! I regret nothing.

John Shetler

Just wanted to share that I'm currently rewatching this in broad daylight with a cup of coffee because I *completely* greened out last night. What are my life choices.

Rose Esposito

Ra Row!!

Jamie

The tag line for this ep should have been "the sleepiest, lowest rent murder movie we've done since the baseball one." Thanks for the many years of laughs, happy new year!

Smaug

Happy new year WHM! Happy new year fellow patrons! Thank you for giving me a nice little community to be a part of.

Tim O'Connor

Super excited for this one, I first found out about WHM through The Flop House close to 7 years ago now so it’s really cool that Stuart is gonna be on the show proper! Keep up the good work, guys!

Aaron Dowler

I don't wanna point fingers but at least one of us started watching Christmas Evil (1980) and didn't notice until about 35min in....

Oh! That Guy.

Death by weed bag is exactly how I want to die. I was so jealous. That Italian pornstache of his tells me this guy is confident with his size, so he doesn't need a bigger weapon à la Jason. He doesn't need to prove a point, and he soon realizes killing is hard work during holidays.

Eren Keskin

Thanks to Twin Peaks, I always associate silly/bad disguises with Kenneth Welsh's character Windom Earle, so in my household we see some guy put on a bad wig or a cheap moustache as a "Windom Earle disguise" lmao. Anyways, Happy New Year, WHM gang! You guys helped make a pretty terrible year all the more bearable and provided plenty of bright spots. Here's to a great year in 2025. The Live show at the end of January will be a blast and Felipe's art is legit adorable.

Busiris

I'm pretty sure I wore the exact same fake mustache in a 9th grade class play. I was CACKLING, dude.

johnny stocker

I second with recommending Blood Rage.

Darryl Bowen

Watching it now and I feel like 30% of the movie is mosh pit scenes

Rod

Stuart Wellington is one of the best guests since Jon Gabrus, who also comes from an excellent movie podcast. He just fits right in with the gang. I would love to see the rest of the Flophouse members guest on WHM, just to see how long it would take before Chris Cabin tells Elliot Kalan to stop singing!

Paul

Howdy, WHM! About to listening to the episode, but wanted to say: "THANK YOU!" for everything this past year, etc. In re: to your final ON SCREEN LIVE, I was the audience member who gave Eric the reproduction ballcap from BEVERLY HILLS COP III & other gifts to you all at the after show meet-and-greet. 2024 has been a dire year for me: my fiancée lost her brother due to cancer, we are fighting an eviction, and I had a long hospital stay after a recent cancer scare. Your podcast kept me going. Thanks for all you do & all the best to you/those close in 2025. Longtime listener since 2016 & attended every live show since 2019. ✌️😎

Cody Downs

Been sitting on this Kino bluray since like February, so let's giddidon! Feliz Nuevos Anos to the Pub!
