Episode #770: The Wizard of Oz (W❤️M)

“Mank was right, the twister looks good!” - Andrew on the special effects

On this week’s episode, We ❤️ Movies month concludes with an absolutely wild conversation on the beloved 1939 classic, The Wizard of Oz! How beautiful is all the craft to behold on-screen as this movie unfolds? Where’s the story where the town revolts against that disgusting Miss Gulch? Wait, how many times did that dog actor portray a dog named Toto? How great is all the vaudeville physical comedy these actors utilize? And in a film filled with terror, how horrifying are those talking trees? PLUS: Did the CIA put the poison in Oz’s poppy fields?

The Wizard of Oz stars Judy Garland, Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, Jack Haley, Billie Burke, Margaret Hamilton, Charley Grapevine, Clara Blandick, and Terry as Toto; directed by Victor Fleming.

super belated but i'm going to use up my remaining patreon access to share this: re horrifying imagery in Oz, this is from the original Baum books, via Wikipedia: "In The Tin Woodman of Oz, Nick Chopper finally sets out to find his lost love, Nimmie Amee, but discovers that she has already married Chopfyt, a man constructed partly out of his own dismembered and discarded limbs." Also, Wicked was good, I recommend it!

Convincing John

Right!?

Brandon

This one will definitely be a repeat. Some of my other faves, Puss In Boots, Ewoks: The Battle for Endor, and Rudolph the Rednosed Reindeer. Funny AF!

Nena Aguilar

This episode was hilarious. Just wanted to say the lion did have a song like the other two, it was “if I only had da noive”, but I like the only had some balls rendition.

Paul Jansen

Yyyyyup. Also, Arthur.

Mark Ibarra

My god! I just had a flashback to my childhood when my older cousin would babysit my siblings and I while my parents were on trips and we’d all watch Under The Rainbow and Grease 2 because they were in heavy rotation on HBO

HockeenightsCT

Toward the end, Steve’s impression of the Cowardly Lion totally lapses into the Charlie in the Box from Rudolph, and I loved it!

Melissa Benjamin

Love when Jupe dusts off his pipes.

FiddlersGreenDay

I’m a defender of the first Wonderful Wizard of Oz book, I think it’s delightful. Easier to read than Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. It got a really amazingly drawn graphic novel adaptation too. P.S Margaret Hamilton rules in this movie.

Trevor Herron

Richard Harrow mention!! 💖 My fave fictional character of all time. I love that scene, when he said he was the Tin Woodsman to amuse Margaret's kids. I already have my ticket for a Q&A screening of Day of the Fight, Jack Huston's directorial debut starring Michael Pitt. A reunion!! And Chris saying Wicked would mean that people can now be wrong about the story -- I am POSITIVE Chris has found himself in "AND WHAT WAS HER SISTER?! A PRINCESS!!" arguments before. Probably at Thanksgiving. Including tomorrow.

Rose Esposito

And that's only part one!!! The first movie is longer than the entire stage show 💀

Rose Esposito

The show is great. I have not seen the movie yet--but it only half of the show. That's annoying to me.

Leesha Olivier

Those wheelers! 😱

Leesha Olivier

Adding to the farmhands/companions In Cold Blood fun, in the books, the Woodsman gets the name Nick Chopper, which is a drifter killer name of if I ever heard one.

James Gibson

Cabin’s “Hunk of shit” name comment made me do a spit take.

Craig

Yeah I picked up on that too!

Craig

It’s like the killers from Kiss the Girls, they’re on both coasts!! Another favorite Cabin quote!

Jaime Lee Ezell

I’ve been a loyal subscriber for years and I’ve never laughed so hard as I did this episode. You guys are just gold. Outstanding.

Ann Dye

That's a fair compromise I think.

Blankzy

"old people love to try to get dogs put down."---New Eastwood movie just dropped!

Jason

"Now, Dorothy, what do I always say?" "Gee, Auntie Em... Um... It's not a war crime the first time?"

James Bergquist

Would definitely place it at #2, while the rest are in a tie for “no, I’m not ranking these”

RJ Cunningham

"What are you doing step munchkin?"

James Bergquist

I laughed a lot during the conversation. But never harder than when Chris piped up with 'Mike bleeeeeeep was the name of that counselor.'

Paul DeCoursey-Clark

Steve mentioned that the characters have their gifts all a long but it is funny that the scarecrow miss quotes the pythagorean theorem: it does not apply in general to isosceles triangles.

Ryan Contreras

This was a fun episode. I think I'll watch it tonight since it made me realize it's probably been 20 years for me. It's just one of those examples of a timeless classic. Also I had no idea the Professor played other characters besides the Wizard! I do think Return to Oz would be a fun episode for you guys to check out. It fits well as one of those films you see as a kid that scares the hell out of you. As for Wicked. Saw the show in high school and thought it was alright. It does fall into that trap of feeling the need to explain all these little details about the original film though I do think the second half (which won't be until thr Part 2 movie because of course it's two parts) is interesting in a BTTF Part 2 kind of way.

Voror

Return to Oz is a cool, creepy movie... Maybe the best Wizard of Oz-related movie after this one.

Felipe Sobreiro

I think dogs should be allowed to bite disgusting shit boys! - Eric

We Hate Movies

I hope that's how it happened! This was 30 years ago, so at least I know shes not around to pick on small animals anymore.

Blankzy

We are a Return to Oz family, my ten year old son loves it like I do!

Jaime Lee Ezell

This movie is so timeless that my 5 year old was absolutely enraptured with it the entire time when we took him to see it in theaters a couple of months back. He liked it so much it convinced me to take him to see Wicked yesterday. He enjoyed it quite a bit, as did I, my wife did not

I.C. Weiner

I hope some Gremlins launched that old bat.

Mark Ibarra

Thank you, sir! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

Woo-hoo! We hope you enjoy! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

I've got tickets. I just had absolutely zero interest in the Broadway show (as did my wife), so I guess we'll see! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

Oh, WOOF! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

Well then, fuck those people! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

When I was 8, this old rich lady in the neighborhood tried to pry my friend's little dog from his arms to "take it to jail (?) and put it down". This was all because the dog barked at her two disgusting sh*t boys. He was screaming and crying, until his mom finally got home and told the old hag to "get the f*ck away from my kid and off my property". Nowadays, I see this all the time working with foster dogs. Old people love to try to get dogs put down. Especially if they're not pure bred fancy dogs. All this to say, Eric, I know you're just joking, but this happens all the time and it's heartbreaking and sucks. Because in real life, if old rich white people want dogs to be put down, the dogs get put down. Otherwise, love the ep as always!

Blankzy

"Follow the yellow brick road = hit the bricks b****!" Outstanding.

Elliott Tipton

Love when you do old movies! Can't wait for the Seven Brides for Seven Brothers episode, that's going to be interesting to say the least 😅

Charlotte Pocklington

Never realized Tin Man was a Boston Brahmin until this viewing

RJ Cunningham

For a large portion of my life, I thought Wizard of Oz was an overstuffed 3-hour drag that I could only manage in small bites. Then I realized I was associating it with the CBS airings of my youth, which were network events, loaded to the gills with commercials. And now you *must* do Under the Rainbow. Woof.

Mark Ibarra

WIcked is only 18 minutes shorter than Fellowship of the Ring and I almost fell off my god damn chair when I read that

Matt

Fun fact about the dog who played Toto: She died September 1st, 1945. World War 2 officially ended September 2nd, 1945. What did Toto know, and was she part of the Imperial Japanese government?

Michael Daniels

Second scariest movie I've ever seen in my life. No. 1? Return to Oz. (Shudder)

Brandon

20:00 mark you just gave those disney horror guys like 3 more movies lol

Gary isabelle

Controversial choice, saying you love this movie! 😉

Tim O'Connor

Fugazi reference at 1:14:30?

profondo robbo

I recently showed this to my five-year-old daughter for the first time and thought at the time it would make a great WLM. In fact I was going to enter it for Listener Request Month, so was stoked to see it on the upcoming list. It also means I can revert to my perennial WLM request: Tombstone!

Craig

Hearing a discussion that leads into singing about defecating in and around the Land of Oz is precisely why I listen to this podcast.

Busiris

“Wash my vagina.”

Supposing they brought

Much like the guys I thought Wicked looked terrible but I saw it and LOVED it. Do yourself a favour and check it out.

Scmods

Final thought: The shudder series "Cursed Films" Talks about Wizard of Oz in detail. The Wicked Witch almost burned to death, tin man and asbestos plutonium makeup. Shit was crazy

Dan Craftwerk

I am on painkillers right now, two herniated disc's. I cannot stop laughing.

Dan Craftwerk

In cold blood reference, I'm dying of laughter.

Dan Craftwerk

Wishbone, I remember that dogs weiner always on display on a giant poster in my 5th grade classroom.

Dan Craftwerk

Big agree!

Chelsea Rebecca

Holy shit I'm so excited to listen to this

Chelsea Rebecca

Man Andrew and Steve both have a GREAT Bert Lahr

Scmods

Now realizing Doug’s Christmas special is a tasteful homage to Wizard of Oz. Toto = Porkchop…wrongfully accused

Graham Trainor

Worth every god damn penny

Eric McNamee

"We're Costco guys, of course we drink pickle juice and are scared of flying monkeys!'

CharlesGrodin'sToupee

One of my favorite Danny Trejo movies.

Paul

Been a while since I've seen Return to Oz but I remember the wall of heads screaming at Dorthy freaking me out

Darryl Bowen

Seriously tho, objectively speaking...this is the greatest movie ever made. It's going to turn 100 years old in my lifetime, and it will still be completely mesmerizing to me, and to anyone of any age. Truly timeless.
