The Nexus #95 "Beyond the Farthest Star" / "The Loss"

This month on The Nexus, we start a brand-new chapter of our Star Trek re-cap show. That's right, beginning on this episode we start our coverage of Star Trek: The Animated Series!

First up on TOSTAS, it's the maiden voyage of the animated Enterprise on "Beyond the Farthest Star." Originally airing September 8, 1973, the first cartoon outing of our favorite space crew has our heroes being pulled toward a mysterious, eons-old starship, an eerie entity trying to get aboard the ship, Kirk hilariously shoving a mustachioed transporter chief, Scotty getting CRUSHED by a huge, heavy hatch, and Kirk getting electrocuted in the back!

Then over in the three-dimensional realm on TNG, it's the dreadful Troi-centric episode, "The Loss." Originally airing December 29, 1990, this episode continues the show's streak of doing bad by the character and actor when attempting to form episodes around everyone's favorite ship's counselor. It also features Worf yelling about ghosts, Troi poorly counseling a widow, Riker trying to get it wet, and the always-welcomed return of Whoopi Goldberg as Guinan!

The Nexus is a WHM podcast where the guys futilely go through two Star Trek series at the same time. Thank you so much for continuing to support our family of shows—we couldn't do it without you! We know you have lots of options for podz and we're super-stoked you chose to spend some time with us—thanks again!

Comments

The alien group suicide was the only time I've seen that in a sci-fi series aside from one of the main alien species in the Stargate tv show having all its members commit mass suicide since they were all deteriorating in intelligence due to being clones (copy of a copy problem). Uncharacteristically grim stuff.

“ I talk about dirty stuff all the time, but really I’m quite chaste.”

Samuel McGuire

“The Weird Guy” is infinitely better then Koenig!

Kahless

The Super Mario 3/Game Genie metaphor hit hard lol

Jen Parsons

Another super nerd checking in. If you want more about why Koening didn't come back, a couple of years back the History Channel did a pretty nice Trek history doc series. Narrated by Gates McFadden, with lots of good interviews. A full hour episode devoted to each series, including TAS and it's Star Trek: Phase 2 roots. Thr Center Seat: 55 Years of Star Trek. Available digitally or, yes I got it on dvd...sigh. Very worth the time. Big recommend.

Jeffrey LeMeowski

I mean, it's been a long road...

The latest run of step-jokes has not gone unnoticed

Chris Tobias

I hadn't previously watched the Animated Series, so I'm into the new direction of the show! I watched this on DailyMotion and thought "why does everyone sound like they're sucking on Helium the whole time they're doing their voicework in this show?" Bad audio transfer over there

Smaug

Oh yeah - in Khan he definitely has a crisp English accent so it might not be one of the Irish dead meats that litter TOS.

Jesse Whiting

Lt. Kyle is on TOS in a few eps as one of the potato eating square headed crew members who show up in 2-3 eps

Winson Paine

So this might be a coincidence but there's a Commander Kyle serving on the Reliant with Tiny Die Hard and Captain Terrell in The Wrath of Khan. I just assumed they were the same character as in TOSTAS.

Jesse Whiting

Mega nerd checking in - Arex is an Edosian (they come back in lower decks like so many of the weirdo gleepglops on TOSTAS) and Doug Jones is not one because he lacks the FREAKSHOW THIRD ARM COMING OUT OF HIS CHEST which still horrifies me

Winson Paine

I’m stuck in the Mutara Nebula. Help me step-Enterprise!

Kevin Lynch

The aliens pulled a Cobainashi meru.

Shamus R McClelland

Very amused that Bad Dragon references have become a frequent occurrence on these here shows.

Rose Esposito

The back half of TNG is lousy with spotlight episodes and ethical polyamory

Andrew Dean

If anyone here gets unstuck, I'm fuckin out.

Jakob Stinson

It's shocking how many characters Jimmy Doohan voices for TOSTAS.

The Wheel

Ferengi porn would have the women fully clothed, as revealed in DS9. Ferengi culture is very misogynistic and forces their women to stay at home nude at all times. Wearing clothes for women is considered lewd. I wish I was making that up.

Michael Daniels

jesus christ it's the worst -- and even Voyager had a solid banger orchestral theme song.

Matthew Mariner

"Can we talk about that wretched theme song... again?!" - 80 year-old Andrew

We Hate Movies

The whole notion of doing things they could only pull off in animation and not live action is one of the biggest reasons I have such a fun time watching these animated eps! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

you guys want clits, you gotta look at Gowron's forehead

Convincing John

HAL's voice horrifyingly grinding to a halt as he sings that goofy theme song

Tim O'Connor

I don't know why but HAL 9000 singing "Daisy" popped into my head.

Mark Ibarra

"The world isn't ready for an animated Scotsman, Jim."

Eren Keskin

Between TOSTAS and TOFTS, the show has really upped its acronym game

Tim O'Connor

I cannot wait, 37 years from now, when we're all on Mega Patreon and what's left of the WHM squad is quietly riffing on episodes of Enterprise.

Matthew Mariner

I’m watching TAS for the first time since this was announced (having already seen every ep of TOS, TNG, DS9 and Voyager) and I’m shocked at how good it is! Cheap animation and a bit rushed but the stories are great and the cartoon lets them do things they never could on TOS. Looking forward to the ride!

Craig

I choked on my spit laughing at the Doug jones/ toasty conversation 😭😂😂😂

Here we goooooo
