MELR0210 #80 90210's "The Game is Chicken" & Melrose Place's "It's a Bad World After All"

It's the final MELR0210 of the year and we're going out with two wild eps of 1990's primetime television!

First up, on Beverly Hills, 90210, we're chatting about the After School Special episode, "The Game is Chicken." Originally airing, January 6, 1993, this episode features Steve Sanders getting into some illegal drag racing, Brandon's gambling addiction starting to beautifully blossom (couldn't happen to a nicer guy), Kelly and Brenda give Dylan an ultimatum, and Donna takes over the radio station... and does a good job! PLUS: Justice for Andrea! Sort of!

Then, cross-town on Melrose Place, it's the conclusion of the Parker Family Saga on "It's a Bad World After All." Premiering back on September 19, 1994, this episode does indeed have Alison confronting her abusive father during a backyard BBQ, along with Jake getting duped by Brittany in a wild and most hilarious twist, and Jane and her father successfully getting Sydney committed! Holy smokes! PLUS: Kimberly and Michael get all riled up by their mutual traumatic brain injuries!

MELR0210 is a WHM podcast where the guys blissfully stroll through the Beverly Hills, 90210 and Melrose Place timelines. The TV episodes covered will run in broadcast order unless otherwise specified.

Thanks so much for continuing to support the WHM Patreon! We know you have a lot of options when it comes to podcast entertainment and we're grateful you chose to spend some time with us. You're way cooler than Dylan McKay!

Ken Howard: also a late Preminger staple! Never would have recognized him.

I would have stayed.

My guess is Frank South got back from his usual summer vacation - the island where humans are hunted for sport - hung up his duster, struck a match on his snakeskin boot, lit up an unfiltered lucky strike, and said “we have a child molestation plot line? what the fuck? better pull the ripcord on that one.” He clacks out on his typewriter: “AND THE DAD GOES CRAZY AND CONFESSES AT A BARBECUE OR SOMETHING.” His day’s work complete, he rests his boots atop his desk and pensively stares out his window as the white hot California sun seeps through the venetian blinds.

We did have an auto shop at our high school, I graduated in 1990.

I absolutely know what you mean, I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to hear their take on some of the wilder parts of the show. I think it might've been Chad Michael Murray that literally tried to escape in one episode on an actual looney tunes space rocket which was hysterical. And the final episode had me ripping my hair out with how stupid/hilarious it was, oh man.

I don’t want them to /start/ a Riverdale Sideshow (they already have so many shows) but god I wish I could steal episodes from a universe where they had, because I need to hear the gang’s reactions to shit like Chad Michael Murray: Shredded Cult Leader or the Saga of the Teen Speakeasy

1) I agree with Steve and Eric in that Brenda and Kelly have no right to complain about competing over Dylan when they are deliberately doing the Betty and Veronica thing. Maybe they need a custody agreement or something. 2) I disagree with Steve re: the horny burglar bit, I FS HAVE been as cock crazy as Kathy Ireland was in this episode of Melrose Place

Now that I'm finally watching the shows in tandem with the podcast, I am realizing just how much these shows influenced that Riverdale CW show (perhaps that's so obvious now in retrospect, especially with Luke Perry involved). I did watch that show and I was screaming at the TV almost every episode because of how stupid (but so watchable) it was. Now I can do the same with 90210 and Melrose!

I love the shout out to James Karen. The dude was everywhere. He was friends with Buster Keaton for crying out loud!

"I'm a writer with a capital R!" god I love the Billy impressions

I gotta say, and I know this is more about early 90s views of mental health facilities in pop culture, but as someone that does work at a state commitment hospital, yes, we do wash the patients' clothes. We actually provide them with scrubs to wear for their first day for the express purpose of laundering the clothes they came in with.

Homer Simpson graduates!

You just know Seth Green was playing as Wolverine in the X-Men arcade game. He may fancy himself as a Wolverine, but we all know he is a Nightcrawler at best. At best!

Mmm... donut - I mean Donna

My jaw was on the floor when I saw the public molestation defense scene and I am so happy you guys did it justice. I can't imagine these shows can possibly match these heights again, but I am excited to see them try.

The ol' Crayola Oblongata.

Mark Ibarra

Stupid sexy Flanders

Katie Hopkins

"What if Donna had a Crayon in her brain?"

Seems like it's time to dust off Fury Road 90210 again: https://youtu.be/FVPvUI1houw?si=Ns2c_gnvlqdRkqoC

Tim O'Connor

The Simpsons had a loose rule that Homer could never be so stupid that he forgets his own name. Donna has failed to reach that bar in this episode, which means she is dumber than Homer Simpson.

Michael Daniels

So is the detention guy supposed to represent the blue collar element of Beverly Hills? 😂
