Episode #764: Land of the Dead

For this week’s FOUR-OR MOVIE Spooktacular selection, we’re talking about the last good one from a true horror master, George A. Romero’s Land of the Dead! Shouldn’t they have dirtied up Simon Baker’s handsome-as-hell appearance for this gritty-ish character? Who else wanted, nay, needed, more Dennis Hopper in this movie? How cool is that Priest Zombie head-snap move? Couldn’t they have shown us Big Daddy walking underwater like it’s a Pirates of the Caribbean movie? And anyone else catch the Tom Savini cameo? PLUS: George A. Romero and M. Night Shyamalan battle over Pennsylvania Film Director Supremacy!

Land of the Dead stars Simon Baker, Dennis Hopper, John Leguizamo, Asia Argento, Robert Joy, Joanne Bland, Tony Nappo, Phil Fondacaro, and Eugene Clark as Big Daddy; directed by George A. Romero.

RODNEY The Hairiest Ewok?! Cmon!

Rod

Uuuuuuhhhghhgggoooooaaoshh

Nathan Lemire

The guys said that he's a troubled detective going after the guy who killed his wife and I'm like... so they just made Monk again without Tony Shalhoub?

Tim O'Connor

Ah, the M.Night vs. George Romero verbal turf war was a comic highlight of my day.

Robert Christian McKinney

Maybe like Breaking Bad season six, they just figured they’d go one more round and brought in a new antagonist out of nowhere.

Craig

I have to break the news, The Mentalist Season 6 episode 8 is called "Red John". Which means I'm curious, what the hell is the 7th season about?

Ray

Pull yourself up by your blowjobs.

J HEASLEY

I got a Teams call halfway through listening to this, came back and its now a Mentalist podcast. Sometimes you gotta just roll with the punches Also that NotLD remake with Sid Haig was actually the first movie completely shot in, edited in, and released straight into the Walmart $5 DVD Bin

Matt

"Which Gotham cop did you play?" "Eckhart, sir." "Oh... my... God..."

Tim O'Connor

Willem Dafoe, Eric Roberts, and Keith David? I don't care what this movie is about, I'm buying a ticket.

Tim O'Connor

The blowjob economy has to be a WHM staple now. Thankful for student blowjob forgiveness 🙏

Chris Tobias

I have seen it a handful of times. Do they have some non-PGH stuff in there? I looked on the ol' IMDB and it only lists a couple places in Washington County and Pittsburgh.

Busiris

This all brings back some good memories. I remember the smell of the exhaust from the Catwoman bike chase scene when I was out there one afternoon during filming. And I definitely have photos of the snowy streets in July too. Over a decade later and I'm still bummed I never got called to be an extra on any of the local scenes.

Busiris

The Mentalist, being a procedural released on a network after 1995, is a show my dad watched (TV for dads), so I can confirm that Red Jack is found in season 6 and the show limps on after the main plot is wrapped for a season and a half, to a point even my dad didn't care anymore. But I will also add, he is played by Xander Berkeley, so that's a plus.

Matthew Lazorwitz

"SORRY I DIDN'T GO TO THE BEACH THAT MAKES YOU OLD, YOU FUCK!" Is Shyamalan/Romero the new Lucas/Spielberg fictional rivalry? Because I love it.

Rose Esposito

Did you fucking say Fiddler's Green?

FiddlersGreenDay

I don’t know if you’ve seen the Savini remake of Night of the Living Dead, but for not being shot here like the original, its very faithful in its references to the area, which I’m sure is helped by Savini also being a Pittsburgh guy.

Rob Brown

Wells Fargo may actually be a blowjob bank.

Mark Ibarra

When I worked on Dark Knight Rises, it was July or August (I still have my wardrobe sheet with the date on it somewhere), but it was supposed to be fall, so we’re dressed warmly, but not like the sorry bastards from later on when it’s supposed to be winter. I’m one of the cops that’s going into a subway tunnel right before the entrance gets blown up, and then we’re the same bunch of cops that’s IN the tunnel when it blows up. I also got to drive one of the cop cars, but I’m at the back of the pack and wasn’t anywhere close to being seen. Because of my regular job, I missed out on getting to be JGL’s stand-in in the bridge scenes, which I got called about. A couple years later, when Captain America: The Winter Soldier did a bunch of filming Cleveland, I got to be a SHIELD agent in that, so my fictional comic book universe law enforcement resume is pretty, pretty cool.

Rob Brown

Give me a peek behind the curtain. When you say “aural” during a recording, does everyone immediately look at Eric?

Samuel McGuire

I was downtown one day after they filmed some of the scenes where there was snow. If I recall someone said they used instant potatoes for the flakes. It was pretty cool though to see parts of the city and going "hey I know where that is!". I do remember they used to do those Zombie Walks/Fests. I think one year they had someone from the Guinness World Records there, maybe it wasn't real though.

DMAC

Excellent decision staying clear of the second one.

johnny stocker

I always say I used to get so much done before I had kids. Listening to this podcast I’m reminded that one of those things I “got done” was watching all 7 seasons of the mentalist…😳

William Durham

Small thing but a huge part of why I love WHM. Way back when I watched Land of the Dead with my buddies on DVD! (With a few tall glasses of water.) We MST3K'd over it a little and generally enjoyed the movie. During the scene where Big Daddy finds the tied up Zombies, my buddy shouts "My people" in a zombie-like dramatic voice. I don't know why but it just got me the way certain jokes do and I laughed until I was coughing and the tears came out. Obviously I recall it to this day fondly. Having listened to the episode, I am sure you know that Steve made the EXACT same joke and I laughed just as hard. But maybe with a few more tears since my bud is not around anymore to share the joke. I don't think it's anything profound exactly. You guys just make the good days better and the hard days easier sometimes just by making us laugh. This joke was a particularly good one.

Lono's Oboe

Holy smokes this episode is hilarious. Top tier moments.

Shawn

Shaun of the Dead is 20 years old?! I'm crumbling to dust over here.

Tim O'Connor

I saw Survival of the Dead at a festival screening in Seattle. I remember hating it and at the end everyone standing and applauding as if Romero was there. I just stormed out and probably angry mumbled on my way out. I stopped watching Walking Dead after the fake out death of Glenn before before Negan showed up.

Darryl Bowen

"All I'm saying is that Ewok better cum quick", had to pull over

Zerox

Somehow this movie is more than the sum of its parts for me. Enjoy it more than Halloween 4. But I heard it’s okay to like a movie!

jribs

I thought the first one was fun, but I never went in for "Double Tap" - Andrew

We Hate Movies

I came very close to expiring laughing at the blowjob bank bit

Albert C

Going through Asia Argento’s wiki and WOW they weren’t kidding, I need a drink…

nadia

I could be a blow job banker, Mark!!!! Actually, movie idea, The Banker starring Willem Dafoe and Eric Roberts. ER is a down on his luck guy until he meets WD who says "you know, I'm something of a banker myself heh-heh-HEH". Featuring Keith David as the CEO, "I know it's pretty baby, but you're 90 days past due".

DMAC

I always appreciated the many, many potshots Psych made at the Mentalist's expense.

CharlesGrodin'sToupee

I feel so goddamn vindicated when cabin likes a movie I like. Diary of the dead is great. It's a great bad movie. They should do it as an episode, honestly.

Jonathan Lyons

It’s comforting to hear this podcast mature from Owen Lars fucking a shaved Ewok to the gang requesting a hairier Ewok to blow

Kevin Lynch

I know like 7 people watched Kroll Show but I’d love a Pawnsylvania reboot with M. Night running the Philly pawn shop and Romero running the Pittsburgh pawn shop. “I got them slacks worn by JCVD in that movie Sudden Death.” “Double yoy! That’s a Pittsburgh classic!”

jribs

The 2 zombies that are chained up for tourist photos in Fiddlers Green are actually Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright!

Mr. Bad News

100%

Leesha Olivier

And featuring Dennis Hopper as "Beorge W. Gush"

Michael Daniels

"Uhhhhhhhĥhhhhh..."

Mark Ibarra

I saw this in theaters and I have exactly two memories of it. A zombie with a machine gun, and Hopper saying 'Zombies creep me out, man.'

johnny stocker

Psych > The Mentalist!

Jaime Lee Ezell

Good point on how Leguizamo could've/should've played the lead. It was definitely weird to revisit this and realise that it's the first of Romero's Dead movies to have the white guy be the main hero of the piece. I have to assume it was a producer's note or something. On the topic of modern zombie movies, what are your thoughts on Zombieland?

profondo robbo

I don't know if I just missed it, but in case you didn't mention it, the two zombies people are getting their picture taken with are Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright.

Tony King

Rob beat me to the punch further up this comment section but yes I think it's a bummer that it's supposed to be Pittsburgh but is 99% Canada. I moved to Pittsburgh about a year after this movie came out and I lived there for over a decade and grew to love seeing on-location filming in areas that were familiar to me. The Dark Knight Rises and that first Jack Reacher are some of the bigger examples. They name drop a couple parts of town in Land of the Dead but it's that's about as "yinzer" as it gets, lmao.

Busiris

" Catch 'em in bed with a blowjob goblin!"

CharlesGrodin'sToupee

New WHM show: We Hate Mentalist

Paul

Guys, twilight of the dead. Patterson magic!

Alexander Trattner

It’s ironic that you think that Pittsburgh looks like Gotham City in this, because some of The Dark Knight Rises was shot in Pittsburgh (I got to play a Gotham cop for a couple days!), while Land of the Dead actually wasn’t. This is the first one that Romero shot up in Canada, probably for budgetary reasons. I had a friend that grew up around here that was a kid when Day of the Dead came out that always wanted to be a zombie in a Romero movie and was pissed that they didn’t shoot Land here, now that he was in his zombie prime.
