HULKmentary

On our final commentary of the year, we’re chatting over Ang Lee’s wrongly derided 2003 comic book movie, Hulk!

On our final commentary of the year, we’re chatting over Ang Lee’s wrongly derided 2003 comic book movie, Hulk! How rad/misunderstood are all these great panel transitions? Did the response to this film hurt Eric Bana’s career? How hilarious are those amazing Hulk Dogs? Why does this movie turn into a two-man, one-act play toward the end? And has Nick Nolte ever been crazier in a movie? PLUS: Our respect for motion capture performances has come a real long way since 2003, has it not?

Hulk stars Eric Bana, Jennifer Connelly, Sam Elliott, Josh Lucas, Paul Kersey, Cara Buono, Kevin Rankin, and Nick Nolte as David Banner; directed by Ang Lee.

If you're watching along with our track (which we encourage, it's fun and you should re-evaluate Hulk for yourself!) and you have to restart for whatever reason, we start the movie at 00:00:05 into the film and the commentary starts at the 00:05:23 point on this track.

Thanks for being the kick-ass Patreon subscriber that you are! We know you have a lot of options when you're watching stuff, and we're stoked you decided to sync up with us for this movie!

Well finally able to watch this with the commentary since prime re-added film again. Unfortunately still not a fan. While parts are fun(comic transitions especially) and vibrant with colour, the acting from almost everyone is very wooden (nolte being the exception). The commentary made the watch fun looking forward to more.

I haven’t watched Paris Has Fallen but I’m pretty sure it stars French Michel and American Mike is not involved in any way

Note to self: Do not listen to Hulkmentary while doing occupational therapy exercises 😂

TDB

We dissected cats at my high school in Alabama. Do not recommend.

Jaime Lee Ezell

Based on gorillas, roided-up bodybuilders, etc...I think his dick and balls would actually be quite small and shriveled. Body's gotta siphon resources to the Hulk-bulk, brah!

Rebecca Yanovskaya

I haven’t seen this since theatres but still remember that moment so clearly.

Craig

Haha I noticed that too, yet all 4 speak in that time frame. At the very least, it doesn’t seem like any of them become silent then groggy after passing out. Some phantom snorer was in the room

RJ Cunningham

I avoided this all my life, and within 10 mins had to turn off the commentary and just straight up watched the movie because I found it pretty fucking amazing. This is better than any MCU I’ve seen by a magnitude of 10. Ang Lee made that franchise looks way worse to me than it had before. Partly because we lost great shit like this….for the most soulless, unentertaining movies imaginable. I’m with Cabin 100%. This was so well directed, and Nick Nolte played a version of Daniel Plainview that makes DDL look like a pussy. Nick Nolte, in that final monologue before biting that wire, that was great. That was legitimately the best acting performance in Marvel history. Holy shit do comic book fans not deserve good movies. This is what’s been trashed for the last 20 years? “Ang Lee, Nick Nolte and a fuck-ton of creativity? Nah!! That sucks!!” I fucking despise comic book movie fans more now than ever after seeing a legitimate movie being one of the most scorned comic book films ever. Damn. Ang Lee is unbelievable. Fucking unbelievable

RJ Cunningham

“Great, now what am I gonna do with all this calimāri?”

Noura Sarayel

You guys killed it with this one. The steady dose of grizzled Nolte-isms and the horse killer throughline provide a great comedic backbone for some of your most hilarious bits ever. So fucking brilliant. Bravo!

Destin Moulton

I dissected a cat in highschool. Way back in the year 1990... I am so old now.

Damon LeCornu

Nolte's little BLEEEAAGHHH flap at Bana right before he goes for the electrical cable is so fucking good. I wish i could keep that in a locket close to my heart

G Goldhar

Nick Nolte and Pac-man sound weirdly similar

William K. Wolfrum

Cara Buono as Dr. Faye - one of Don Draper's most egregious bag fumbles

Jack

Hell yeah! Just two days before me 37th birthday; I live off yous guys' commentaries as a means of enduring employment--currently working and watching the Friday-mentary. I'm not too familiar with the hulk universe/franchise, so this'll be an interesting experience. Love you guys, hope you're having a great holiday season with family and friends. Can't wait for the worst of 2024. As ever, don't forget to get set to wear the blue!

Zora McBride

Who's sleeping at 1:53-1:56??

Kyle Eikenberry

You know what the best thing about Hulk and other comic movies of that era? It was A MOVIE with a beginning ,middle and end. It wasn't doing the table setting for 3 sequels, 2 Avengers crossovers and 4 Disney+ series.

CharlesGrodin'sToupee

Was Marty sleeping next to you guys when you recorded this? I’ve got almost 20 minutes to go and I keep hearing snoring sounds in the background.

Nolan

This did remind of this brilliant opinion piece in The Onion questioning why there was no sequel, written by … Hulk. “Hulk movie come out last year. It success. It big popcorn movie with heart. So why no one want make Hulk 2? It make Hulk mad!” https://theonion.com/why-no-one-want-make-hulk-2-1819584105/

Craig

Currently ill and feeling like Michael McDonald in Austin Powers when he gets ran over by that cement roller, this commentary couldn't have come at a better time.

Ray

Just what I needed as a distraction this weekend, I could hug you guys

The Mad Jay Woman

Non sequitur—Hulk out ratings of the WHM Hosts: 1) Steve, for obvious reasons; 2) Andrew, usually calm on the podcasts. Would give green out a new meaning; 3) Eric, cause similar to Brian cox in McDonald’s commercials, he’d be like ba dadda I’m loving being the Hulk; 4) Chris, can’t change if you’ve angry all the time.

Jason

Josh Lucas?

Craig

DeviantArt, Hulk cologne, this is a classic episode.

FiddlersGreenDay

Saw it in the theater and this is the first rewatch. Happy to watch with you ❤️

Leesha Olivier

As a kid saw this in the theater with my dad, all I remembered was that frog exploding

Evan

I still think this movie is bad.

Mark D Myers

I've actually -never- watched this one. Until tonight, that is. I hope Hulk-Steve is not too disappointed.

Busiris

Ripped my shirt off and wore the bulkiest purple pants. let's do this!

Eren Keskin

A film with one of the funniest death scenes I can think of. Didn't see this one till years after it came out. Happy to check it out again with the commentary.

Voror

With these four sultry voices it's more like a HUNKmentary, amirite?

Mark Ibarra

Syncing up right now happy hulkidays
