Episode #754: Gamer (Live in Atlanta)

“Cue the Bloodhound Gang!” - Chris, on this film’s soundtrack

Recorded Live at City Winery in Atlanta, GA 4.25.24

For the first summer break episode of 2024, the guys were in Atlanta talking about the Gerard Butler video game action adventure, Gamer! Why couldn’t they edit these action scenes a little more clearly so you can follow this stuff? How lame is it to set your film “a certain time from now”? Did we really need to hear that Marilyn Manson “Sweet Dreams” cover again? Is Michael C. Hall’s character one of the worst villains in action cinema? And do these poor bastard avatar people get any days off from killing adventures? PLUS: Did Gerard Butler sign on to the film because he thought he was being asked to play Cable, the X-Men character?

Gamer stars Gerard Butler, Michael C. Hall, Amber Valletta, Kyra Sedgwick, Logan Herman, Ludacris, Aaron Yoo, Johnny Whitworth, John de Lancie, Milo Ventimiglia, Zoë Bell, John Leguizamo, Terry Crews, and Keith David as Agent Keith; directed by Neveldine & Taylor.

Comments

This comment now makes a lot more sense, lmao. Hey it is what it is! Listening now and it's still a really funny one, echoes or no echoes.

Busiris

I sadly had to work when y’all were in Atlanta so I couldn’t come to this, so glad to finally hear it!

Joel Myers

I'm so glad I was able to join you all and hear about waffle guy live! Whenever I'm at the farmer's market at the rail yards in Albuquerque, I always think, "this is where they filmed Gamer, pour one out for Kable."

Smaug

1982 was a time.

Mark Ibarra

Oh, for sure! However playing Call of Duty online was the only time I've been called the F, N and R words all in the span of 20 minutes. - Andrew

We Hate Movies

Thanks, Busiris! Hopefully you're still feeling that way when From Dusk Till Dawn comes out! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

Exit Through the Gift Shop - great movie! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

True Story: As the song started, backstage several of the guys had no idea what the song was and I was gobsmacked! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

Professional e-sport players get ready for gaming by getting yelled "I fuck you, sonuvabitch" by 10-year-old Russians for months. This is a fact.

Eren Keskin

Little known fact: the DP on this film was actually Lakitu.

Excitemike 64

Probably said, but drill bit and neveldine admit to be being high as fuck this whole time....see hdtgm

Elliott Tipton

There were a lot of jokes going through my head about Milo V's character, but I've decided it's probably better to just not. There are a lot of things in this world to be joked about, I'm just gonna select a different one.

johnny stocker

I love this comparison 😆

Rose Esposito

Man, it wasn't Call of Duty that put the lives at risk at massive scale (I know there was the swatting craziness), but the absolute, staring into the dark void of humanity that is IRL Streamers. Some total scumbag with a camera and Livestream where the "pranks" are, at best, harassment or, at worst, just committing felonies.

Jason

This is probably my usual annual observation that these live recordings are getting better in quality every year. I listened to part of the episode connected to my car and it sounded almost completely indistinguishable to a normal in-studio episode. Really love the dedication to high quality audio, gang!

Busiris

It's super telling that no real game ever says yes to one of these "woaaah maaan you die in the game you die in real life" ass movies for a branding deal lol

Alex Murica

I’ve been waiting years for y’all to do this. I’ve been meaning to call it in for the request month forever (and of course the year I finally do y’all did it for a live show oops)

Lar

ACH!!! Seriously, warn a guy when you're going to bust out Pac Man Fever. The embarrassing wash of nerdy fat kid memories made me cringe so hard I thought I was going to fold into myself like the house from Poltergeist.

Mark Ibarra

Finally! I have been waiting to hear this since the live show was announced.

Bryce Zubriski

This is the first movie the gang has done in a while that I have truly, viscerally hated. Only Keith David’s seemingly out-of-nowhere appearance broke me out of my disgust at this turd.

James R.

My favorite part was when Steve burped into the mic. Classic Steve!

Rod

Ack, I could do an accent, Mark!

If you have ever seen the fantastic pseudo-documentary about graffiti artist Banksy "Exit Through The Gift Shop"....one of THE funniest sequences occurs about 2/3 through when Banksy finally gets to watch the filmed collective work from Thierry Guetta, a quirky French Canadian aspiring artist who had been embedded with him for several months taking videos of Banksy and others creating street art all over. 🫢 The result ended up being a ninety minute documentary cobbled together and edited from throusands of hours of raw footage. And as we see this video begin, we realize that's it's nothing more than a continuous stream of roughly 5 to 10 second cuts of various unrelated filmed instances spliced with snippets of pop culture....with no narration, no titles, no text, and just an occasional white noise soundtrack playing overhead. As Banksy filmed in shadow drolly observes to the audience: "It just seemed to go on and on....it was an hour and half of unwatchable...NIGHT-MARE trailers...." Well that pretty much describes watching THIS dead-tech, postmoderninistic try-hard dystopian actioner starring Gerard Butler, Ludacris, Percy Jackson, Dexter, Kyra Sedgwick, and Allegra Cole from Hitch. 🙄 It has a few moments including an admirable ATTEMPT at an exciting car chase about half-way through but it's mostly just noise! No I haven't seen either of the Crank movies so maybe I just can't appreciate the artistry of Neveldine and Taylor. I'll say this though....Mr. Brainwash would have appreciated it.
