The Nexus #96 "Yesteryear" / "Data's Day"

It's time once again to travel into that magic space ribbon known as The Nexus!

First up on TOSTAS, it's the time traveling, Spock-centric episode, "Yesteryear." Originally airing September 15, 1973, this is the episode where Spock travels back in time (through the same TOS time vortex seen in "The City on the Edge of Forever") to save himself from being killed as a young boy! How funny is it when Kirk says he's going to contact the ship's costume department? How cool is it they got Mark Lenard back to voice Sarek? How horrendous is all this child voice acting? And how quickly does Andrew bring up the A.C. Crispin novel, "Sarek"?

Then, across the galaxy on TNG, it's the incredibly silly episode, "Data's Day." First hitting the airwaves back on January 5, 1991, this episode has Data interfering in Chief O'Brien's wedding to Keiko Ishikawa, a possibly crooked Vulcan giving Data attitude, Beverly trying to do an autopsy on a pile of goop, Data obnoxiously narrating the whole episode as a log entry to a scientist friend, and our first look at the bridge going in and out of "Night Mode"!

The Nexus is a WHM podcast where the guys futilely go through two Star Trek series at the same time. Thank you so much for continuing to support our family of shows—we couldn't do it without you! We know you have lots of options for pods and we're super-stoked you chose to spend some time with us—thanks again!

Easily one of the most forgettable movies I've seen in my life. - Andrew

Hell yes. I’ve never heard of this before.

Don’t worry. Trek never used the Guardian of Forever again until Harlan Ellison died because he threatened to sue anyone who tried

I can imagine Beverly getting hammered on Romulan Ale and performing the Elaine Benes "Little Kicks", resulting in her embarrassment.

"How much O'Brian is on this ship anyway?" "Miles O'Brian!"

If raising chickens has taught me anything, Chicken Man would happily ask for seconds upon finding out he was eating chicken stew :/ Anyways, great episode all around, so glad we're getting more time with the OG crew.

Easy winner for “Yesteryear” for me, but I have to say that Chris’ coffee line made me laugh so hard it woke my wife up from a nap.

James R.

I must have missed the “stay tuned” when you brought up the Michael Flately movie…

Andrew Dean

Anybody else pronounce TOSTAS like Bob Costas?

Chris Rose

Did you say "Take My Wife Please?" Please say you did. If you don't get the reference that's on me, I'll be here yelling at a cloud.

Picking Data to give away the bride is a good pick because it is one of those moves where if you pick a regular degular crewmember like, those two have done the math and it is gonna piss SOMEBODY off and that is a lot of hassle so you pick the only robot working in starfleet and it makes total sense and all the wierdos who would have gotten mad will be OK with it. Its like if, idk, Tom Jones shows up to your wedding by accident and you want a good anecdote to tell people at parties for the rest of your life. Related I gave my ex-wife away at her subsequent wedding, it ruled.

First, get ready for chicken man aliens to come back in a big fuckin way in a banger of an ep, second Yesteryear was the ep that sold me on TOSTAS because it is such a fanfic in the best way exploration of a side comment about vulcan pets in a two line drop in the Sarek ep and we get to see Vulcans operate on normal TV bully rules where one is a skinny kid and one is a tall kid and one is a fat kid and the kid at the end is like hey i gotta go to school and Sarek is why and he is I GOTTA LOTTA VULCAN ASSWHIPPINS TO PASS ROUND and it rules so hard

Data's Day is such a fun ep, I always love the slice of life TNG episodes

Adam Sorensen

Coincidentally the voice actor for young Spock made his first convention appearance this year and talked about how they gave him zero direction.

The animated series would work so so much better as a series of radio dramas. Barring the shit boy, the acting is aces all around.
