The Nexus #99 "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home"

On this very special edition of The Nexus, we're pulling a mulligan from last year's lost live show and talking (again) about Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home! How nice is it to dial back the seriousness a bit, especially after the previous two harrowing adventures? Why would they send the guy with the Russian accent to track down American nukes? How much did it piss off Big Bill Shatner that Nimoy got a second crack at the director's chair before he got one? And how nice is it to have a Star Trek movie feature a 7th Heaven cast member that isn't a predatory monster? PLUS: We're talking about the Muppets doing WHAT? — [EDITOR'S NOTE: We only realized after the fact that we had the release year wrong on this movie, it came out in '86, not '84, so yes, some of the comparisons we make to Back to the Future are inaccurate. Stuff happens!]

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home stars William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, Nichelle Nichols, George Takei, Walter Koenig, Jane Wyatt, Catherine Hicks, Mark Lenard, Robin Curtis, Robert Ellenstein, John Schuck, and Brock Peters as Admiral Cartwright; directed by Leonard Nimoy.

The Nexus is a WHM podcast where the guys futilely go through two Star Trek series at the same time. Thank you so much for continuing to support our family of shows—we couldn't do it without you! We know you have lots of options for pods and we're super-stoked you chose to spend some time with us—thanks again!

Brock Peters also did the voice of Darth Vader in the Star Wars Radio dramas, so yeah he did voice work

James C Harris

I swear, Nimoy made it part of the deal. He told them "I tried to leave this shit. I wanted my character to die a brave death saving the crew and ship. And you fuckers bring me right back. So I get to direct my own movie and I get to wear a fucking bath robe every day while I do it." Uh Mr. Nimoy, if we let you direct a movie, we will have to let Shatner direct one. "Sounds like a you problem. Pay me motherfuck!"

Adam Ray

Hold my beer is timeless.

Mark D Myers

"Crustacean institute" - Jupin didn't even pause - beautiful! 😂

Justin Warren

Willa wonderful life be counted as a don't mess with the pass or you will alter the future kind of movie?

Sergio Rozo

I have a feeling I'll be saying hold my beer a lot for the next four years. If it last longer than four years, it will be hold my Jack Daniels, because I'll be drinking Lemmy from Motorhead style.

Charles Keracher

everybody is rightfully holding their beers but I'm still reeling over "mupp diving"

Vicky I

Not surprisingly, I’ve heard quite a lot of Boom Shakalakas throughout the years

shaka

See you in Outer Darkness fellow denier! That place is gonna be fun as fuck

Allen M

Damn Craig! Thanks for the lore! I’ve been a fan since 2010, and vaguely remember the early TGOW references, but couldn’t remember the inception of the bones/grunge/nu metal joke. Gonna go back and listen to that!

Allen M

BTW I’m pretty sure Mad also made a joke about the Klingon Bird of Prey smelling like crap!

Craig

I believe this originated in the Animation Damnation episode they did on the animated series - episode 5. I think it also contains the first reference to “a tall glass of water”!

Craig

Please tell me at least one of the four of you remember texting HopStop for subway directions. Please.

Matthew Seelig

Okay...hear me out. If they re do this, episode 1, and twister...can we recover Blues Bro 2000 and National Treasure....I'm only so much a super fan, there is one or two more

Elliott Tipton

And Bill Simmons did Over The Top on The Rewatchables a couple of weeks ago.

Tom

The fucking Muppet totalled me. I’m crying my eyes out laughing at that “cunnilingus” Fozzie. Brilliant!

Tom

I appreciate it every time, but I have to say: Bones considering 90’s alt rock to be classical music and venerating it is the funniest Trek bit I’ve ever heard. Makes me giggle

Allen M

Captain James T. Cuck? Is that anything?

Tim O'Connor

Cut scene from The Enemy Within where Kirk cucks himself.

Samuel McGuire

Everyone in 1985 definitely thinks Dr Jillian killed herself. Her life’s work was destroyed, two whales slaughtered in front of her, they just find her truck in a park..

Joe Parrino

Ex mormon...the planet thing is true. There's three levels of heaven (like a pyramid scheme) and I believe only those at the top are the ones who have God like powers and in charge on their own planet. So if you've ever nor let someone merge into your lane then you're going to the middle level.

Darryl Bowen

The purple suit...is my childhood

Elliott Tipton

Saw this in the theater when it came out. One of the few times Trek did humor really well.

Ed Harris

Gunna try and save this for the drive tomorrow XD

Evan

All Your Base Are Belong to V’ger

Kevin Lynch

The New Bedford Whaling Museum here in MA has extremely graphic displays and movies of whaling

Kevin Lynch

Still happy

Mark Ibarra

My mum also taped this off the tv and I loved it so much as a child that I wore the tape out

Alex Fry

"Still haven't seen Avatar 2" Same Steve there are dozens of us!

Tala Hobballah

Someone: That “Star Trek IV” live show was incredible—and it cannot be repeated. WHM: Hold our beers.

Paul

No, but there is a creepy MAGA guy who runs a Bill Simmons subreddit podcast and if this bit finds his way to him he'll definitely hound Steve to get him on his podcast to talk about it

I.C. Weiner

Goddamn, that's amazing! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

Holy crap, I gotta get this! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

Thx

Mark Ibarra

Then a helpful stranger comes along and shoots them both dead, ending this horrible meme-off before it can go any farther

Aaron Dowler

When the punk guy woke up he was like "CASH ME OUTSIDE."

Mark Ibarra

If Spock nerve-pinched that punk who was blaring his music and I was there to see it, you’d better believe I’d say “Like a boss!”

Aaron Dowler

Oh, THIS IS FINE.

Mark Ibarra

Man, people using outdated meme phrases? That’s an EPIC FAIL!

Aaron Dowler

I once got nerd shamed by my brother and neighbor kids for splitting off from the group to watch this instead of OVER THE TOP. I stand by my decision.

Mark Ibarra

Nephew Kyle is catching strays from Andrew on this pod

I.C. Weiner

I'd give my first born to have it appear on Shat's In Memoriam. One can dream,

Gino Volpe

As someone who only started watching Star Trek movies in adulthood and doesn't have any particular feelings towards them, I really quite enjoyed this one! Scotty trying to use the 1980s computer was hysterical.

Busiris

I would give anything to see footage of that little lump of hair floating along the water and some sad PA has to go and fetch it before they can set up another take.

Busiris

As an occasional Bill Simmons listener I'm so curious lol

JK

I can't defend the Guy Pearce Time Machine but I like it for some reason. Also, I played bass for Guy Pearce and the Time Machines for a few years.

Michael Daniels

Brock Peters was great as Ben Sisko's dad in DS9.

Tony King

Eric jokes about a true crime podcast about Gillian disappearing, that’s literally in this book. https://www.amazon.com/Lost-Eternity-Star-Trek-Original-ebook/dp/B0CL5GY5W9?dplnkId=4e65ba64-d42f-409b-93ee-3c3a8463f2fc&nodl=1

Drew Stewart

Does anyone know who the “hold my beer” guy actually was? 😎

Darren Orloff

This was my 1st exposure to Trek, as my mom calls it, Star Track: The One with the Whales. I'm glad we can finally hear your take on it with this re-record. Much appreciated!

CharlesGrodin'sToupee

Brock Peters voiced Darth Vader in the Star Wars radio drama

Randy Record

Bless you for dropping this episode on the day I (and probably many other listeners) have a long cross-state drive to make!

Isaac Coleman

now i'm sad we didn't get a shopping/makeover montage

Convincing John

Just awesome artwork by Felipe.

Steve Lyon

Yes!

Paul

So funny story regarding Shatner's wig. My father's old roommate became a vfx engineer for ILM, with Journey home being one of his first credits. He can corroborate that there's a copious amount of pre/post roll where that wig is floating away on the waves. Wild stuff.

Gino Volpe

I remember when this came out in theatres. I had the Mad Magazine parody issue but didn’t actually see the film until years later.

Craig

Oh I’m excited for this one. We were at the live show and I’ve been hoping y’all recorded it so I could listen again, but this is good too.
