Episode #752: Arachnophobia (with Paul Scheer)

“How do you not kill the guy on the toilet?” - Eric

On the season 14 finale of We Hate Movies, the gang welcomes actor/comedian/podcaster/author/movie-lover and all-around good guy, Paul Scheer to the show to chat about the sleepy, yet kinda crazy monster movie, Arachnophobia! Why isn’t this movie just about John Goodman’s exterminator character? Why couldn’t the major spider at the end be a huge, dumb puppet monster? How funny is it that this movie doesn’t care about those kid characters at all? Why couldn’t we see that dumb sheriff eat shit on-screen? Why would you uproot your whole family without being absolutely certain you have that job, Jeff Daniels? And you better believe we’re marveling at all the Seinfeld alums in this! PLUS: Just watch Shatner in Kingdom of the Spiders instead of this.

Arachnophobia stars Jeff Daniels, Harley Jane Kozak, Julian Sands, Stuart Pankin, Brian McNamara, Mark L. Taylor, Henry Jones, Peter Jason, James Handy, Roy Brocksmith, Kathy Kinney, Mary Carver, Frances Bay, and John Goodman as Delbert McClintok; directed by Frank Marshall.

Episode #752: Arachnophobia (with Paul Scheer)

Comments

Brett Goldstein's Films to be Buried With would be fun!

Julie Chase Buell

It’s wild that they assembled Daniels/Sands/Goodman to be what should have been the funnier version of the Schieder/Dreyfuss/Shaw team from Jaws and then did nothing with it.

HockeenightsCT

That John Carpenter tee shirt joke was too accurate

Boots Century

Damn, now I gotta rewatch Twisters to catch Paul in it. Love him on Veep

Smaug

It was a great show!

Smaug

Loved Paul’s polite laugh throughout “Aaaaah”

Rod

Oh, man, that would've been something! Can't believe you didn't gain any powers, that's B.S.! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

Oh, at least Warlock one is a must! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

It and NoES had me terrifies of drains.

Meghan McGehee

"Would you recommend it?" "If I didn't watch it, yes." 😂 I don't think we've ever heard that take on this show! Also appreciated the shout-out to June with Paul deeming the football players balls scene as "so upsetting."

Rose Esposito

Team Sanity.

Rose Esposito

Psyched for this crossover episode!

NickM

My brain is short-circuiting hearing voices from two of the three movies podcasts I listen to all mixed in together.

G. T. Blackwell

Swear to god, I've thought about this everytime I've used a lamp with a pull chain switch.

Erin Hardy

Andrew, your pitch about a movie character getting spider powers like Blade is near and dear to my heart. To put it shortly, when my mother was pregnant with me, she was bitten by a brown recluse (she recovered). This was in the mid-80’s when she was working as an X-ray tech. I am sad to report that whatever radiation she worked around was not enough to grant me spider powers of any description.

Nolan

Patton Oswalt would crush the Celebrity VHS Trailer Game.

Tim O'Connor

Obsessed with Stephen referring to floors/levels as 'flights of house'.

Rhea

My mom legit got mad when she found out this was a going to be a episode. "Arachnophobia is a good movie. "

Mark D Myers

Love Paul guesting! One of the greats!

Jamie

The more I heard of this discussion and the issues with story and tone, the more I realized that the 1988 killer cockroach movie The Nest kind of did this one better. Granted, it looks much cheaper, but in a way, that is a better fit for something like this. And you talk about being underwhelmed by the finale in Arachnophobia, the ending to The Nest is fucking BONKERS.

Todd B

Now we're talking! Send it in! weallhatemovies@gmail.com - Andrew

We Hate Movies

Better movie! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

Oh yeah, we'll get around to that one day. Maybe season 15? - Andrew

We Hate Movies

I like the idea that gets put forth here of the entry-level horror movie. My first "horror" movie was Final Destination 2, which is a pretty mild horror movie, and I couldn't believe how entertained I was. I love that stupid movie for teaching me that sp00ky is good, actually.

Tim O'Connor

This was a fun episode but my favourite part was actually the announcement of the Gamer episode being released next week. I love the Gerard Butler episodes and have been dying waiting for this one. I literally screamed in excitement. So glad I was working from home today instead of looking like a lunatic in the office.

Bryce Zubriski

Great episode. I would love to hear them do episodes on the first two Warlock films with Julian Sands.

DMAC

Looked up a synop - yeah, I'll have to read it, sounds far out. Wouldn't watch a movie about it tho!

Dominic Kovell

Oh, and now that I've actually listened to the episode, nice of you to bring up the cow from Kingdom of the Spiders; cinema's greatest cow actor. Seriously, amazing cow.

Mark Ibarra

Love the idea of a movie podcast festival. Who do we all want to see there?

Shamus R McClelland

This movie freaked me out as a kid and I had a false memory of the final spider being the size of a Volkswagen Beetle.

jribs

audible shriek over here

Matt

Frank Marshall does the same thing he does to Congo; the same thing he does to Alive. He's a producer who didn't need to direct. It's not even a workmanlike movie. It's a series of barely connected Point A to Point B sequences. The only charm is from the effects and John Goodman. Joe Dante or Sam Raimi would have KILLLLLLLLED this material.

Mark Ibarra

Fun (?) fact: the real spiders used in the film were Australian huntsmen, which can be found pretty much everywhere including in city apartments! I recently caught one for my neighbour and took it outside at her request . It was so big that when I dropped it on the dirt it landed with an audible thud.

Craig

The Philip K Dick short story “Expendable” was made for you. It’s available on the web in various places.

Craig

Over the top bombastic monster movies are a dime a dozen. I appreciate how relatively grounded this movie is by comparison.

Justine Prudhomme

15 minutes in and this is already an instant classic episode. I love it! It’s like somehow Paul Scheer is bringing the show back to its roots.

Derek Baxter

THE SHOWER SPIDER I saw this trailer ONCE on a VHS tape in 1990. I am now thirty nine years old and STILL think about this at least once a week in the shower. Scariest movie ever made to me personally.

Matt

I'm afraid of just about everything that creeps and crawls - weta are my worst nightmare - but for some inexplicable reason, I don't have a fear of spiders. I find them to be cute, weird, or fascinating. I think it's because spiders tend to eat insects, which are infinitely more disturbing to me, so they're heroes in my mind. That and we have a Spiderman superhero and not a... Silverfish Man. *shudders*

Dominic Kovell

If you mention a “Spider King” in the first act, it better show up wearing a tiny gold crown in the last act.

Excitemike 64

“Middle America loves to hear about your bespoke wine” 😂

Jaime Lee Ezell

I fucking hated this movie as a yute and I fucking hate it now 🤣 Not because its a bad movie, but as many others have said it gave me a terrible fear of spiders. This episode will be very cathartic.

Christopher Bruce

I have a story about this one that might be mailbag-worthy. And yes, it involves a kid freaking out over it.

Craig

A movie I saw only bits and pieces of as a kid but I've seen that (pretty great) poster a thousand times. This is a great cap to a great season - seeing you guys collab with Paul is a big, pleasant surprise. Hope you guys enjoy the summer break!

Busiris

Oh man, I'm not even a dedicated HDTGM listener but even I know the Drop Dead Fred episode is an all-timer.

Busiris

Same, i also like the subtle Drop Dead Fred reference. That is one of my favorite HDTGM shows.

Dan Craftwerk

I saw this when I was 7, I remember having a fat kid vacation eating a bowl of just cool whip, cereal box scene, i just imagine spiders were in my cool whip. I threw up.

Dan Craftwerk

I am so thrilled to have this crossover of my two favorite podcasts!!! Love! ❤️ This movie has lived in my nightmares since it came out lol ETA I think this is my new favorite episode!!!

Jaime Lee Ezell

Sorry but I have to strongly disagree with you guys on this one....it's a slow-burn creature feature with humor and tension and several well-drawn characters. Jeff Daniels is fantastic in this - he's playing a particular scaredy-cat type and he does a endearing job of it.

Geoff Gershon

I remember all the ads for Arachnophobia selling it as a John Goodman vehicle. The fact that he is barely in the movie constitutes the worst case of false advertisement since The Neverending Story.

CharlesGrodin'sToupee

Saw this when I was a little kid in '92 and I still check the shower curtain bar for spiders to this day

Robert Calvillo

+1 vote for an episode about The Relic

Robert Calvillo

I've only seen the ending of this film and it freaked me out as a kid. Also this is another time Chris has mentioned The Relic and I find myself hoping that one ends up on the feed sometime soon in the future.

Voror

Saw this at the drive in when I was 10 and since then have had a crippling fear of spiders like Jeff Daniels.
