The Nexus #100 "More Tribbles, More Troubles" / "Clues"

On our final Nexus episode of the year, we're celebrating ONE HUNDRED episodes of this show with a chat about a really dumb TOSTAS and a really great TNG!

First up on TOSTAS, it's the absolutely stupid "More Tribbles, More Troubles." Originally airing back on October 6, 1973, this episode has Klingons chasing down Cyrano Jones and his neutered Tribbles, Kirk getting his chair stolen by a Tribble, Sulu piloting a robot ship, and some of the silliest Trek music you'll ever hear!

Then, across the universe on TNG, it's the fantastic mystery episode, "Clues." First hitting the air on February 11, 1991, this episode has Picard trying to sneak a date with Guinan on the holodeck, Beverly nerdily growing some plants for an experiment, the crew doing some Klingon tai chi, Data drawing the suspicion of everyone on board with his shenanigans, and Worf getting thrown across the bridge by Troi!

The Nexus is a WHM podcast where the guys futilely go through two Star Trek series at the same time. Thank you so much for continuing to support our family of shows—we couldn't do it without you! We know you have lots of options for pods and we're super-stoked you chose to spend some time with us—thanks again!

When the Fellas made jokes about "a stock photo of Chicago on screen", it reminded me of when my Toronto City Hall appeared on a TNG eps as a far away tech colony seen through a portal. https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Toronto_City_Hall?file=Iconian_gateway_Toronto.jpg

I'm old enough to have seen this dang Tribble episode at the time. I had a theory as a kid that shows 'evolved' into cartoons. Brady Bunch was live action, then it was a cartoon. Same with Gilligan's Island, Jeanne, Tarzan, and so on.

TOSTAS never going “full Hanna-Barbera” got me thinking it’s amazing there never was a “Star Trek meets the Harlem Globetrotters” episode or something like that. On another note, congratulations on 100 episodes of my favourite WHM show! I relisten to these all the time and always laugh anew.

Steve: "I don't even mind the splash back sometimes on the asshole, it's like a fake bidet. It's like 'oh, that's fun.'" Never change, Steve, lmao. XD

I always kinda pictured the holodeck programs being like Chat GPS where you just say 'Dixon Hill adventure' and the computer generates a Noir-y 40's detective story for you.

It really is a game changer. I feel like someone could serve dinner off my ass at this point.

Paramount+ is almost impossible to navigate, but in case you can find it: there is a Short Treks episode called THE TROUBLE WITH EDWARD in which a Starfleet scientist played by H. Jon Benjamin is trying to find a way to turn the tribbles into food, it's really fun (and very short)...

And when the gang was talking about Halo novels, I couldn't help but think of the voyager ep where Tom discovered tuvok's training sim/story that halo seska takes over

Frank Grimes

also yes, Trek did a Civil War ep: Voyager's The Q and the Grey. it is wretched but there is one good joke

highly recommend The Man Who Folded Himself by David Gerrold who wrote this TOSTAS; dude travels through time, fucks other versions of himself, it's wild. And a short quick read.

You ain't lie about bidets. One of my previous jobs was doing marketing for high end plumbing fixtures and we sold toto bidets. I was able to get one of the best ones for myself at cost and I've never looked back.

Nothing like a TOSTAS to the New Year; such as it is. Yeoman's work, gentlemen. Bawitdabaw Lang Syne.
