Episode #768: U.S. Marshals
Added 2024-11-14 11:00:04 +0000 UTC
“It’s almost too much of a conspiracy for a sequel to The Fugitive to handle.” - Andrew, on the conspiracy plot
On this very special patrons-only episode of We Hate Movies, we’re chatting about the soggy, unnecessary continuation of The Fugitive, which is a flawless movie, it’s the very flawed sequel, U.S. Marshals! Why couldn’t Wesley be allowed to do some martial arts in these fight scenes? Why is it just another hunt for a wrongfully accused fella? Is this film one of the first ever instances of Starbucks on-screen? How fantastic is TLJ in this chicken suit? And for a movie called U.S. Marshals, why is the marshal team an after thought in this one? PLUS: A special round of the VHS Trailer Game!
U.S. Marshals stars Tommy Lee Jones, Wesley Snipes, Joe Pantoliano, Daniel Roebuck, Tom Wood, LaTanya Richardson Jackson, Iréne Jacob, Kate Nelligan, Patrick Malahide, Rick Snyder, Paul Michael Chan, and Robert Downey Jr. as Royce; directed by Stuart Baird.

You know I saw this movie first so I liked it. I don’t think I’ve ever seen The Fugitive.

I like The Fugitive more, but I really do like this one, too.

Yeah, me too. It's a pretty straightforward procedural and all the better for it. I don't understand the WHM love for The Fugitive. It's fine but that's all. I can never remember the ending, all that Provasic nonsense. And nominated for 8 Oscars!!?? No. I'm a US Marshals guy all the way 👍

I apologize if I'm leaving this comment on the wrong episode but you recently mentioned the Glenn Close movie "The Deliverance" and I hope it's in consideration for the Worst of 2024 movies.

Did Katt Williams look like that already in 1998 or you think he saw Wesley Snipes in disguise in that one scene and thought “Saaay”

This is a true story related to something in the pod. I am schizophrenic and while I was still hallucinating and before hospitalization and diagnosis, I tried to cut my penis off. I failed, I don't know why. I'll stop there. Yeah, it's a fucked up story.

1. as someone currently living in Taiwan the past two weeks hage made thinking about the future... depressing. And 2. Having a parent who worked at the UN building... I don't remember security being that heavy pre-9/11. Only went once after that and it was full airport security checks with everything.

I have to admit, this film is a guilty pleasure of mine. I used to watch it a lot when I was younger and I saw it again recently and it was still a lot of dumb fun.
It is a terrible sequel? Yes, but peak Snipes and TLJ being a cranky arsehole gains this a few points. RDJ being the obvious villain from the outset does let this down. This was the first film I saw him in and, at the time, I genuinely thought he wasn't worth any of the hype. I know his career was pretty much in the shitter at this point, but I never understand the point of taking a job you hate.

I would personally vouch for it being a WLM. It's okay to like a JCVD movie.

Nobody else is going to stand up for Patriot Games? Fine. I found myself watching it a couple of weeks ago: a perfectly serviceable Dadfernoon featuring a cast WAY too good for the material. Ford, Jones, Ann Archer, Sean Bean, Samuel L Jackson, Richard Harris and even a young Thora Birch doing some good kid acting. The politics suck but hey, that’s Tom Clancy.

It was interesting listening to you guys talk about Stuart Baird's filmography. I had just rewatched Executive Decision this week and so the name pinged in my head. I will say that movie is a ton of fun, but NOT well directed. Also, you are correct. His best by a country mile.

To be fair, RDJ had an Oscar nom for Chaplin under his belt at this point (and I think I really wish he won?? Hard to say). And we're *barely* hiding that he's the bad guy here -- every five seconds the camera's cutting to him going 👀 whenever the conspiracy is discussed. Have a little respect for us, Baird!
It seems I'll never watch a Joey Pants performance the same way again, btw. I'll never not be thinking "DARLA, BE QUIET. Gold, silver and bronze. You guys did it. 😊"
EDIT: I didn't even recognize Tracy Letts! I was too busy laughing at his perfect use of "do hwhut??", a Southern phrase I've only just learned about.

Tell my wife I said “Ditka”!
As a native of the great city of Chicago, your impressions are perfect. Except none of us go to the Bean.
Also if Joey Pants was part of a Voltron he’d not be the shoe. He’s be the pants!

I think I'll now probably forever refer to The Fugitive as "The Fuh-gitive" lmao.
Also, hearing Bloodsport be a stay tuned is a huge delight. That would make for a fun episode and a great excuse for me to revisit that gem. :D

I love everything the boys said about this movie, it's true you can't compare Harrison Fords Fugitive performance to anything in this but because this movie falls into the "movies watched with my Dad" category, I have a soft spot for it. Especially since he doesn't seem to like any new movie released lately 🤣

The guy who played the Dad of one of the bullies in “Boy Meets World” was not Ogre…but late WWF wrestler Vader (or Big Van Vader in WCW). More astonishingly, he plays himself (but as a different real name) so the Ethan Suplee bully’s dad is VADER!
You guys got your big beefy 90’s henchmen confused! LOL https://youtu.be/HFa4MEWBQ9s?si=IUvmn-GPhYzuPL7A

The General is a pretty great movie. He was a real crime boss in Dublin and actually very 'Penguin' like. He had to have been in Farrells thoughts when playing that role. Gleeson is of course amazing in it but Voight is really good as a scumbag cop too.
There's another film loosely based on the same gangster called 'Ordinary Decent Criminal' with Kevin Spacey playing the role and it is dog shit.

Holy shit. I've been actively avoiding the apocalyptic news and listening to only we hate movies. I randomly picked the blade runner episode today and the first answer for the vhs trailer game was us marshalls. Crazy!

This movie came out either the same day or the week after The Big Lebowski! (Let that sit for a while) by that point, I was still seeing movies with my folks and my little brother and when it came time to vote what to see, my Lebowski vote was tanked by the manly dad movie pull to this one… with that said, having seen Lebowski, my parents would have HATED IT. It’s just weird how almost 30 years on, I can’t think of Lebowski without thinking of US Marshalls and vice versa…

Tommy Lee Jones in a chicken suit feels like an attempt to one-up The French Connection opening with Gene Hackman dressed as Santa Claus.

One of those Peak Blockbuster Video movies whose box I can picture perfectly. And yet I've never seen this (or the similarly hampered Speed 2,) and I'm debating whether I should bother. I am eagerly awaiting the recommendations at the end of this episode and will be taking them at face value.

I also didn't know this was a Fugitive sequel originally.
Also I keep getting the Fugitive and What Lies beneath confused. Like the latter is his home life.
