Episode #750: Alien: Resurrection

“This is the goopiest movie of all time!” - Steve

On this episode, the Summer Blockbuster Extravaganza heads to space as we chat about the better-than-Andrew-remembered sci-fi sequel, Alien: Resurrection! How fantastic is Sigourney in this one? Shouldn’t Brad Dourif’s evil scientist have tried to train just one Xenomorph at a time instead of a Baker’s Dozen from the jump? Shouldn’t we have seen the initial pirate heist of these hyper-sleep people? Why couldn’t Christie have just shaken that dead alien off his boot? How great is that basketball shot? And how fabulous are all these gloopy, soupy, alien puppets?! PLUS: The guys come up with another great sci-fi horror pitch for the new film, Werewolf Astronaut!

Alien: Resurrection stars Sigourney Weaver, Winona Ryder, Dominique Pinon, Ron Perlman, Gary Dourdan, Michael Wincott, Kim Flowers, J.E. Freeman, Brad Dourif, Raymond Cruz, Leland Orser, and Dan Hedaya as General Perez; directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet.

Episode #750: Alien: Resurrection

Comments

Your idea about werewolves on the moon is actually very similar to Full Moon Fever, a film that got lost in development hell but was going to be directed by none other than… Renny Harlin https://www.ign.com/articles/2004/12/07/harlin-has-full-moon-fever

Andrew Craig

well you dislike me, i hate prometheus and alien covenant

Thomas Fitchette

Totally forgot Tuco was in this! And I have the Alien Anthology blu ray set, put on the theatrical version: no English subtitles!! Annoying! Great episode!!

Jaime Lee Ezell

File Alien 3 under "we didn't know how good we had it"

Christopher Schuber

I feel like the point is more that it's a very *different* kind of movie, tonally, than what we expect from an Alien movie, regardless of the actual quality of either of them. I agree that Whedon is better suited for "American geek" stuff (which was perfectly put, lmao) than something like Alien, which is probably also why Avengers is the more successful movie.

Emily B

As a former C-section baby, everything Eric says is 100% accurate

Vicky I

an appearance from Cabin's good friend Cam Ripley

Matt

I love those! How many different languages had subtitles at the bottom?

Smaug

Putting Covenant in front of Alien 3...I dunno about that one. Listening to Fassbender jerk off over his Philosophy 201 textbook for 2 hours...ugh. I find his character insufferable, he sounds like a 2nd year college student who just discovered humanism and can't wait to condescend to everyone about it. Maybe the film school equivalent is some kid discovering Kubrick and going around pretending like they're now the paragon of film knowledge and everyone wants to throw fruit at this person. That's David. I enjoyed the Assembly Cut when I watched it during quarantine, can't help that CGI, but it makes the story a lot better

Smaug

Team: “We thought you were dead…” Call: “Welcome to the Rock!”

Graham Trainor

Can I just also point out the “Paul Walker is fine” style prescience of this episode with Steve talking about how disturbed he is by ear trauma?

Craig

Also originally hated Alien3. 12 year old me in the theater was Furious what happened to Newt. Few years later I did a 180 on it.

Darryl Bowen

Recently rewatched all the Alien movies and first time I didn't dislike Resurrection. There's a horror podcast that recently talked about the history of all the alien movies. Ever since Aliens Weaver wanted to have sex with and birth an xenomorph which Cameron turned down. Not sure/don't recall if she had direct responsibility on her baby in this or something that waa a coincidence.

Darryl Bowen

Are we sure they haven't? Lotta records in that discography! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

The Hulu transfer may be bad, but the first (and only) time I saw this was on a pirated VHS copy a friend bought in Asia. A classic “handy cam in the theatre” job. You could even see people standing up in front of the screen during the credits!

Craig

Came here to also point this out! Surprised Steve wasn’t all over it.

Craig

I'm with Cabin on this one, I like Resurrection well enough but it is definitely the weakest of the Xeno-saga. If anything, the movie only works because of Jean-Pierre Jeunet's direction and the cast.

CharlesGrodin'sToupee

This was the first Alien movie I saw at the theater and I’m a sucker for Whedon dialog and I love the cast so I’m happy to hear Andrew came around on it. Also we still use modems today. Modems just convert signals. Your WiFi router has one built in

Dan sulin

Avengers is way better movie than alien resurrection.

Mark D Myers

Munch, munch, munch , munch munch! Loved this episode guys, the actors almost dying facts were crazy, Whedon hate is great and all around Alien appreciation rules! Fun fact , rented this from Blockbuster watched this with my Dad when it was first released and he couldn't believe all the fucks in the dialogue, I couldn't believe how horny Brad Dourif was for the Aliens.

Watch_N_Rewatch

first and only Aliens i ever watched, in theaters and what I remember is: giant bb alien getting sucked out; brad dourif wall jiz web; dan hideya's shoulder hair.

Convincing John

I do a good impression of the alien's screaming during that scene. Doesn't go over very well at parties, but maybe I can share it on the next listener request call-in.

Joe Gunch

A little bit in between. They talk about how tough he is to work for. They recall the infamous "Abyss" story where he's so rough he makes Mary Elizabeth walk off the set (she comes back a week later to finish the movie). But they also offer praise that he just knows what he wants.

Michael Colon

Can't wait to listen to the episode. I'd say the movie's a terrible entry in the Alien franchise, but a very fun watch regardless. The goopy grossness, the canted angles, the... 'French-ness' of it all. Not to mention all of the great sets and practical effect work.

Joe Gunch

Reason 624 I'm going to Hell is because I got the I'm stuck jokes.

Charles Keracher

When you say roasting Cameron, are we talking affectionate ribbing or 'Fuck that guy'?

Todd B

You should check out the special edition box set. The BTS featurettes are really good. The actors get really candid about the movies in the interviews. They really roast the f out of Cameron. And of course you get the interesting trivia (it makes its rounds on Facebook in memes) where Weaver made that trick shot in one shot. I don't even think they were planning on her making it at all. But she sinks that thing in one and they kept it in.

Michael Colon

This is one of my classic "convinced all my friends we should see this movie" experience. Leaving the theatre you could feel their looks of "you fucked this up and we hold you accountable".

Jason

Hit it with the Spice Weasel!

Mark Ibarra

"Goooooooood... GoOoOoOoOoOd...." - Andrew Palpatine

We Hate Movies

Thanks, Julien! It was a good episode to do in-studio and we had really did have a ball talking about this one. - Andrew

We Hate Movies

Homicide is no good! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

I'm knee-deep in a full franchise re-watch as well! I'm not going in order, so far it's been 4-3-Prometheus, but I hope to get all re-watched before Romulus comes out! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

Oh man, my old man can cook a mean Xenomorph! You have to velvet the meat in baking soda to neutralize the acid and use thin slices, as one might use for stir-fry. This way, dang Xeno meat won't lose moisture when cooking as well. Bon Appétit!

Eren Keskin

I really wish there was as 4K box set, but they've only put 1, 2, Prometheus and Covenant on 4K so far. It's a bummer because I'd rather just buy a box set! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

Our idea is he turns into a werewolf IN space. Totally different. lol. - Andrew

We Hate Movies

Hell yeah. - Andrew

We Hate Movies

I'm so glad someone got the reference! - Andrew

We Hate Movies

How have Guided by Voices never released an album called Werewolf Astronaut?

Liam Carroll

There is no Ellen, only ZOOL!!

Nathan Lemire

Ahhhh the number 8 (burp) references brought a big laugh out loud moment for me 🤣😊

Christopher Bruce

You guys are talking me into liking it!

Matt

Fork... Fork... ... ... Fuck.

DMAC

Sensational episode. The boys are enjoying each other’s company so much! Warms my durned space cold heart.

Julien Schwab

Perhaps it IS okay to like a movie.

Mark Ibarra

I think this is the first time in a decade of listening you’ve generally liked something homicidally hate.

Tom Prentice

When I saw they were doing this movie it finally gave me the excuse to watch the whole franchise (again)

Dan H

This was my first alien movie also. They showed it a lot on starz

Arthur martinez

The look of fear and confusion during the suck out always makes me tear up 😥

Jamie

Just started but mentioning Brad Dourif and “no matter what” in the same sentence without doing a Charles Lee Ray impression is amazing self restraint because I for one can’t say that phrase without shaking my fist angrily.

Lar

I think Andrew must be right about that transfer quality on Hulu. I've only ever watched it on there and even tonight my biggest reaction is just how ugly the movie looks. I think it's my least favorite of the franchise but maybe I'd warm up to it if I saw a nice 4k restoration somewhere.

Busiris

Jean-Pierre Jeunet has perhaps the best iMDB profile picture of any director. A deer in the headlights stare to end all (he also looks like a French Jim Norton)

Z

Always nice to sit down with a new episode just as I get off from a long work day

Dylan

Dudes. DUDES. Astronaut Werewolf is a Marvel comic. Look up Stargod. Jonah Jameson's son goes into space, and comes back a werewolf.

The Wheel

Just watched the alien suck-out scene on YouTube to prep myself

Josh

Stoked for this one!
