Episode #751: X-Men (with Jamelle Bouie)

“They always have to act like they’ve been through a civil rights march for nudity” - Chris on creepy movie guys

On this week’s episode, the Summer Blockbuster Extravaganza goes to Comic Book Town as we welcome back our good bud, New York Times columnist, Jamelle Bouie to chat about a real landmark motion picture, 2000’s X-Men! How fantastic is it that the movie creates this entire world of mutants and what the state of things are and still runs under two hours? Has there been a better cast pairing than Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen? Why did they need to include that wretched Toad? Is Xavier charging these students for all that school merch? What’s up with the X-Men refusing to install railings in the Cerebro chamber? And how great can these movies be when the creators have respect for the intelligence of the audience? PLUS: Eric Szyszka? Turned into a mutant thanks to Magneto’s Magic Mutant Machine!

X-Men stars Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, Famke Janssen, James Marsden, Halle Berry, Anna Paquin, Tyler Mane, Ray Park, Rebecca Romijn, and Bruce Davison as Senator Kelly; directed by noted sack of crap, Bryan Singer.

Episode #751: X-Men (with Jamelle Bouie)

Comments

James Marsden getting done dirty in that Last Stand I think it was mainly due to him jumping ship with Bryan Singer to go shoot Superman Returns . So he got done doubly dirty..if that's a thing.

Swan Benson

Wasn't Spiderman in the fantastic 4? He being the avengers is not stretch.

J HEASLEY

Came here to say that Jamelle instantly filled the void of Eric's absence by talking about the cum cloud right out of the gate.

Joe Gunch

The problem with the Whedon line was the delivery was terrible. And entire movie of that dialogue is one hundred percent just buffy the vampire slayer and it absolutely would have worked with actual sass put into it like it obviously was meant to be said.

Greg Vann

Re: Patrick Stewart's pre-TNG career in British television, the BBC Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy series is a treasure. Personally I prefer it slightly to the film but I'll take either. It doesn't stop there, though! Stewart also reprises the role of Karla in the follow-up series Smiley's People (not as good imo), and also appears in the BBC series adaptation of I, Claudius (well worth checking out). But my favourite early role of his might be in the 1974 BBC historical drama series Fall of Eagles where plays one VLADIMIR LENIN. It rules.

Cody

I really bumped up with when Storm told Megneto Sen Kelly was dead and he says "are you sure you saw what you thought you saw?" A clumsy line but I kept thinking 'ooo Kelly's coming back as a full on mutant' No, Magneto just can't believe his idea has failed.

Darryl Bowen

“People underestimate how important the Spanish Civil War was to the global left in the 30s!” - me

Aaron Dowler

"That guy! Klaus Fuchs! He's the spy!"—me

Adam Lewis

Jamelle is always a delight! I hope there's a universe out there where there's a WHM x Serious Eats cereal review crossover.

Vicky I

I did not think that Jamelle would be the one to fill Eric's quota of dick & cum jokes. Well done!

Kemper

Oh wow, weird. I've actually been there! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

Julian Sands ringing the dinner bell! Gawd rest his soul.

Tom

Honestly I was insanely surprised and delighted to hear that next week we are getting Arachnophobia a childhood favorite of mine that tragically to it’s detriment does not have enough John Goodman in it

Jason Banks

Okay themed month idea. Hear me out. I've been watching a bunch of the Airport movies, all would make BANGER episodes. What about Disastember? A month of disaster movies. Could do an Airport or two, a Poseidon Adventure, a Towering Inferno, there's SO many options.

Surely there is a higher-than-average occurrence of Elbow Men ™️ among WHM fans. I mean...right?

Rose Esposito

X2 power hour pleeeease

Rose Esposito

I must be a crazy person who is crazy because I always preferred X1 over X2. Sure, X2 might be a technically better film, but I place X1 over X2 the same way I do with Batman Begins over The Dark Knight.

CharlesGrodin'sToupee

Yes please.

Nathan Lemire

Would anyone else be totally fine with the guys just going through and making episodes or commentaries on all of the X-Men movies? Because I would.

Robert K.

Finally some Elbow Guy representation in current media! Best podcast ever.

Nathan Lemire

Kill, the Indian movie.

Rose Esposito

lol the room with the X's in the beginning is a music hall, Roy Thompson Hall. To your earlier point about the lack of budget... this was filmed in Toronto lol

I'd Rather Have No Name

The opening chat with Eric and Charles is Roy Thompson Hall, Toronto

Elliott Tipton

I don't know what Stan Lee's first cameo ever was BUT I watched that old TRIAL OF THE INCREDIBLE HULK and he's there, in the courtroom

Felipe Sobreiro

I don’t know why but Steve’s day to day life is endlessly entertaining to me.

jribs

Is this a W❤️M episode?

Joey T

Amazing episode guys, X-Men is a classic and excellent movie, watching Magneto turn the guns on the cops and stop the one bullet from sending that guy to hell was wild to see! Also jellyfish senator melting was burned in my 12 yr old brain 😳

Watch_N_Rewatch

You've seen Rambo on human growth hormone, now see him on mutant growth hormone.

Matthew Lloyd

The other remnant from the Whedon script is when Cyclops says "how do we know its really Logan?" And Logan goes "you're a dick" and everyone is satisfied.

Matthew Lloyd

I saw this opening night. I’d never been more excited for a movie and probably haven’t since. Didn’t disappoint. Side note: My “friends” left me, the group’s elbow guy, inside holding seats for the four of them, nearly getting into a fight in the process, while they were busy finishing MY joint in the parking lot.

Milan

I literally always associate Liev Schreiber with the character he played in Goon, and as such, in my head he's always a Little Hockey Shithead. Too much yapping for Sabertooth. >.<

Kate

Just because I've heard it a few times, JK Simmons has said he didn't do that for the JL role.

Meagan King

I saw this at the mall multiplex with my idiot friends opening weekend. We were 15. We absolutely would have listened to some Limp Bizkit and Korn on the way, eaten Taco Bell at the food court, and then scoped out the comic shop in the mall after. 80% chance one of us had JNCOs and 10000% wallet chains were present. We had no idea that was the peak of society. Edit: I was infact the elbow guy

Matt

It’s always a treat when Jamelle comes on the show. Can’t wait to listen!

Matthew Taylor

The Trump endorsement was encouraging.

Mark Ibarra

Felt very seen when they mentioned “History elbow men” that was me when I saw Oppenheimer with my brother last year

Aaron Dowler

I could run a school for mutants, Mark!

DMAC

"I'm spending a lot of money here and you're wearing JNCOs?!"

Matthew Mariner

I've always thought Ian McKellan intentionally played Magneto as gay. No where is this more evident than in X2 where he and Mystique are catty bitches giggling about Rogue's hair.

Michael Daniels

Also, "The Death of the Elbow Man" could be an Oscar-winning documentary about the post-9/11 commercialization of Hollywood

Tim O'Connor

What's the train fight movie that Andrew and Chris are talking about at just after 35 minutes in?

Tim O'Connor

It was almost as shocking as Eric's subsequent manifesto supporting Louis C.K.!

Dominic Kovell

“ehh ya fuckin bout time John Rambo joined up with the Mutant Brotherhood man” - big fan of the Stallone impression always in a groovy and gregarious mood Also gotta admit I’m a rube who blindly believed the Mujahideen-Rambo thing for years

RJ Cunningham

Wow I just listened to the deep rising episode that Jamelle was on

Steve

Holy hell, I was listening to Limp Bizkit last night for the first time in years. Small world!!

Vōclō

My first experience with the X-men movie was at the drive in theater it was before what lies beneath

Arthur martinez

Wow I can’t believe the 45 minute segment where the guys articulate why they, personally, endorse every action Brian Singer has taken and how this episode is proof that they all, personally and professionally, support him in all of his endeavours.
